I’ve been ordering burritos from Osiel for years now. When I found out he had a food truck, I had to give it a try. hiii i live in one of the neighborhoods in san mateo that has 2 hr parking mon-sat. this might be a dumb question, but do you think they really enforce this on the weekends?

i totally get m-f, people might abuse residential parking for caltrain. but it makes me hesitant to invite friends/family over earlier in the day on saturdays. i could always say come at 4, since they'll be in the 2 hour limit by the time it ends. but what if i wanted friends over for a day hangout that would be longer than 2 hrs?? am i just over thinking this lol

I am getting serious about earthquake retrofitting my house. I have been putting it off for years but after seeing the news about the Earthquake Brace + Bolt program opening up again I realized I cannot ignore it anymore. My house is a single story bungalow about 900 square feet built in the 1950s. It has a crawlspace and I am pretty sure it has cripple walls that need bracing.

I am trying to get a realistic idea of what this costs in San Mateo. I know every house is different but I am looking for ballpark figures. I have seen some estimates online ranging from 3,000 to 7,000 for standard foundation bolting and cripple wall bracing, but I imagine it varies a lot depending on the home's specific construction and foundation. The EBB program offers grants of up to 3,000, with income-qualified homeowners potentially eligible for additional funding, which could help offset the cost .

Has anyone here gone through the process recently in San Mateo? What did you end up paying for your retrofit? Were there any unexpected costs that came up?

Brand new account here—I finally joined because I saw someone posted my petition on ALPRs a couple weeks back and I have been thinking about how to drum up community action. I’m really happy to see the petition has gotten some traction, but that alone isn’t going to sway the city. If you’re interested in this issue I’d love to hear your thoughts on developing this movement.

For background, here’s a summary of my communications with the city:

1. I sent my original letter to the entire council on August 10th. Mayor Loraine responded by informing me that the PD will make a presentation to council on “crime prevention resources,” which will include ALPRs, tentatively scheduled for the October 5th council meeting.
2. I followed up asking that the demands in my letter be included on the agenda as actionable items (ie, the council votes on them). He said he couldn’t guarantee that would happen but that the agenda item will “allow for such questions and concerns to be raised in a public forum” and any further action will occur upon support by a majority of the council. He also said that his understanding of the issue was “enriched” upon becoming aware of my concerns.
3. Finally, an analyst from the Office of the Chief contacted me to more or less regurgitate the information I had necessarily reviewed in order to write my August letter with regard to the PD ALPR policy and their SOP on ALPR use. The tone of this response in particular came off as...blithly patronizing, let's say. I have not replied.

These things have got to go. Period. There’s just nothing good that can come from the police having access to the travel habits of every single driver who passes through the city for rolling 30-day periods. The mere existence of that data is a huge problem, and the claim that these are important tools for public safety just isn’t borne out.

My current plans are to go to the next couple city council meetings to speak during public comment periods just to keep the issue front of mind (by a twist of fate I can’t make it to any of the October meetings). Is anyone else able to join me, either leading up to or at the October 5th meeting?

I think it would also put the pressure on if people would individually email their council person about their concerns, and hold them to providing a response. I am not an experienced organizer, so I’d welcome advice from anyone who knows better about these kinds of efforts.
