Narrator: "they didn't check."

u/Cautious_Type6474 3d ago
Based on the time between the goal and restart safe to say they did not.
Incredible goal though. lol

I was there. The time between the goal and the start was actually pretty long. I’d say they checked it.

u/fritobalik 1d ago
I thought the same thing. They clearly checked during the game. It felt long enough in the stadium. Then I watched the broadcast to see the replay and it felt like no time at all. I suspect it was all the replays as mentioned here.

u/Cautious_Type6474 3d ago
Not to be an ass, legit question here. How much time difference could there possibly be vs AppleTV’s “live” broadcast? I’m sure there is a bit of a delay but I always assumed a handful of seconds…not 1-2 minutes.
23
u/overly_sarcastic24 Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago
Watching on TV they have you sit through multiple replays after the goal.
Being present, there is none of that. You’re sitting there watching people wait around doing nothing. Which you don’t see on the broadcast.
Being there it was very clear that the ref was holding up the restart to check.

u/Cautious_Type6474 3d ago
Ha yes I am aware that following a goal there is a break in play. Believe it or not I’ve been present for live matches and viewing them on television. That, to me, seemed quick on the restart for such a closely disputed goal. Seen longer restarts simply for celebrations.

u/prestieteste NASL Sounders 3d ago
It wasn't a quick restart I watched the ref to the hold motion to the players several times

u/lizardmon Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago
How do you figure, both teams were standing ready to play and Rusnak was holding the ball next to the referee for at lest two minutes. Very clearly waiting for a check.
3
u/Cautious_Type6474 3d ago
The time between goal and reset kickoff was 92 seconds as someone else shared so…
3
u/overly_sarcastic24 Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago
Okay. How long do you think it should take to check? You can go back and watch. The ball went in the net at 81:01, and play resumed 82:33. That’s over a minute and a half. That seems like plenty of time for me.
-8
u/Cautious_Type6474 3d ago
Oh cmon…you know it’s situational and why you’re wanting to argue over this wild to me.
According to a quick search the average post goal reset time in MLS is 60-90 seconds…so yes, I do feel like it should have taken a skosh longer than your average goal to definitively make that call.

MLS's loose offside rulings are frustrating. How is this not clear enough to overturn the call?!
They'll say footage isn't clear enough to overturn the goal when the angle is poor and then we have a decent angle like today and they still say "idk looks like it could be onside, the camera might be letting us down, so let's trust the ref's call."

u/DawmCorleone 2d ago
Tbf this angle is awful. Id like to see lines drawn
4
u/Spirited_Attorney_48 2d ago
There are turf lines. It's beyond obvious. He's like a foot offside.
2
u/DawmCorleone 2d ago
Look i want it to be offside too. Id wager its beyond close. But look at nouhous foot, its really really close

Offsides, just look at the lines on the turf

NouHou's foot keeps him on

u/RuckusVell04 3d ago
I don't think so. Why doesn't MLS have the same tech as the EPL?

Clear as a rainy, foggy night. The line drawn doesn't look parallel with the 6. It looks like it's going out to meet his foot. The line is closer to the 6 at Bob's foot than at Nouhou's. You can see it in the turf as well.

u/PositivePristine7506 Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago

u/VVynn Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago
For a perspective line it shouldn’t actually be parallel. Perspective lines converge at distance so it should be farther apart closer to the camera and tighter as you get farther. Not sure that would make enough of a difference here though.
21
u/overly_sarcastic24 Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago
The fact you guys are arguing it like this just goes to prove that it wasn’t clear and obvious, and the lack of intervention from VAR was the correct call. As much as I hate to say it.
0
u/RuckusVell04 3d ago
What's the point of having VAR then? Replay in the NFL can show you got a first down or touchdown by an inch.
3
u/bobnuthead 3d ago
Clear and obvious errors. In leagues with the super advanced tech, an inch is clear and obvious. MLS is cheap and doesn’t have that, so an offside decision has to be clear and obvious to overturn.

It’s close enough that it probably doesn’t matter in this case, but no way could you draw 100 lines across the field parallel to the 18 and they would all be accurate from the camera’s angle.

