Carnival Conquest interrupted a sea day in the Caribbean on 26 August to rescue the lone occupant of a disabled sailboat. The person had been stranded for 10 days, according to WHIO.
The rescue came after the ship's bridge received a distress relay from rescue authorities. The Conquest changed course, located the small sailboat, and brought the mariner safely aboard. Fast work.
Passengers watched from their balconies as the Conquest pulled alongside the sailboat. In a statement confirmed to Cruise Hive, Carnival said the Conquest diverted to the sailboat's location, brought the sole occupant safely aboard, and that the individual remained in the care of the ship's team.
The rescue took roughly two hours. Carnival Conquest reached St. George's, Grenada, on schedule with no meaningful delay to the itinerary. The rescued mariner remained aboard in the ship's care and was expected to be debarked at the next port.

U-154’s commander, Oskar Kush, was a well-trained German commander who despised fascism. On May 8, 1943 the U-54 encountered the Panamanian motor tanker Motocarline of > 8000 tons. From 400 yards—arrogant Nazi first officer Ulrich Abel—arrogantly took claim of the attack and fired two torpedoes which missed. Kush tried saving the attack, but his torpedo struck Motocarline without detonating. Abel would later report Kush’s anti-fascist ideology, having him executed in 1944.

At 1047 hours the Wahoo (Dudley ‘Mush’ Morton) fired three torpedoes at the Buyo Maru (master Kazutaka Takehito) sailing in a small convoy off New Guinea. Two of them strike the Buyo in the engine room causing her to stop. Takehito ordered the Indian prisoners of war be evacuated from the holds and the crew and passengers (including IJA troops, auxiliary personnel) to prepare to abandon ship. At 1133 Morton fired a coup de grâce that was a dud, then another at 1135 that struck the Buyo Maru underneath the funnel. Takehito ordered the ship abandoned and 1,000 survivors (many of them Indian allied POWS) abandoned ship in the lifeboats and rafts.
USS Wahoo surfaced at 1315 hours and Morton ordered his crew to open fire at the lifeboats and rafts with rifles, but when this proved unsuccessful he then ordered the submarine’s main cannon fired at the boats, sinking 7 lifeboats and 5 rafts killing 269 Indian POWs, 86 Army soldiers, and 1 crewman. The remaining survivors were picked up by a Japanese destroyer.

These two ships were burned in Boston Harbor to salvage remaining scrap that weren't destroyed by the fire. For the final image, the already fire destroyed ship is how the ones from WM&S looked after being burned

At 1137 hours on November 3, 1942 the U-160 attacked convoy TAG-18 from behind the escort screen for the third time and fired four torpedoes at the Venezuelan tanker La Salina, the Panamanian tanker Leda, the Norwegian tanker Petrell, and the American Meton. Only the Leda was torpedoed and sunk. A torpedo missed Esso Caracas and struck the British cargo ship Gypsum Empress, sinking her.
The Leda was struck forward of the engine room and caught fire. The survivors were transferred to the La Salina and the Leda was taken in tow. She sank a day later

I saw in the news that Japan is sending the Kunisaki to assist us with the wildfires in Kalimantan, along with three helicopters and hundreds of personnel. I know my family and I are really grateful for Japan's assistance, and I thought it would be interesting to learn more about the ship being used for this mission. This is also the first time that Japan is supporting an overseas firefighting operation.

I understand why a military transport ship would be useful for moving the equipment, people and resources for the operation, but I am curious about the choice of this specific ship.

Does anyone have any ideas into what makes this specific ship particularly suitable for this kind of disaster response operation?

A crane overturned and caught fire at Mumbai Port on 31 August 2026. Two operators were injured.
The incident happened during cargo unloading at the port's Ballard Pier Extension. Video published by Hindustan Times and Livemint showed heavy black smoke rising from the site, visible across a wide area of the port.
Maritime Executive and The Hindu both reported that the two people hurt were crane operators. The crane collapsed first, with fire following shortly after.
