This one was just absolutely bizarre. I have never seen anything like this. The guy gets aroused and turns into a monster. Is this like a metaphor for something?

I’ve been watching Amazing Nurse Nanako and one thing that absolutely kills me is the late 1999 computer animation in the credits.

There’s something so wonderfully specific about this era of CG. The stiff little character models, the shiny plastic-looking surfaces, the extremely basic lighting, the awkward movement... That floating T-Rex made me burst out laughing! It instantly takes me back to those late-90s/early-2000s PC game cutscenes and anime DVD menus. At the time I’m sure this was supposed to look futuristic, but now it has become its own kind of retro aesthetic.

And Nanako itself is completely bonkers so far. I went into it expecting a pretty straightforward late 90s ecchi comedy. Ridiculously exaggerated fanservice, a dumb but lovable heroine, mad scientist jokes, etc. And, well... it definitely is all of those things.

But there seems to be something stranger going on underneath it?

I’m not sure yet whether it’s actually trying to say something or if it’s just throwing every late-90s anime idea into a blender, but it already feels like more than a typical ecchi show? There’s a really strange, almost subversive streak running through it.

And then the credits hit you with THIS glorious 1999 CG.

Absolutely perfect.
