Have a problem

Every time I go to the store I get $20 cash back to fund my gambling habit and hide it from my wife. Everything was fine until the new guy at her work told her our daughter’s name probably wasn’t inspired by my year abroad in France. Not sure why he had to bring sweet little Parlay into it. Hope he doesn’t know about my son, Vig.

I don't hate the punchline, but I feel like there's a little too much setup with a lot of details that feel like they go nowhere. The whole thing about the $20 cash back strategy doesn't really contribute anything, nor does the reveal coming from a new coworker of your wife's

I think the gambling terms are too niche for people to get it.

But they would also understand what you're getting at without even knowing those terms, which in turn means it wasn't really surprising enough: you know the punchline is going to be gambling terms, whether you know them or not.

I like the underlying joke about naming your kids after a secret addiction, and I wonder if you could find a couple of different ones that still sound like they could be names, in the context of a different secret.

Worth a shot!

For some reason I think Vigtor is a funnier name than just Vig.

It's sort of the same joke as that old meme about naming the kids after where they were conceived.

Also the character in this joke doesn't have a secret gambling habit. The character has a deep love of gambling that led him to naming his kids after it.

That's the real set up.

"I have a deep obsession with gambling that my wife can never know about..."
