A large vertical spinning cylinder of swirling air and dust. The image is strongly enhanced for contrast. The top is a differential from the mean image stack, where the bottom is that boosted differential added back over the mean stack.

Amateur/Processed The North American Nebula

Post image

Processed using the Hubble HSO palette in PixInsight.

The North America Nebula (cataloged as NGC 7000) is a large emission nebula located approximately 2,200 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus, near the bright star Deneb. Spanning roughly 90 light-years across, its striking shape—which remarkably resembles the continent of North America, complete with a prominent dark "Gulf of Mexico"—is caused by glowing, ionized hydrogen gas energized by intense ultraviolet radiation from massive nearby stars

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Launch

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope rises to space atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026. The milestone begins the observatory’s journey to explore the large‑scale structure of the universe.

Roman will investigate dark energy and dark matter, conduct a statistical census of planetary systems, and enable a broad range of additional astrophysics research. Liftoff occurred at 7:26 a.m. EDT, from Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39A.

Pro/Processed A Deep Look at Andromeda Galaxy's Core in LRGB+Ha

Post image
261 Upvotes

From OP's description:

For a while now, I’ve wanted to do a deep image on Andromeda’s core with an emphasis on the hydrogen alpha. For the last month or so, I’ve been pointing my telescope at Andromeda to do just that. After deleting subs, I ended up with 110 hours and 36 minutes of subs that were stacked in Pixinsight where I did some of the basic editing and the continuum subtraction (third image).

The images were blended together using various masked layers in Photoshop, a process I had to figure out with trial and error. Simply screening the Ha in does not work on the core as the LRGB is far too bright. To keep noise to a minimum, I created a super luminance frame and did not run NoiseXterminator until after the continuum subtraction.

Total integration: 110h 36m

Integration per filter:

- Lum/Clear: 24h 21m (487 × 180")

- R: 10h 30m (126 × 300")

- G: 10h 5m (121 × 300")

- B: 10h 20m (124 × 300")

- Hα: 55h 20m (332 × 600")

Equipment:

- Telescope: Celestron EdgeHD 9.25" with .7 reducer

- Camera: ZWO ASI2600MM Pro

- Mount: ZWO AM5N

- Filters: Antlia 3nm Narrowband H-alpha 36 mm and V-Pro LRGB

Source, iSpeakAmurican

.

.

LRGB+Ha is a technique in astrophotography whereby hydrogen-alpha (H-alpha) data is added to a standard LRGB colour image (Luminance, Red, Green, Blue) to highlight red nebulae and star-forming regions in galaxies or nebulae.

Amateur/Processed Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) and the surrounding dark nebula

Post image
35 Upvotes

My latest image of the Cocoon Nebula, IC 5146, surrounded by the huge amount of dark interstellar dust running through this part of Cygnus.

I wanted to capture more than just the bright Cocoon itself, so the processing was aimed at bringing out the much fainter dusty structure and dark nebula surrounding it while still retaining the dense background star field.

Equipment

• Askar 107PHQ + 0.7× reducer (~524mm, f/4.9)

• ZWO ASI2600 Duo

• Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro

• Optolong L-eNhance

• UV/IR-cut filter

• PHD2 guiding

Light frames

• UV/IR: 29 × 120s = 58 minutes

• L-eNhance: 46 × 240s = 3h 04m

• Total light integration: 4h 02m

Calibration

• 30 × 120s darks for the UV/IR data

• 30 × 240s darks for the L-eNhance data

• 50 flats per filter

• 50 dark-flats per filter

The UV/IR and L-eNhance data were calibrated and stacked separately. The broadband UV/IR data provided most of the natural star field and faint dusty structure, while the L-eNhance data was used to strengthen the Hα/OIII emission from the Cocoon.

Processing involved gradient/background correction, noise reduction, separate star and starless processing, stretching and then combining the two filter datasets. A fair bit of care was needed with the stretch because pushing the background too far very quickly makes the faint dust overly contrasty.

The part I particularly like is the dark nebula itself. The Cocoon is obviously the bright centrepiece, but once the surrounding dust starts appearing you realise just how much structure there is across the entire field.

IC 5146 – Cocoon Nebula, Cygnus

Total integration: 4h 02m