Time to revisit vanishing point/perspective correction, Ruckus.
1
u/RuckusVell04 3d ago
I'm retired. That means I don't work any longer. The last time I drew in perspective was in college. Besides, drawing house plans in CAD is not in perspective. If they were using technology, it would not be in a perspective view.

That’s scary to hear. Somebody should check your CAD work. Maybe you work in 2d, but this is an image of a 3d subject. So, it is in perspective (with a vanishing point and non-parallel lines).
-3
u/RuckusVell04 3d ago edited 3d ago
Parallel line to the 6. How this would be viewed with technology is not in perspective. You can see the line drawn is closer to the 18 on Bob's foot than on the other side of the 18 box. The gap is larger. You don't need to concern yourself with my CAD work either, it is all officially checked and confirmed.

This is why
MessiMLS needs to pony up and purchase us that new age SAOT technology!0
u/Quint191 3d ago
The line drawn is clearly biased, but I think it’s very close and too close to overturn without better technology.
2
u/PositivePristine7506 Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago
Biased? As a sounders fan I'm biased to prove a goal went against us?
It is what it is man, KKR lost his mark and let in a goal from a world class player, shit happens.
2
u/SiempreSeattle 2d ago
not to mention having KKR trying to mark a dude who's about a foot taller might be a tactical setup mistake
1
u/Quint191 19h ago edited 19h ago
No, I said the line has a bias, in that it’s clearly not quite parallel with the penalty area line thats painted on the field. I said nothing about you being biased.. triggered much? Also, I said it was very close and too close to overturn, so no need for whatever you’re trying to project in my comment.
1
u/PositivePristine7506 Seattle Sounders FC 10h ago
Triggered? Jesus christ my man, its literally a line I copied from the goal line. What is this 2016? fucking grow up and draw the line yourself if you don't believe me.

Clearly offside
VAR was AWOL all game.
Nothing for Elliot lining up Deki and hitting him directly in the back of the head with his forearm.
Nothing for Elliot committing clear handball in the area.
Nothing for Lewandowski after he pops Kee Hee in the face.
What the fk is VAR for, anyways?

u/Matt_McT 3d ago edited 3d ago
That goal by Lewa is too valuable for the league for it to get overturned if it's this close. That's going to do numbers of the league's socials.

u/Comfortable-Habit242 3d ago
I think it was a bad call on the field but I don’t think VAR could conclude it’s offside.
Where’s Lewandowski’s foot relative to Nouhou’s? Where’s Kim’s foot?

From the one angle they showed it’s impossible to confirm considering we’re talking inches. I don’t necessarily think this is a MLS conspiracy to gain viewership…but it is wild a goal scoring play is this close yet the “review” was shorter than my average piss.
1
u/bobnuthead 3d ago
The review entails the VAR and AVAR looking at the image and asking “is he clearly offside?”
Based on the debate here, I think in about a minute they could check this angle, find the point of contact, and conclude that while it’s possible the attacker is offside, there is not clear and obvious proof. They’re not drawing lines, nor do they need conclusive and incontrovertible evidence of a good goal. Just the lack of clear and obvious evidence to overturn the on-field decision.

u/Apprehensive-Cap1388 3d ago

Yes huh they put listening devices in the balls now to spy on players sweet nothings and post game plans

u/Disastrous-Act-5129 3d ago
If only there was some sort of automated offside-detecting technology that MLS could invest in. You know, something that would be quicker, more accurate, and reenforce the league's commitment to the integrity of the game.
Alas.

I’m bad at spotting offsides on the fly. Yet, even I caught the offsides in real time. Thomas saved us the defeat, but this VAR would have helped FFS

It’s not impossible that another angle would prove he’s on but I’d really need to see it to change my opinion that Chicago got away with one here.

The attacker looks like they are perfectly even with Nouhou and the linesman is in the best possible position. It’s hard for me to get too upset about this one.

30 seconds to skim this 3 day old thread, formulate a condescending response, take a screenshot, rotate/crop said screenshot, type lame response and post?

I would wager that would be offside if MLS used the automated technology.
