50 cent doesn't just hold grudges, he invests in them.

106

u/Peetal_Cloud 20h ago

spending more time and money to trademark a diss line than she spent making the actual song

118

u/praeteria 19h ago

30k is pocket change for 50. It's not about the money.

125

u/LIONLDN 19h ago

Exactly, he really gets a kick out of being a Master Troll 😼

37

u/Green-Rule-1292 18h ago

It would be way funny if he used the domain to sell merch with the phrase on it and made more than 30k from it

I like the story about his beef with Ja Rule; 50 bought out the entire front row of Ja's concert so he'd be rocking to empty seats.

76

u/Wiplazh 20h ago

Since him and Eminem are friends and they both beef with Ja Rule, I kinda suspect he deserves it.

23

u/IllMathematician8994 16h ago

Eminem and Ja didn’t really have beef in my opinion

Ja tried to use Em as collateral damage while dissing 50 and started talking about “the white boy you hang with family”

Eminem went off because of his daughter. I doubt em waste time with a response to Ja otherwise

6

u/Wiplazh 16h ago

Oh yeah that was him! Thats why he dissed him like 50 times in Coup de Grace

17

u/Regular-Ordinary9807 17h ago

Ja was dumb for not capitalizing. He could have upgraded the next row of fans tickets so that they got to be in the front, and gave 50 a shout out.

6

u/Necessary_DaNoodle 12h ago

He had no idea that was going to happen. He was just excited to be touring.

4

u/Regular-Ordinary9807 11h ago

Pretty funny and I can see him being caught off guard, but after the 2nd song I would have told everyone to move up. Courtesy of 50!

10

u/One_Broccoli_8000 15h ago

don’t forget the mixtape cover with The Game in a thong so people think he was a stripper

48

u/BadgerAwkward 20h ago

He takes beef to a new level lol. I totally understand why he got shot so many times. Dude has a masters in being a hater lol

-6

u/TheBSQ 16h ago

I dislike the whole concept of “beef” & find it disheartening that fans develop weird parasocial relationships regarding the petty grudges of celebrities, often incentivizing those celebrities to use that “beef” as a way to stir up drama & engagement.

And in a genre where beefs can spill over to the streets & result in murder, it seems particularly evil to monetize it & use it for marketing.

there’s a ton of YouTube channels dedicated to explaining the various beefs between artists that led to someone getting shot.

It’s murder (or the potential of murder) packaged as a consumer product where people slurp up every new diss track and escalation curious to see how far it gets.

Cuz that’s what people find thrilling about beefs. Will it turn into another boogie vs Tupac? Will another name get added to the long list of artists who have been killed?

Granted, in this case, it’s now a bunch of middle aged men & is kinda silly, so I don’t think it’s gonna lead to anyone getting shot anymore.

But at best, it’s kinda sad that people seem to enjoy encouraging antagonistic behavior  & petty grievances instead of cooperation & reconciliation.

You also see it in dumb shit like real housewives & reality show drama. People love to watch others fight & be angry & petty & mean. Sad.

5

u/toolsoftheincomptnt 15h ago

I agree with your general sentiment, except I never saw “fandoms” invest in hip-hop beef. Everything that happened in the streets, to my recollection, was by the actual participants/friend groups of the dispute.

I think more about Beyhive and Swifties when I think about long-term sociological harm due to fandom.

And I think more about competitive dating shows (The Bachelor franchise all the way down) and apps in terms of normalizing behavior that is self-degrading and numbs us to the compassion towards others, not to mention the dangers of emotional and psychological manipulation. We shouldn’t normalize shopping for human affection like they’re hoodies on Amazon. And it shouldn’t be entertaining to watch people compete with each other for someone’s attention and affection. That’s not how real connections are made.

Lots of things bother me as much as rap beef bothers you, but maybe I just don’t know enough about it…

-1

u/abakedapplepie 15h ago

except I never saw “fandoms” invest in hip-hop beef

I'm guessing your eyes just stopped working when Kendrick dropped Not Like Us, and during the long beef between Kendrick and Drake that lead up to it, and thats just one example

-1

u/potatoslime 16h ago

hey, there's this concept called heel. look it up.

0

u/IllMathematician8994 16h ago

That’s his point, we shouldn’t be encouraging that behavior

1

u/D3wnis 18h ago

50 cent filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

"A case filed under chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code is frequently referred to as a "reorganization" bankruptcy. Usually, the debtor remains “in possession,” has the powers and duties of a trustee, may continue to operate its business, and may, with court approval, borrow new money. A plan of reorganization is proposed, creditors whose rights are affected may vote on the plan, and the plan may be confirmed by the court if it gets the required votes and satisfies certain legal requirements."

-12

u/Critical-Belt342 18h ago

Yea and courts said hell naw bruh you gotta pay up lol

43

u/AloyDarkshine 20h ago

He trademarked it so she wouldn’t earn money but he would. Only he benifited from this encounter. Basically forced her to pay

6

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm 11h ago

Learn what trademark is please.

She will make money off of this song.

She just cant use its trademark. She cant sell merch with "i aint got it" on it.

Thats basically it. He started selling that merch.

He bought a website, something like "iaintgotit.com"

And that redirects to the g unit website.

