New title tagging rule & Spammers

As some regulars here may have noticed, this subreddit recieves an astronomical amount of spam, both from human as well as bot spammers, for it's relatively small size. Coming from modding various large subreddits, including one that's literally about products, this amount of spam is not normal. Despite a lot of our less agressive attempts to filter out spam (example, filtering out posts that say "for sale", "rent", or "Services") we still get quite a lot that slip by.

[1] [2] [3]

Why is this subreddit getting so much spam? Who knows. ¯\(°_o)/¯

But we will be resorting to the one thing that has worked for various larger communities, like r/food : mandatory title tags.

From now on, all posts will require at least a tag of one of the below:

[Self]
[Found]
[Help]

You may add words to the tags like:

[I found] this chicken carved out of abestos!

or

[Help me] carve a chicken out of abestos

For flexibility, but the bare minimum requirement for post titles will be that it must contain one of those words surrounded by brackets.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to modmail us, or ask here.

Self (WIP) Looking for honest feedback on my craft stick sculptures [help]

I create wooden sculptural pieces (each takes 3-6 months of full-time work). I was selected for a juried outdoor festival and a 2-month museum show—but both times it was the same piece. It didn’t even get much attention in person, which makes me wonder if I just got lucky once.

Looking for honest feedback:

**1. Gallery-worthy?** Does this read as serious art to you, or amateur craft?
**2. Pricing:** How do you price work when labor is huge but material is cheap? Does the craft stick medium tank the value?
**3. What works and what doesn’t?**

Not looking to get rich, just want to price fairly and know if this is heading somewhere real.

The 'Corporate Goddesses' of San Francisco [Self]

Twelve ghostly figures watch over SF from a rooftop perch 23 stories up. Artist Muriel Castanis, known specifically for her eerie draped figures, created the 12-foot high sculptures for the Philip Johnson-designed building in 1982, looking out from the four sided rooftop, three to a side. Since they were revealed they have been interpreted as everything from grim reapers to angels, but the artist described them as "corporate goddesses."

Hey guys! I wanted to share my latest piece. It's a hand-crafted wood sculpture of the blissful Shiba Inu getting a scalp massage.

  • Material: Wood (painted/stained)
  • Process: Power carving for blockout, hand chisels for texturing.

Let me know what you think! Would love to hear your feedback on the fur texture and expression.

Help (WIP) Hello sculptors, I need some help for a little project. [Help]

I have an 11-year-old daughter, and we’re both artists, so for Halloween every year, we always work together to make her an insane costume to stand out from everyone.

This year, we had the idea for a tree costume, but we’re having some trouble brainstorming materials to build the structure (branches, bark, etc.) with some certain criteria. Would someone please help us with an idea? The criteria to keep in mind are as follows:

1) the branches have to be light enough as to not be unwieldy

2) she plans to wear it to school for a contest, so the costume must let someone sit at a desk, move around, etc. (we were thinking to have the main branchy part come from only the shoulders up to make this easier)

3) could we find something as affordable as possible? (we are a middle-class family for reference)

4) it should hopefully take no longer two months (this is on me, I admittedly got preoccupied over the summer 😅**)**

3) we’re aiming for a fairly accurate finished look :)

It would be wonderful if someone could point us in the right direction! Thanks for your time 🎃👻

I made it using real crab parts (no crabs were harmed, only the empty exoskeletons found along the beach), toothpicks, twine, fabric, and paints

It's meant to be a 4 meters tall 'tank' for a crew of 3-ish to travel around the desert

(Idk if this is the right sub-Reddit)

Been sculpting for 3 years and decided to finally post some photos. This piece took me approximately 8 months on and off since I’m a slow worker haha (Epoxy clay, acrylic paint, rhinestones and resin).

Self (Complete) [Self] An Octopus Tray I Sculpted with Air Dry Clay

I made this octopus tray with air dry clay and had a lot of fun working on the tentacles and all the little textures.

I shaped the whole piece by hand, let it dry, then sanded and painted it with acrylics. I wanted the octopus to feel like it was actually wrapping itself around the tray instead of just sitting on top of it.

It’s also functional, so I can use it to hold little things on my desk.

Still experimenting with air dry clay sculpture, and I’d love to hear what you think of this one.

[help] Looking for open studio/residency in the US

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi sculptors,

I am in the US and am interested in focusing on clay sculpture between the coming October and January. I can potentially travel anywhere in the US. I don't have a formal art background but I have three years of experience with clay and am an independent learner.

