I wanted to share my latest spoon, carved from an apple branch from a friend's property.

Because I followed the natural sweep of the branch, it turned out quite a bit curvier than your average spoon. It looks a little awkward in its natural surrounding—scooping up porridge and cereals—but it is surprisingly comfortable to use.

This was easily my hardest carve to date. I really struggled with the reversing grain and crumbly texture of the wood...I kept slicing away at it to clean up my mistakes, so the final piece ended up a good deal thinner than I originally intended. Also, when I axed out the blank, I suffered a massive bit of tear-out at the end of the handle. To save it, I ended up carving out a little dimple there, which turned out to be a fantastic resting spot for the thumb!

Third spiral spoon. Some reason this spiral was challenging. Wasn’t exactly what I envisioned but didn’t turn out bad. I love how cherry darkens though with time.

I am looking to upgrade my Mora hook knife, and I’d like to be able to use the tool in bowl carving as well.

Has anyone used this tool before? Would it be usable on spoons?

It has a little indent in the handle, as I am wont to do.

It's about 9cm (3 ½ inches) long, carved from a type of cherry. I have about 2 years carving experience. In the beginning, I sought guidance from YouTube videos and blogs, but most of my learning is just trial an error. I think this turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself.

I made another one! I liked the first spoon I made, so I thought I’d do a more visually interesting one. This one’s made of northern silky oak (another Australian timber), and this video’s after the first coat of tung oil.

I shaped this one largely with knives, rasps and a spokeshave, after roughing out the blank on a bandsaw.

Super soft and creamy whittle

I posted the first stages of this bowl and some people were interested in seeing the final project. Initially, the rim was flat and even, but a piece chipped off when I was almost finished (so disappointing!). I decided to lean into the look and try to give it the appearance of broken pottery. I think I like it.

I got this hunk of cherry. I'm trying to ladle this bad boy up. This will be my 2nd ladle attempt after my first one failed.

My dad's neighbour was kind enough to hack the basic shape with a chainsaw.

Now I'm out here axing this thing trying to chew off the wood and it's taking forever. Mainly because I'm hitting some tough spots.

I'm not looking forward to hollowing out the bowl either.

How are you all doing this? I'm getting frustrated because the last few spoons I had knots, cracks and splits and I had to ditch it.

It feels like for every 3 attempts, I get one successful spoon out of it.

I'm not new, I been carving for the past couple of years but I'm hitting some bad luck. Last 2 picture is what I batched out in the past three months but that doesn't include the ones that didn't make the cut.

Sometimes I cheat and I use my table saw to help cut and sometimes it's struggling to run through those knots. Even I used my reciprocating saw and jig saw. I use the jig saw to help me cut the outline when I come across a tough spot, because I know if I axe, it can veer off.

Does anyone ever feel this way?

My first ever spoons, carved as a Christmas gift for my partner. Mostly done with a dremel.

I do, and my parents still have it. Thought it would be a nice challenge to try and recreate it. I am thrilled with the outcome! It's more inspired by, than an exact recreation, but pretty close!

I don't have a hook knife, and im struggling with my spoons to carve the bowl. Currently i just sand them down with 40 grit paper but it takes several hours.

I attempted with a whistling knife but its too angular for the smooth bowl.

Advice welcome

Got frustrated with another project and decided to have a go at carving a wooden spoon with an Australian cypress fence picket offcut. Just put the first coat of tung oil on. Turned out OK, I think!

A few days ago I posted my best spoon yet. It's crazy to me the difference a couple of days practicing made. Meet my new best spoon yet. Hopefully soon to lose the title also.

Yes, so made from oak. The inlays are beech and african blackwood (Yes, I know they're not centered, I just eyeballed the holes, for some reason). And before you say it, yes I regret doing kolrosing. It A) didn't turn out clean this time (Very very difficult to kolrose seasoned dense timber, crazy right? Who could have forseen that?) and B) makes it too messy. I should have left the wonderful wood alone. The strap is reindeer leather.

The spoon took 5.5 hours, I ought to have let it take 10 and ended up with a far nicer spoon - but I think not bad for a after-work-work-the-next-day project! In that light, I'm happy with it!

This is a big cooking spoon, that I carved from a piece of ash. The top of the handle features a natural split surface. As ash has really big pores I decided to lacquer the spoon with 5 coats of urushi. It makes it also easier to clean.
