General Discussion Why didn't Morty ever tell Beth that --

Rick didn't abandon her as a child? But was rather a version of him that had them taken away from him? I feel like the revelation itself was largely glossed over by Morty as well. You'd think it would've been a bigger deal to him.

Theory The S9 finale ending is actually happy, here's why: Spoiler

I've seen a few people say that the ending to season 9 is dark and troubling. There's this idea that Morty calling Rick his dad at the end is a symptom of Morty's isolation, a desperate attempt at finding security in his life where no one cares about him, keeping him endlessly tied to Rick. Under this interpretation Morty is a victim of Rick, and this ending symbolises a kind of Stockholm syndrome where he's latching on to a sociopathic person who just uses him.

I would disagree with this interpretation, further, I'd say it's completely in the wrong direction. The ending to S9 is a happy one, and here's why...

Rick says he's Morty's dad before he does, Morty simply affirms it. This shows that Rick does feel paternally protective of Morty, even if he needs to be shitfaced to tell him. The whole episode he is running from his alternate family, none of whom actually care for him. When he sees them all die horrifically at the end he's traumatised, then Rick is there to pick him up.

When he returns home, he tries to tell his family he loves them, and that reach for intimacy is shot down by both Beth and Summer. He is dejected and goes to bed to wallow. Enter Rick, he drags Morty from his bed to go on a motorbike ride. Before they set off, Rick says he implemented the changes he suggested. This shows that Rick actually listens to Morty, in his downtime he was thinking about Morty's criticisms of his rotating device. Compare this to Beth and Jerry, Morty has gone missing for days in the past and they have barely noticed he's gone.

Flashback all the way to S1 E1. Morty's parents think he's got learning difficulties, or some kind of intellectual disability. We now know that isn't the case, but without Rick's presence and intervention Morty's parents would think he's disabled because of how little they involve themselves in his school life.

This episode to me seemed to highlight the fragility of the Smith family, with the Morty funerals and the estate sales, it seems that multiversally the Smith family on average are prone to death, collapse, and tragedy. This is in stark contrast to our Rick - who stands as basically an immortal god. In this episode Morty talks about how he dies frequently, but the key thing to notice is that Rick always brings him back, unlike in these other realities where he died and Rick is just drinking instead.

This brings me to my read of the episode - this episode is telling us that Rick is actually a great thing in Morty's life, he is an invincible, all powerful caregiver who has been established at numerous points to hold genuine love for Morty. Where his real family fail him constantly, abandon him, and expect nothing of him, Rick is there to save him, trusts him with important tasks, and love him. The ending is telling us that Rick is Morty's real family, and that Morty doesn't need to worry about Rick leaving, because Rick actually considers *himself* to be his father figure.

General Discussion What happened to doofus rick’s diane?

Post image
862 Upvotes

when jerry is talking to doofus rick, doofus rick tells jerry he was assigned his morty because he never had any kids of his own. my guess was that he was so “unattractive” that diane in his universe never dated him. my bf said maybe all the diane’s were destroyed before doofus rick got the chance to meet his, but that makes me also wonder: did all rick’s meet their diane at the “same time”?

General Discussion ricks various design styles

Has anyone ever thought of how chaotic ricks designs are he prefers what looks terrible and like trash but then he has great designs too the new car for example looked amazing compared to the old one but he prefers the old trashcan car with broken seats and pillows in the back.

he cares once or twice with really good cold designs then he doesn't care most of the time, is this intended or just various animators that just has fun, most recent designs have gotten better more modern.

i'd argue that the modern ship should have been the new one for the rest of the episodes.

General Discussion Time travel.

Maybe this theory exists already and I don’t know about it. But I just realized that maybe the reason Rick doesn’t time travel is he “went back” over and over trying save Diane and it never worked (like that movie) so he swore off time travel 🤷🏼‍♂️

Shitpost Found out a colleague is a fan

In a teams meeting today, working from home, thought I was on mute, rolling a cigarette while rapping 'Summer and Tinkles, friends to the end. Group text the whole crew, my motherfucking friends!', and hear my colleague shout 'ooh Rick and Morty'. Thankfully only 8 people in the meeting, I felt so stupid. I'm 46, this was serious cyber security meeting. Anyway, chuckling about it now.

Theory I have a theory

Given that Farmer Rick died before the events of *Pocket Mortys*, I think he is the Ghost Rick found in the bathrooms; indeed, he treats Mortys with respect and affection. He even said: "I’ll never give up on you, Morty. I know you’re out there somewhere." Various Mortys are the embodiment of body horror. Since every Rick has a Morty and vice versa—but Ghost Rick and Ghost Morty don't—it is possible that, following their deaths, Farmer Rick and one of his Mortys ended up in the game, and Farmer Rick has been searching for him for quite some time.

General Discussion Post Credit Scenes

Embarrassed to say, I was four seasons in before I realized there was a post credit scene at the end of every episode.

The “play next episode” button would come up. I’d always hit the button, and I’d miss it. 🙄
