Friends, after coming back from a few days away, I've noticed a couple of trends that I'd like to address/nip in the bud. (thank you, Demonwolf, for catching the filter and clearing it out!) Most of this isn't covered in the rules - I'd really rather not have to make any more. ;)
A little grumbling is fine, but try not to rant. Yes, the way some people go about telling their story isn't intuitive or even runs directly counter to your own style (for example: the less we say about people calling eyes ORBS the better), and it's perfectly fine to grumble or poke fun, but (and this part is covered by the rules) don't be a jerk about it.
While there is no English-only rule, it really, really helps. I get it, ESL is hard, but I promise you google translate will get your point across well enough that most people are going to appreciate the effort you make to not force them to have to do it (which in most cases will be something along the lines of 'what are they saying? meh, next post'). There is also nothing wrong with being up front that English isn't your first language - nobody here is going to give you grief over that. We're all writers at the end of the day. ;)
Speaking of effort, again there is no 'low-effort post' rule, but please do try to put at least a little thought into your posts; those of you posting chapter announcements are fine, this is mostly for the rest of the post types. This includes asking for help, which, again is perfectly acceptable. However, nobody is going to respond to a very excited 'I want to write a fanfiction, pls halp!' At best it will get passed over. Try to include a few sentences describing what you're looking to do or what idea you're trying to develop, please!
Flair usage -- especially on NSFW posts for pity's sake! I know we have quite a few flairs to choose from, but this lets people know the category of your post. It also helps people if they want to filter results to look for specific content. If you're at all unsure which one to put use, just use RWBY Discussion. It's in the middle column near the bottom.
'Fixing' RWBY. Personally I dislike this attitude or style, whatever you want to call it. I also happen to know for a fact that there are a lot of fanfiction writers in the community that feel similarly. I try to look at these types of stories as AU with good intentions, but the more aggressive the message is, the less interest I have. Yes you can post your chapters and if that's how you want to label it, you do you. Just don't be a jerk about it, 'kay?
For those that haven't seen in the other stickied post, there was an official rules update that I will repeat here: Self-promotion means announcing your story, not advertising your crowd-funding hopes and dreams. Please do not solicit money for work based on copyrighted material. That's how you get subreddits shut down.
Update, December 12th:
(did some cleanup/made things clearer)
Thank you for your time and attention! Merry Crumbles for those of you celebrating, and happy writan to all! <3

So, Jacques's sent a "rescue party". They're probably going to need a rescue themselves.

“Everyone remember, we have two primary targets and one secondary. Everyone else is unimportant.”
The speaker reached up to grip a bar overhead as the Bullhead flew through the air. He wore a dusty blue bomber jacket over an ash grey tactical vest and white shirt. A shotgun club of pristine steel hung off his belt as he spoke.
“All three of these kids are active aura-users with experience fighting Grimm, as are their team members. So do not take them lightly.” He pointed out the side of the vehicle to the shuttle that was wheeling around to land below and then the other direction to the second bullhead. “The plan is to overwhelm them with surprise and then bring them to the shuttle for quick transit north.”
“Are there any questions?”
As soon as he said that, a beam of bright green light sliced through the left wing of the shuttle turning its approach into a crash landing. Out the other side, the second bullhead’s engines were suddenly crackling with yellow lightning as they smoked out and that craft quickly lost altitude.
“Oh, bloody...” Someone said a moment before swirling circular symbols surrounded their craft and launched icicles into several vital parts of the craft.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The wind rushed through Weiss’s hair as she made herself a spear to reduce air resistance as she watched the tumbling air-craft below her getting progressively larger. As she came level with it and eyed the mercenaries struggling to get some sort of hold of the situation she summoned a gravity glyph and flipped to catch her feet on it. As she was launched outward, she saw Gambol Shroud wrap around the wing giving Blake an avenue to join her.

So one of my friends I met through online D&D dragged me to his server where we would watch My Hero Academia together, because it's his hyperfixation. Well, as punishment in return, I showed him RWBY because it's my hyperfixation, then we dragged a third person into it. Well in this server they share fan art they get from the MHA community, and sometimes I stumble across one about RWBY I want to share with them. Now I've remembered one I saw from around Vol. 4. It had Pyrrha's ghost comforting Jaune before disappearing, with Jaune left to cry to himself before wiping his tears and moving on.

I'm looking to see if anyone might be willing to help me build 2 fanfictions either through discussions. or roleplaying out scenarios.
Here are my fic ideas:
1) Arc family - Jaune arc is the only born child of the Arcs. However, his parents end up adopting several other members of the RWBY cast to be his siblings. Now he's attending Beacon alongside a few of his siblings.
2) Crossover Shenanigans (title pending) - Jaune notices an odd trend. Suddenly a lot of the geeky stuff he likes, is leaking into reality. It starts with a card shop a suspiciously familiar old man who runs it, and it only gets worst from there.

