"Vote with your wallet" and other liberal arguments that need addressing
With the announcement of the price increase on nintendo games which has been very sad news for many of us, it's been frustrating to see liberal arguments that shift the blame on consumers posted on this sub.
I am a random idiot that doesn't really understand economics or speak english but i'll try my best to come across and explain to some of you all, because it seems capitalist ideology has collectively fried our brains to the point where people that actively seek to join an anti-capitalist sub to discuss games genuinely believe they can individually affect the market by consuming. I'm gonna start with the liberal theory, then go to a more marxist critique i guess. I feel a bit bad doing this because i am not qualified for the former or the later, but i feel like people don't realize the implications of what they are saying so it's worth putting out the very basics and apply some criticism to common gamer arguments.
Free market according to liberals:
According to liberal economics, the free market is a decentralized, democratic mechanism where quantities and prices of goods produced reflect the needs of society, through the interaction of the laws of supply and demand. What this means is, producers set a price and consumers make a choice according to their subjective preferences, which in turn causes producers to raise or lower the price. So in the case of Nintendo, Miyamoto says games will cost 80 dollars and it's up to the consumers to determine if this price is justified by "voting with their wallets".
If enough people don't buy, Miyamoto will respond by lowering the price. And if the price doesn’t change, this means that the price accurately reflects how the people value nintendo games, and also that the outcome is efficient, which means basically that no resouces are wasted and we have the ideal combination of quanity and price, where incidentally needs are met in the best possible way. You could go ahead and force nintendo to sell their games cheaper via some kind of gamer law for example, but according to liberal economics this would ruin the whole thing and people's needs wouldn't actually be met, instead nintendo would make less games because they'd have less incentive to make them and we'd all get less as a result.
Free market according to people that don't believe in invisible hands:
Ok so how it actually works is, there are literally three corporations in the console market. They set the price that they think will bring them more profit between them,. They don't even have to talk to each other and decide (it's supposed to be illegal) because it's an oligopoly where price hikes are matched and price cuts are ignored. But also of course they talk to each other.
Now because it's an oligopoly, it's not like there are many choices from the consumer side. If you have some money for entertainment and want to get into console gaming, you can get a playstation or an xbox or a nintendo. Now games will cost 70 to 80 dollars. The question is, can you afford games? If you can and you want to play new games, you are not going to be happy about the new prices but you are gonna pay because you don't really have a choice other than abstaining, which on an individual level also doesn't do anything. If you can't afford the new prices, and i'm genuinely sorry to say, you won't get the new games and there's nothing you can do about it on an individual level. Other, richer people will and you won't. For many people that can afford it to a degree, they will just buy less games.
"ok ok so i am not buying/ i am buying less but by doing so i have voted with my wallet so i have the power to affect prices", nope. Nintendo doesn't care about whether the needs of the people that can't afford games are met, as long as they'll make money from people that can afford it. Which they most likely can do because it's an oligopoly. People that buy Nintendo games will buy the next Nintendo system and mario kart, people that buy playstation will buy playstation 5 and horizon or whatever. They will not be happy about the changes, they will not have consented to anything and more importantly they will not be the ones to blame. If i had the money i'd go out and get a ps5 right now, and so would everyone else.
More broadly, prices aren't really set according to demand but by the logic of capital accumulation and profit maximization. Nintendo makes more and more money and uses the money to make more and more money, until one day the whole thing crashes. That's the very basic marxist idea.
Now liberals will tell you that, yeah, some of what i said is true and that nintendo does have the power to get away with a lot of things as a result of their position, but that's because the competition isn't working effectively. So the idea is, there should have been many options for us that do give us power to affect prices to our liking but distortions in the market have created an oligopoly, probably unironically the state is to blame and more deregulation will solve it, like firing people more easily for example or lowering minimum wage.
However, like the bearded man from assasin's creed syndicate predicted, every meaningful market is becoming more and more oligopolistic under capitalism and that's by design. Bigger corporations are allowed to produce cheaper because of scale economies, smaller ones can't compete with them and gradually we have a few very powerful corporations controlling every key market. From tech and gaming to food, media, and healthcare, a small number of giant corporations increasingly dominate each sector. Capitalist competition doesn’t lead to permanent diversity of choices, it leads to concentration of power.
The free market is a tool for the accumulation of wealth and gradually creates more and more inequality. Elon Musk is going to become a TRILLIONAIRE. Can you grasp what i am saying? This is going to happen. And that's how capitalism works. And is this viable you say? No it's not. Capitalism crashes every few years, again like the Kirby antagonist said it would. The Nintendos of the world eventually make more stuff than people will buy, then people don't buy them, then they fire everyone, then no one buys anything and it's a crisis and the states give money to the banks to save capitalism. This has happened before and it will happen again and in the meantime those of us that can afford to game after work will and those that can't won't. And most people won't.
That's the basic idea, please feel free to add any additions or corrections. And please don't blame eachother on the sub. It's not on the consumers that nintendo is able to get away with this, it's a systemic problem that extends to every aspect of our life.
And by the way, i don't have time to write anymore but the inflation argument is also corporate propaganda. Briefly, there are two kinds of inflation, cost push inflation and demand pull inflation. Nintendo here is claiming cost push inflation: because of, for example, US tariffs, they have higher costs and so to cover them they need to raise prices. But Nintendo and every Nintendo is out there making record profits. So rather than thinking of poor Nintendo that won't be able to make even more profits, consider that it is Nintendo that could take a hit from the tariffs rather than the consumer. They could make less and prices could stay the same and Timmy would get Donkey Kong for Christmas. But that's not what's going to happen. Alright i'm done.

[OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSION THREAD]
As previously requested, we're trying out a regular, automated discussion thread! Use this space to talk about things that don't fit the ordinary subject matter of the space, or for discussions that don't necessitate a full post! All rules besides the relevancy rule still apply!
For these first ones, please let us know what you think about it! Personally, I'm not sure how popular this practice will be, so I don't really know about the frequency at which they should be generated, so we're just gonna feel it out and figure it out, together. Any suggestions about how to run it, moving forward, are welcome!

Game Discussion Friendly reminder. If you consider yourself socialist-communist-anarchist, you shouldn’t give a dime to Rockstar
Rockstar’s been involved in union busting and severe crunch of employees. Also, worsening the circumstances for costumers. Paywalling content and a fucking paywall of their trailer (technically paying to see an add).
I think that piracy should be the only way any of us should play this title, cuz I know I don’t wanna throw my money at no union busting evil corpo mfs.

Kingdom Come Deliverance: How is the author such a ring wing weirdo yet the game is woke as shit?
I have just started a playthrough of KCD1 and after spending about 10 hours of henry i decided to play through a womans lot.
Wow, what a story. I loved it, gameplay wise it was okay but the story is such an excellent example of games as a medium for storytelling, you really feel for Theresa and her role as a woman in medieval society; it sucks!
She does the most of the chores around the house, she is forcefully married off, all her friends are equally as boy obsessed, and all this girl wants is for someone to actually listen to her and see what she wants.
Henry is representative of that, there is the obvious “She likes him” but i think it goes much deeper than that: She wants to be Henry. I think its inferred pretty heavily throughout that Theresa doesnt want to stay in the village and wants to adventure but unlike henry who is held down by his morality and duty to his parents by CHOICE, Theresa is FORCED to stay. A dove with her wings clipped, and what happens when Skalitz is attacked? She is nearly raped, and only is saved by a man who represents the adventurous ideals of what she wants to live by. To be more meta in terms of themes, her role as a woman is a role she doesnt want and when she is about to suffer a uniquely violent and awful crime against her, she is saved by a man that represents her ideals of freedom and adventure.
Only after does she finally break the rules, she starts attacking, she starts fighting back against the invaders.
The story goes on. But my point of all this is:
This shit woke as fuck.
Even when you’re playing as Henry, talking to Sir Divish’s wife she talks about being married off and being attached to a man, the games realistic interpretation of a medieval society means it is showing just how misogynistic and awful it was for women (and anyone of the lower classes).
And whilst I havent played it, the second game features both a black character and a very well fleshed out gay romance?
It seems to me that the writers and creators are highly interested in showing the beauty and the horrors of living in this medieval world, the good and the very very bad.
So, why is it that the creative director is a pro ai, gamergate loser who bitches about feminism and forced diversity on twitter? Not to mention following pro trump shit (Like Trump Jr)
How? How can the creative director be someone who is bigoted yet be the creator of something so clearly anti bigotry?
Is it a broken clock situation? Or is is that maybe the creator isnt as right wing as he thinks he is? Or is it that the team of writers put these in and he’s more of a figurehead?