Do you have recommendations for open studios/community studios/residency programs/apprenticeships where I could come and work on sculpture for these months? A bonus would be studios where I can bring my dog with, but not a must.

Picture of one of my sculptures for reference.

🇭🇺 MAGYAR – bemutatkozó szöveg

Cím (A vasgyermek bölcsője): Az utolsó ember létfenntartó reaktora

A működés során:

🇬🇧 ENGLISH – project description

Working title: Life-Support Reactor for the Last Human

This work is a continuously operating, mechanical kinetic installation presenting a fictional yet functionally real life-support nuclear system. Within its narrative logic, the machine cannot be shut down: stopping it would result in the death of the last remaining human.

The system is entirely mechanical and electromechanical. There is no software, microcontroller, or digital control involved. The machine is governed by cam switches and only two diode bridges.

During operation:

rotating mechanical assemblies, motors, and pneumatic components are constantly active,

analog gauges continuously indicate system states,

internal lighting and motion create simulated instability and fault conditions,

the system periodically appears to be failing, then re-stabilizes itself,

breakdowns may reoccur at any time.

The machine produces a constant mechanical sound (murmuring, clicking). This sound is not a side effect but evidence of operation and an integral part of the work.

Approximately 98% of the installation is built from discarded industrial components, including HVAC parts, automotive systems, household appliances, printers, and pneumatic elements.

A harmadik angol képen még ez a mondat látszik:

It functions as a time-based, pseudo-self-regulating system, balancing operation, malfunction, and recovery.

Help (WIP) [Help] I would like to make realistic eyes for a sculpture and would like advice

Hopefully the flair is correct. I am making a semi-original sculpture (I was given an old Classic scale Breyer horse and completely butchered it and have been reassembling it. Needless to say it is NOT a horse any more and has a lot of original work added on. I simply used it's parts as a 'skeleton' haha.)

I would like to make eyes, (or rather, at least ONE good eye) but the eye I have in mind is a fantasy-type eye. I would like it to be about as close to realistic as one can get with a fantasy creature. It would not need a visible sclera; only a visible iris and pupil.

I guess where my hang up is, I have the head and sockets made up but nothing is painted yet. I would like to make the eye/s so that I can 'fit' them as I work to make sure it is looking alright. It has an opened mouth, so I can technically continue to work on the piece and 'finalize' it, I just have to affix eye/s before I can 'seal' the mouth and sculpt that, as that is where I would be inserting the eye/s. If it would be better to widen the sockets and make a round eye that I suspend in sculpting medium to cure in place I can do that, too, I just have the eye lids outline 'shape' the way I like them. I am not super well equipped with tools for working on really hard plastic (like cutting holes etc) so the ones I have made have been very much a labour-intensive task.

Anyways: I suspect resin casting would be the best bet, but I would need to likely either make my own mold or find a mold that supports several sizes so that I can figure out which one would fit best. I should note that I am very bad at measuring things/numbers, which is part of where my anxiety/hesitation is coming from. Additionally, the pupils are not round, they're vertical beaded pupils (like certain geckos/fish).

If I am forgetting any pertinent information that might help get answers/proper advice, please let me know! I will say that if anyone here is familiar with Breyer horses, they'll have an idea of the size of the head. The eye/s on this project are significantly larger than a Breyer's eyes, though. Think of like... certain frogs/lizards with the big eyes, haha.

Trying out a base for this work in progress, it's a log maybe oak I've had for years, I want to give the idea that he's crossing unstable ground maybe in water.

How do I even sculpt water?!

[Help] I need help with a plaster sculpture I'm making

I'm making a plaster sculpture (20x15cm aprox) and I wanted to paint it with neon pink spray paint. After a quick google search I decided to use gesso to seal the sculpture so that I could paint over it. Now the gesso has been drying for like 30 hours and it's still a little sticky and touching the sculpture will cause little chunks of the gesso to come off the surface.

I don't really have time to redo it or take off all the acrylic gesso and start over. Should I just wait longer and hope it hardens or should I try to apply something else on top of it?

Ok, these are my Danger Noodle sculptures… these represent my improvement over time. The one where Villy doesn’t go all the way around was done last October and the other one I finished a coupl of weeks ago. Of course assistance with details like the lable and the face of Villy because I am blind… but everything else, including majority of the painting, was done by me. #BlindArtist