She will still make money from the song.

US Trademark doesn't allow trademarking for an arbitrary sentence, also a website for a song? That's just made up.

152

u/Occidentally20 20h ago edited 20h ago

His trademark for the phrase "I ain't got it" covers commercial classes 025, 018 and 009 which include accessories, phone cases, hats, t-shirts and hoodies.

Nobody can own the phrase obviously, but they can own the rights to using that phrase for merchandise, which this lady was trying to do. Now only his company can sell such merchandise.

You can see the trademark itself by searching for Curtis Jackson on https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/search/search-information

iaintgotit.com still redirects to his G-Unit website.

36

u/Count_de_Ville 19h ago

Looks to me that it has met the minimum requirement for an application for trademarking to be filed, but the application has not yet been seen by an examiner. I would assume that means there is no enforceable trademark at this time.

7

u/OrneryLlama 14h ago

I believe trademarks are first-to-use. From what I've seen about this, she never sold any merch, just the song itself. 50 cent was first to use the phrase on merch, which would make it his. The registration doesn't necessarily need to be approved for him to assume its valid.

1

u/Equivalent_Sun3816 16h ago

Can't she just change the name of the song?

5

u/Occidentally20 15h ago

Yep.

But I can't imagine that would be worth it after writing, producing and releasing the song which has "I ain't got it" in the lyrics 21 times in a row and then setting up a merch shop which has the words on all the products.

1

u/Triquetrums 15h ago

Just call it you ain't got it instead. Because he surely doesn't.

5

u/Googleitgenius 20h ago

Yep, a 2 sec goog "The Rogers Test: The law protects creative expression. As long as a song title has artistic relevance to the song and doesn't explicitly mislead people into thinking 50 Cent sponsored or created her music, she is legally allowed to name her song whatever she wants."

0

u/Novel_Pipe_9050 20h ago

It's such a common phrase, they surely can not allow thag to be trademarked!

2

u/UISystemError 20h ago

Didn’t Paris Hilton trademark “That’s hot” during her early years?

1

u/joetheplumberman 20h ago

And Taylor swift did a few and even a color

0

u/p2eminister 16h ago

So two reasons why that worked when it won't here:

  1. Paris is actually the one who said "that's hot" as her catchphrase

  2. She only got the trademark for clothing and accessories, so you couldn't make a bag with "Thats hot" and nothing else on the side of it, because honestly if you did that, you probably were referencing her anyway

1

u/NoConsideration6320 20h ago

??? Wrong guesss you were not on youtube back when the finebros trademarked the word “react” and were getting people takendown and sued for the word react

5

u/iiko_56 20h ago

And they fought tooth and nail, if all content creators didn't protest so early on, they would probably make it an actual thing, and youtube would be dead, makes you think huh

22

u/CrissCrossAppleSos 19h ago

She could still make money off of the song. I’m lost as to what he thought he was doing here

6

u/Serennna 15h ago

23

u/Critical-Belt342 18h ago

This is stupid. Best he did was get the website which she wasn't considering anyways.

Can Not trademark the phrase "I ain't got it"

He trademarked "I ain't got it 50" so if she wanted to she could still use her song title for any merch she wants

Y'all weird glazing this dude that keep posting revenge prn of women that wouldn't let him hit

3

u/Impressive-Metal-405 18h ago

While this is hilarious and I’m not really tripping on that part

How can he trademark the phrase “I ain’t got it” if he doesn’t have a financial use case associated with the term? Now nobody at all can use the term if there is a financial gain associated with it? Wow.

3

u/DaRealGladi8r 16h ago

I checked, they trademarked "she ain't got it"

3

u/DaRealGladi8r 16h ago

G-UNIT brands owns it.

That being said, I don't think she was gonna launch a clothing brand or something like that.

3

u/PrometheusMMIV 16h ago

I didn't think you could trademark common phrases.

3

2

u/Front-Cabinet5521 20h ago

I'm confused. Does she owe 50 cents or 30k?

2

u/Sea-Magician4907 19h ago

As a non-lawyer, how can anyone "trademark a phrase"? So if I trademark "Good morning", no artist will be able to use it in a song without paying me?

1

u/Ok_Conflict1835 15h ago

Not a lawyer. You would have to make money off of it in order for it to hold up as a trade marked phrase.  He released merch so that lets him trade mark it

2

u/Theofino161 19h ago

Can you deny someone the right to use it by trademarking it after the other person created it? If I trademark "im pickle rick" can I stop rick&Morty to ever show that episode ever again?

2

u/Then_Sir7372 19h ago

this dude be out here beefing with everybody else

2

u/nemesit 18h ago

funny but it shouldn't be possible to trademark things that aren't your own, same for domains, all those resellers need to disappear from the face of the planet

Bro really sad "I ain't got it” and then made sure she couldn't get it either 😭

1

u/ThisIsNotTokyo 19h ago

How do you trademark a phrase

1

u/DigitalScrap 19h ago

There are SO many trademarked phrases. It gets absolutely ridiculous, but this is a thing legally.

Emeril Lagasse was able to trademark "Bam!" believe it or not.

"You cannot be serious" is trademarked by John McEnroe.

1

u/MAGAHATESTHEUSA 19h ago