Rant lead writer for kcd2 is anti-woke?
I haven’t played the first one, but I have 200 hours in KCD2, and this game seemed woke as shit. So forgive me if i’m a little confused by the fact that the lead writer is an anti woke guy who participated in gamergate. What the fuck? I loved this game and a lot of other lefties do too and now i’m just disappointed😞 Does anybody know more about this subject then me and can tell me i’m completely wrong? Does he not have as much influence on the story as i thought he did? Was the writers room filled with normal people who snuck acceptance under his nose?

Game Recommendations Left wing games?
Dear all,
I recently stumbled across gameplay trailers for The Defiant and Fourteen Years of Flames, upcoming Chinese games about the Second Sino-Japanese war. It got me ruminating on communist/socialist games and looks set to scratch that COD itch without the glorified imperialism.
It also got me thinking that, outside a few low-fi RPGs like Disco Elysium, Esoteric Ebb, and Citizen Sleeper, I haven’t played many Marxist games (or games that allow you to be Marxist). What are your favourite communist/socialist games? Preference for those that run on steam deck.
Solidarity,
Lou

Question Need help in lore building
Hi, I'm Hass, and this is my first post here.
See, I'm making a lot of world building for both bots and my tabletop game. And I have a faction that I need help with.
Quick explanation, the lore of the world I'm making is a German victory in WWII leading to a nuclear war, and the far aftermath of it.
There's this faction, the "North Cult", that is a mix of Soviet and Canadian culture. My question is, how could I mix their religious beliefs in nature, ice and winter with socialist ideals?

Rant Friendly reminder, buy whatever videogame you want and yes that includes GTA 6.
The fired Rockstar devs themselves you know the ones suing the company for union busting have said not to boycott GTA 6.Their whole message is to win justice for the people who helped make it and to not punish the people who made it by tanking sales.
If you actually want to help the devs instead of virtue signaling like a neo liberal playing the “let’s vote with our wallet” then the leverage isnt the act of not buying a game it’s to support their unions.
If you really wanted to help the devs you should’ve bought a tshirt from the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain and posted about it way sooner (you know since pre orders are closed now for the t shirts) because the proceeds went straight to the fired workers legal fund. Thats REAL material support instead of a symbolic gesture that costs Rockstar nothing and you just do to make yourself feel good and try to signal that you’re somehow a better socialist.
Edit: I would also like to mention that being a wokescold is hardly productive and just enforces the stereotype that leftists are people who hate fun

colonialism in videogames Neil Druckmann Horseshoe Theory
I used to be a huge Naughty Dog fan until TLOU II. It was weird having such a negative reaction to that game and finding the only criticisms were coming out of unhinged cesspools (literally insert any -phobia). It felt like people had to give it 10/10 to distinguish themselves politically from the mob, which made reviews feel inauthentic.
I actually enjoyed the gameplay mechanics and Abby. But that game felt so soulless and made with such an anemic worldview. I was also extra put off by Druckmann & Gross shielding their egos from criticism in a manner that felt really exploitative of racial/gender minorities.
I don’t care to split hairs about whether or not TLOU contains literal allegories for Israel/Palestine. Both Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross still follow the IDF and various Zi0nist accounts. The word performative gets overused but it’s what keeps coming to mind whenever I hear about their social/political commentary in gaming. The work culture set by their studio is a whole other topic altogether.
Intergalactic will be the first ND game I won’t buy because I feel frankly disgusted at this point. It’s just exhausting trying to find criticisms that are not tied to antisemitism or screeds about the Black, masc-presenting female protagonist. Am I just looking in the wrong places?

Rant GTA 6 fans defending a $100 digital only game
I've seen multiple comments on Instagram, Reddit, and YouTube where people have been actively disregarding any criticism for this game, and justifying an absurd price tag for a digital only game. Rockstar is blatantly price controlling this game so that people won't be able to buy cheaper second hand options. They released two trailers (basically teasers), no gameplay at all before allowing gamers to pre-order, with any other game this would be ridiculous, but Rockstar are Rockstar after all, Rockstar wouldn't ever release a bad game. I think it's clear that Rockstar are using their past good will to make as much money as humanly possible from a game. Rockstar are a union busting company, who practice crunch on their employees, and dismisses equal pay. I don't understand how people can ignore this just because "GTA looks pretty", it's so fucking infuriating.