The first proper chapter of my RWBY rewrite is now up on AO3. This rewrite is not intended to "fix" RWBY but is rather a love letter to a series I adore as I practice my writing.
The world of Remnant has enjoyed a long period of peace between the Four Kingdoms of mankind. Yet this peace buckles and strains beneath the complexities of a futuristic, industrial society.
Ruby Rose, Wesley Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long apply to attend the prestigious huntsman academy: Beacon. Finding themselves on a team together, they will need to learn to work with one another as they learn how to become the defenders of humanity against the soulless monsters known as Grimm. But there are more than monsters who have sinister designs, and these four will need to decide if they will abide by the rules or plunge themselves into danger to do what is right.
The world lies on a knife's edge, but no one would notice. No one sees that the careful peace that has been defended for a hundred years is about to fall. And when it falls, can it be ever remade? Can this Remnant be reforged? Or will it burn away in the crucible of conflict?
You can read chapter 1 here, or read from the beginning, including the four prologues that are based off of the original Red, White, Black, and Yellow trailers here. I highly recommend starting from the start as there is a little bit more set up in these prologues than what the trailers provided for the main show.
Early on, things remain fairly similar to how they happened in the show, but over time the changes I've made will start to compound and the story will take on a different shape entirely.
Here is a little sample of the first chapter:
Roman Torchwick took a long drag from his cigar, leaning his head back against the wall of the van. Its tip burned bright red then dimmed as he exhaled a puff of smoke from his nose. Three broken ribs were excruciating, but there was no time to lay around and wait for them to heal. He glanced across to the man sitting across from him. The man glanced away, withering under Roman’s stare. Riding with him were five suited thugs from the Xiaong group. Well, the formerly Xiaong group, Roman mused. With Junior behind bars, the last of the family had fallen. They were going to need a new name. The Torchwick gang, perhaps? Ugh, how gauche.
The van came to a stop and they all stepped out into the darkened streets of Vale. There were no towering skyscrapers here, just crowded four to five story buildings with sloped shingled roofs crowded against one another. The street was lit by flickering lamps and signs backlit by harsh fluorescent light. The shattered moon was shrouded by the encroachment of clouds and the city was dark. Pedestrians were startled by the gang of criminals as they marched down the street, quickly ducking into alleyways or businesses to avoid being in their path. Roman headed the pack, cigar smoking in his mouth. He came to a stop and blew a cloud of fragrant smoke into the air. They had arrived.
From Dust Till Dawn was the name of a particularly renowned dust shop in the western district of the city. The brick building had an elegance to it that did not belong here in the dingy world of Roman’s domain. The interior was brightly lit, with large tubes of various types of dust lining the walls from which customers could refill their canisters. Behind the glass counter was a brilliant collection of fine dust crystals in all sorts of varieties and colors. The young woman at the counter looked up in fear as Roman approached.

It's been a while since I read it, and every time I look, the 3 same popular Ruby fics keep popping up.
Main plot
Ruby travels back in time away from Beacon (I think) and decides that she'll be sneaky in her takedown of Salem. She sets up camp in a warehouse on the bad side of Vale and plans to contact Young Ruby. They have each other's phone number and Old Ruby starts training her semblance use and other things. The older cast gained knowledge of Old Ruby. Old Ruby reveals her existence to the rest of team RWBY finally and then I can't remember...
DETAILS
I'm absolutely sure that Older Ruby hides her presence from the rest of team RWBY, and only communicates with Young Ruby (At first). It takes on this sort of manipulative/ grooming aspect.
Old Ruby finds and lives in a warehouse where she sleeps and plans. She also trains Young Ruby to use her semblance by stacking old boxes in that warehouse? (Honesty that's the part I remember the most)
GRAIN OF SALT (I'm like 30% sure this happens)
I think Qrow confronts Old ruby about talking to his niece, and why she's taking her away from her friends more to train. (They might have gotten into a lil fight)
I think Neo breaks in and spies on Old Ruby trying to see what shes up to. This may have also been Blake.(I just vaguely remember someone hiding the ceiling rafters)
Blake confronts Old ruby thinking Young Ruby is getting manipulated by an older person.
The story was decently long with multiple chapters. The POV mostly stayed with one of the Ruby's and sometimes switched to others briefly.
Please help me I need to know if this fic ever got updated or if I ever even finished it.

Team RWBY talks about communication and training.

