CEO Webcast

Just curious what people thought of the CEO webcast yesterday and how he addressed the union contracts negotiations. He seemed much more congenial than Ben's email last Friday. Is this part of the game, good cop, bad cop? Or was he genuine in wanting to work with the union to find something that works for both sides?

Yeah, I’d like to think his comments about code of conduct and “not gonna fly on both sides” was somewhat aimed at Ben lol. But that’s just me spinning it to my liking.

That’s how I took it. I haven’t seen any inappropriate conduct from anyone except Ben.

To be fair, Ben look like a child throwing a tantrum without Kelly saying anything. Kelly's statement just made it clear.

SPEEA is roughly 10% of the workforce. I suspect that is big enough that Kelly is providing some direct "oversight" to the negotiations.

That 10% is the only reason Boeing can release the new airplanes. SPEEA has the bull by that balls.

It’s less about the size and more about if he doesn’t get the 777-9 certified by the end of this year, the compensation Boeing will be paying will NOT be funny

Because all those contracts have been renegotiated and the airlines did NOT give Boeing a lot of wiggle room to mess up again.

I think this is less “good cop, bad cop” and more “good coms, bad coms”.

What Nimmergut & Ortberg said aren’t that different. How they said it is very different.

I agree, except Kelly said they intend to work with the union to find something that works, which Ben more or less put on the opposite front.

I'm just curious if it is planned out at the top, or if different people have different angles, and it's not necessarily a concerted effort.

There's probably no way to know for sure, but maybe the better question to ask is, what framing should we choose to operate from that gives us the best shot?

This is a prime part of Nimmergut’s bad comms. He created a situation where the union could have said, “we are still willing to negotiate, it’s the company who is unwilling to reach an agreement.”

Intentional or not, I think Kelly had to walk that back.

There’s no indication that this is a good cop, bad cop scenario. The CEO is not even part of negotiations.

It would be good cop, bad cop if another contract negotiator on Boeing said what Kelly said.

He hasn't been directly involved but he can pull strings and give instructions to the negotiators and could even get directly involved with negotiations if he chose to. Ultimately he's at the top of the company and controls the direction of it

I don’t doubt that. I’m just trying to refute what people are saying about good cop/bad cop.

Unless Kelly hints at endorsing the next contract offer (which I highly doubt) then this won’t said tactic. Kelly’s response is what I expected from Boeing’s SPEEA negotiation team in the first place.

Representatives of the company are also going to say very little about negotiations or a contract when there's not an offer on the table because they don't want to accidentally say anything that could be interpreted as direct dealing

Calhoun was a useless sack of garbage in a suit. One of Kellys first action as CEO was moving his main office to the Seattle Delivery Center. Speaks volumes about his priorities.

I noticed in one of the SPEEA articles sent out this morning, the company’s response to SPEEA putting contract jobs on the website was through a spokesperson and not directly attributed to Nimmergut.
