Never-before-seen woven structure that forms naturally inside a crystal about study Spontaneous formation and optical manipulation of a woven domain fabric in a ferroelectric crystal (PDF 1, 2, 3)

Ferroelectric materials contain regions called domains, where electric charges are slightly separated, creating a preferred electrical orientation. When scientists cooled a crystal of potassium lithium tantalate niobate (KTN:Li) (a solid-solution perovskite) these domains unexpectedly organized themselves into a complex three-dimensional woven pattern at around 17°C, which is close to room temperature. The woven structure forms naturally, remains stable once created, and reappears after reheating and cooling, although each time with a different pattern. Researchers also discovered that parts of the weave could be altered using a green laser, causing sections of the pattern to disappear and reorganize. Because this effect is not simply caused by heating, it suggests unique underlying physics.A.I.

In this particular material, some groups of atoms can slightly shift their electrical charge in one direction or another, creating tiny regions that all point the same way called domains. When researchers cooled the crystal, these domains spontaneously organized themselves into something resembling a woven fabric or braided basket. Imagine dropping thousands of tiny magnetic needles onto a table and discovering that, without anyone guiding them, they weave themselves into an intricate three-dimensional pattern.

As for the green laser, my understanding is that it likely injects energy through optical excitation of electrons rather than merely heating the material. Changing the electronic state slightly changes the energy landscape that determines domain stability. The woven structure then relaxes into a new configuration. Think of it like nudging a pile of marbles that was resting in a shallow valley: the marbles settle into a different arrangement because the shape of the valley changed. See also:

This is actually a really big deal because it can act as ram that can be written directly by laser light and it's spectrum dependant.

Sabine Hossenfelder thinks, this is Nobel Prize worthy finding, but I guess that Nobel Prizes are now awarded for a different type of discovery, one that is more closely tied to experimental methodology. This effect appears to be merely an interesting structural curiosity. For memory storage applications, the effect would need to be more robust (a temperature of 17°C erases it) and less diffuse / more miniaturized. Current memory devices rely on well-defined phases (amorphous and crystalline), which can be distinguished even within islands only about 500 atoms across. Perhaps this phenomenon could find applications in display technologies, such as colored "inks" or smart tags working in tandem with LCD screens.

I know nothing about this...but... this is reddit so I'm asking...

Could the 'domain' being excited by the green lazer somehow create a vacuum in one or more of the other spectrums, causing the orientation to be related to frequency somehow?

You're thinking in a direction that is quite natural, the only part I'd rephrase is "vacuum." In condensed matter physics, we usually talk about creating or removing charge carriers, excitations, or occupied states, rather than creating a vacuum.

When green light hits the crystal, it may free charges that were trapped at defects. Those charges move around and partially neutralize the electric fields that stabilize the weave. Once that support is weakened, the weave can relax into a simpler arrangement. The authors suggest something very close to this mechanism.

The fact that green light works while infrared does not is a strong hint that the effect depends on photon energy, not just temperature. In that sense, the response is related to frequency because different frequencies access different electronic states in the material. That idea is quite compatible with the observations.