------------------------------------------------
Penny blinked and looked around at the interactions. “Are we still talking about the exercise?”
Weiss turned to Yang. “If this is about the other night, I encouraged you to go out. You all had fun, and I was fine.”
“Yeah, but there’s no real rush either.” Blake pointed out. “We’re busy for a week and have to wait, but there’ll be other chances. Besides, that’s just the most recent thing. I know I’ve let myself fall out of the group once or twice while we’ve been here. I think Ruby has too.”
“Sometimes, I just don’t want to be anybody’s problem.” Ruby bit the corner of her mouth and looked away.
Weiss turned to look at her and tried to think of the times she’d seen the other girl… and the times she hadn’t. “Ruby, no, you’re not a problem.”
Yang watched her sister and looked around. “Okay, we’ve been lucky the last couple of months that the only times there’s been a problem, we’ve been on hand to help out. But yeah, we’re not keeping checked in as well as we did in Beacon.”
“It was easier in the dorm.” Ruby stared at the piece of broccoli on her fork a moment before eating it. “We saw each other at the end of each night and could check in.”
Weiss considered that a moment and nodded. “The separate rooms might be bringing back… certain bad habits.”
Penny frowned as she thought that through and tilted her head as she looked at Weiss. “What bad habits are you speaking about?”
“Well I’m going to guess that Weiss is like and sometimes feels solitude is safer…” Blake let her voice trail off.

UPDATE A major plot point is that when Future!Ruby touches Ruby with her semblance their memories get combined / pass down. So Ruby starts taking on this edger personality from the trauma that invads her young mind.

Sienna has her own things to deal with.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/90911546/chapters/244080441
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The mission has been completed, Madam Khan.” Trifa stepped forward and handed her a packet of files which she accepted.
“Ma’am is plenty good enough.” Sienna took the files in question.
“The intel you had for me was very good, Mada….ma’am.” The spider faunus commented. “And I don’t think I’ve seen forged identification nearly as good as these.”
Sienna smiled. “Don’t get used to them. If make too frequent use it’ll mean undue risk to the asset. Give me your overall report. What did you learn as an intern?”
“The director hires and promotes primarily by means of nepotism.” She nervously licked her lips. “There are a few team members and one manager that predate her promotion. He is desperate to catch his boss in some manner of wrongdoing but he hasn’t yet learned that one of her nephews is currently embezzling money from the company.”
Sienna nodded. “Excellent work, some leading words at the right time and the embezzlement begins to look like bribery. Stealing they’d brush under the rug and handle quietly, but betrayal they will want to make a public example of. A few more things like this and we can get Jacques' inner circle to start tearing itself apart and leave our hands clean. How clean was your exit?”
“Oh, I insulted the director’s darling boy.” Trifa smiled. “I got fired.”
“Good, I’ll pass this on to other hands from this point. Get some downtime in while you’re here in Menagerie.”
“Yes, ma’am.” The woman half-bowed before turning around and leaving the room.
And with that, Sienna turned to another set of files. Charted routes and manifests submitted to the Atlas trade commission. Everything she needed to know which ships or flights to prioritize and where might be the best place for an ambush.

