A large vertical spinning cylinder of swirling air and dust. The image is strongly enhanced for contrast. The top is a differential from the mean image stack, where the bottom is that boosted differential added back over the mean stack.

Saturn with spokes & moons, August 28th

Some periods of very good seeing as the lunar eclipse was getting underway. Again, multiple spokes were seen in the B-ring. Some of Saturn's moons were also grouped alongside the planet.

Interestingly, the Cassini division now appears darker in front of the planet - a change from recent months. This is a result of the changing Sun/Earth illumination angle.

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Launch

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope rises to space atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026. The milestone begins the observatory’s journey to explore the large‑scale structure of the universe.

Roman will investigate dark energy and dark matter, conduct a statistical census of planetary systems, and enable a broad range of additional astrophysics research. Liftoff occurred at 7:26 a.m. EDT, from Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39A.

The DJI Osmo Action 6 launched aboard a rocket — riding from ignition high above the atmosphere, then back down to a precise vertical landing.

One continuous first-person view. From liftoff to touchdown. Every frame, captured.

A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket transits the Sun. The hot gasses from the liquid-fuelled boosters create complex refraction patterns that distort sunlight at lower left. Shockwaves from the rocket's 27 engines emanate in arcs that break up the Sun's outline.

The camera follows the path of the Juno Spacecraft as it approaches over the north pole, comes low over equatorial latitudes, and departs beyond the south pole. The viewer is shown turbulent clouds, wide bands, and massive storms. The Great Red Spot appears south of the equator. The video tracks faster than actual time.

Ground that has a lot of water ice mixed with dirt tends to crack in polygonal patterns bounded by short straight channels. In the South Polar region of Mars this type of terrain may be covered by a seasonal polar cap composed of dry ice.

In the spring as the seasonal cap sublimates gas is trapped underneath the seasonal ice layer until it can escape to an opening. At this site, faint rectangular channels in the surface are visible. The escaping carbon dioxide gas has exploited these channels and in the process, deepened them and added sinuosity to the formerly straight segments.

This interesting site was identified by citizen scientists at Planetfour: Terrains.
