What did I do wrong

Old 80s or 90s era P220. Wanted to lighten the recoil spring and mainspring together. 20lb braided spring sucked. Swapped it to the 18lb and now recoil is very smooth and nice.
Just took off my E2 grips and found the new 18 Wolff mainspring I ordered doesn’t fit. What do I do?

Do I have to get a different strut or do I find a longer 18lb spring?

My guess is yes you have the old OEM strut and you will need the new version and spring cup for that spring to work. GREYGUNS as mentioned has the whole kit.

Here’s what I’d do:

  1. Call the company and raise the issue you’re having. If they help you/refund you, great, if not, also great.

  2. Depending on the verdict from #1, reach out to greyguns. Their stuff is the truth, and will fit your needs.

If what showed up is that smaller coil spring, it's not for a P series. The reduced force springs aren't visually different, and while SIG have gone through several different struts and spring seats that have to be matched with each other correctly, the spring itself never actually changed.

Whether the mistake was what you ordered or what Wolff sent, that's not the right thing. It should say on the bag what they at least thought it was.

(to make this very clear: you don't need a different hammer strut or seat if what you have worked before, you just need a spring that's actually made for a P220)

This is my invoice. Think Wolff sent the wrong spring?

If it's that smaller one in the photo, that visibly doesn't fit the strut? Yes. Like I said, the struts and seats change over the years, but the springs don't. Even the reduced power ones are indistinguishable to the eye. The only dimension that should look different at a glance is that the new one might be longer because it isn't tired yet.

I received some incorrect springs from them in an order a few years ago, it happens.

I ordered an 18lb hammer sprig from Wolff.