I have been pondering how to make RWBY's magic system work for some time now and think I have finally figured it out! I took heavy inspiration from Hunter X Hunter's Nen system, as well as an honorable mention to Full Metal Alchemist and Jujutsu Kaisen.
I was able to keep most of the concepts that have been introduced with the exception of the Silver Eyes. If anyone was curious about my decision to get rid of them entirely, the simple answer is that I had no way to convince myself that it is cool, much less required in any capacity. Besides, introducing a dojutsu without any connection to the system is just a bad idea lore wise, making it my task unnecessarily harder than it has to be.
Before going over the main topic of this post, I wanted to address the Faunus and half-Human/half-Fanus offspring.
Unlike in the original, Faunus have more than just the shared trait of night vision. Just as the animal kingdom is highly diverse, so too are the Faunus and Hybrids. Some have night vision, other's are better swimmers, there are even a few who can fly without the need of a semblance, etc.
For instance, Blake has all of the traits or "superpowers", that a typical cat would have like claw retraction, incredible reflexes, and even being able to sense changes in weather.
When it comes to comparing the average Human to a Faunus/Hybrid, human's tend to lose out as they don't have the same advantages as their beastlier counterparts. These trump cards do become less relevant when aura and semblances are involved, however.
Another thing I wanted to address was Dust. They still serve their purpose in the story of giving people the power of the elements, but they aren't used as prevalently by the Awakened. Rather, they are regularly found in everyday appliances or are used as the primary fuel source across Remnant for automobiles and other machinery as they are more proficient than petroleum and environmental friendly.
Because most of the deposits from the moon fell on Solitas, it is actually a bit uncommon for Dust to be used in a lethal manner by military forces outside of Atlas, who have a monopoly over its research and distribution. That being said, what Atlas has achieved with its contents have made them the most advanced army in the world.
There is less elements than in the original because it was incredibly difficult trying to give any plausible explanation on how wind dust exist or how it can be utilized by society without appearing silly. The best I could come up with was turning them into a.c. units, but then I remembered how ice dust would be a better alternative. Perhaps a combination of the two to act as fans?
Either way, I'm sticking with fire dust, ice dust, lightning dust, and hard-light dust for now.
Every intelligent species within the world of Remnant born of flesh and blood is brought into existence with a soul. Though still a mysterious concept, it is one that has proven itself to be true nonetheless. Unfortunately, the conditions for harnessing such power is quite limited with the most common method being the most dangerous. Theoretically, it is possible for all of Human and Faunus kind to gain access to their soul, but it would be a fool's errand.
To awaken one to their soul, it would require the dangerous act of being attacked by a Grimm unprotected due to their unique ability to siphon one's soul for themselves. For you see, those unenlightened are bound to their soul on a physical level and vice-versa. Any wound an average person receives from the Grimm is practically asking for a slow and agonizing death as not only will their body need to heal, but so too must their soul.
Without enough talent to instinctively mend the soul on your own or a mentor figure to guide you through the process, it wouldn't be farfetched to say your soul could bleed out before your body does, and that isn't considering if the poison doesn't take you out first.
For those seeking to still awaken, a much more safer option is available, but far more limited. An Awakened of the Spiritual class is required for the procedure due their greater relationship to the soul. Sadly, they are the rarest out of all of the classes with the majority of them using this to their advantage to garner wealth. This means you have a higher chance of being attacked by a Grimm than purchasing a Spiritualist for their services or even coming across one.
If one does manage to survive their Grimm encounter or receive aid from a Spiritualist, they can count themselves lucky to have made it into the 1% of the population.
Whereas the soul is the catalyst behind the mysticism of the Awakened, harnessing that life force turns into energy that makes its user almost supernatural. That energy is called Aura. It makes you stronger and faster than anything the unenlightened are capable of producing. You could shatter a boulder into sand, perceive the world in slow motion, and survive a building collapsing on top of you.
Like all things in life, however, not all Awakened are equal. Some have more reserves than others, which seems dependent on who you are as a person. Those who are more active in life tend to have more aura than those who are less active. This is important as the more aura you have, the more powerful you can become. Alas this is made even worse when you factor in how difficult it is to increase your reserves. If you simply lack the capacity to change who you are as a person then you may as well accept your fate of being above average in this department to be void.
Not all hope is lost, however, as anyone can increase their reserves, albeit temporarily. Through emotions of intense passion can this be achieved. Just as adrenaline prepares your body for quick physical action by triggering the "fight-or-flight" response during stressful or dangerous situations, profound emotions work the same way for the soul.
Semblances is where the true magic happens. Semblances rely on aura to fuel their activation, so it is important to pace yourself, especially in the midst of battle. Each semblance is unique to the individual, representing who they are on a foundational level. Through a series of tests conducted at Hunter institutes, an Awakened can assemble an idea of what their semblance is at its barest basics, it is then up to the Hunter to nurture their gift as best they see fit.
For instance, Weiss uncovered her class as an Evoker, and then went on to create a concentrated orb of aura that she could command absolutely. She would later go on to develop this orb further, molding it into a more combat efficient familiar, the first of her summons, Arma Gigas.
Transitioning into Classes, there are six categories; Alchemist (transmuter), Augmenter (enhancer), Elementalist (emitter), Evoker (conjurer), Invoker (manipulator), and Spiritualist (specialist).
Alchemists can alter their aura to take on the properties of anything they can truthfully conceptualize and understand. This can range from something as simple and straightforward as turning your aura into the effect of a brick to something more vague like gravity.
Augmenters can magnify whatever they choose to focus on. Whether it be themselves, other people or even objects, they remain the most balanced of the classes with their above average offense and defensive capabilities.
Elementalists can generate and discharge the very make-up of the universe. They are the most expansive and well-defined class, as their choice in application being the most limited with how effortless their process is.
Evokers can create anything they can imagine from their aura so long as it doesn't go against the rules of nature itself. As long as they have aura, whatever object they conjure up will be infinite in its supply and ready to serve.
Invokers can exploit the laws of physics, though only to a degree, for nearly any purpose they see fit. This makes their class the most difficult, however, as they must have the same understanding as an Alchemist to employ the lessened restraints that apply to them in comparison to everyone else.
Spiritualists are the oddity of the classes as they have nothing specific about them outside of their complete abnormality to freely allocate themselves into any class they wish. This gives them their jack-of-all trades, but master-of-none status.
Oaths are a pledge to oneself that is adamant and true. They allow anyone to gain a quick boost in power at the cost of something else, following the Law of Equivalent Exchange. These contracts can only be made during heightened emotional states, as previously mentioned, where the contractor is temporarily empowered by their passion. These vows are usually permanent and can result in dire consequences if ever breached.
That will conclude my re-work of the RWBY magic system! I would love some feedback and discussion in the comments, so please don't hold back on my account!
