Some thoughts...

1. We know at least one nuTrek writer has said they were instructed to make their script simpler.

2. Over the past five years, we've had several people in the industry talking about streaming studios instructing writers/directors to treat their art as Second Screen Content, which is content for audiences distracted by phones or other screens.

3. We also know that studios now have access to mountains of viewer data, and that this data is telling them that a significant chunk of the audience cannot follow things, or does not notice things (particularly metaphors, themes, symbolism etc), and so certain types of "writing depth" is either wasted on the audience, or confuses the audience.

4. We also know that the 65+ age bracket is the fastest growing demographic when it comes to paying for streaming subscriptions (due perhaps to their disposable incomes), and that 57% of adults aged 65 to 75 now pay for one or more streamers.

5. We also know that people tend to start experiencing cognitive decline in their 60s, and that there is a decline in reading for pleasure (never mind reading science fiction), which is linked to a decline in cognitive flexibility/speed.

6. We know streaming networks capture vast behavioural/demographic metrics. They know your income, education levels, viewing duration, preferred genres, lifestyle values, what you binge, skip, abandon, your geographical location etc etc. All of this goes into the creation of a psychographic profile (but is it accurate?), and all this gets sent to TV producers.

7. It seems likely, therefore, that networks and studios would instruct writers to simplify their scripts, and heavy-handedly spell things out for the audience (or hire writers/producers who epitomize such low quality in the first place). We can see this with many other shows: every point, motivation and emotional shift is explained in the most heavy-handed way possible. Nothing is left unsaid or is handled with nuance.

8. So I wouldn't be surprised if Paramount has marketing data on nuTrek that advises them to paradoxically target old people and post-literate or hipster young people, with the data telling them that the only big overlap between both groups is literal pakleds.

And that’s exactly why Carol Freeman is the greatest captain in Star Trek history. Commanding the USS Cerritos on Lower Decks, Freeman had to deal with the least glamorous missions. The biggest threats that her crew faced involved cast-offs from other shows, the hapless Pakleds or embittered Nicholas Locarno. But those low stakes just meant that Captain Freeman could spend time delegating tasks, guiding her crew, and doing the work of the United Federation of Planets… you know, the stuff Starfleet captains are actually supposed to be doing. And she did it better than anyone else. [...]

While modern viewers, well aware of the injustice and bureaucratic blocks that exist in our current system, understand Mariner’s motivations, we also have to remember that Star Trek takes place in a utopian future. Things have gotten much better by the 24th century, and institutions like Starfleet and the Federation are beacons of civilization, not oppressive forces that require resistance. For that reason, the most heroic thing that a captain can do is to just do her job.

Which is exactly what Carol Freeman does. Throughout the five seasons of Lower Decks, she receives her orders and completes them admirably. She doesn’t always like the job handed to her, nor does she always do them with great magnanimity. Take the mission she’s given to negotiate peace with the Pakleds earlier in season 2. Freeman gets the job because she dealt with the aliens in season 1, but she takes it mostly because she hopes that pulling off the assignment will get her a promotion to a better ship. She doesn’t go about it by following her instincts, like Kirk, or by giving some grand speech, like Picard. She goes about it like a regular human, completing the task given to her. [...]

One might point to Freeman’s career-building approach to negotiating peace with the Pakleds or her getting duped by the Clicket as signs of weakness. Surely, Kirk would never allow himself to be tricked in such a way, nor would Picard treat the job so callously. But that’s because Kirk, Picard, and most of the other captains put their own ambitions and feelings and aspirations over the job itself. They were too busy valorizing the duties of Starfleet Officers or holding grudges against Klingons or talking to wormhole gods or doing whatever the heck Janeway wanted to do to think about the job itself.

But not Carol Freeman. Captain Freeman does the job, because she believes in the job. And that’s the entire point of Star Trek. Star Trek takes place in a world where humanity has matured and created institutions that better their conditions. As much as other captains say they believe those institutions, too many of their stories are about them defying those institutions and their rules (what’s the Prime Directive again?). The way those guys talk, no one should be surprised when admirals advocate for space genocide on a regular basis.

By doing her job well, but not spectacularly, by following orders, even if that means getting it wrong from time to time, Captain Freeman reveals faith in Starfleet and, by extension, faith in the future. More than any other captain, she shows that humanity can actually improve and that we can move out of our infancy, no longer acting like egoistic little adolescents who steal ships and fly them into black holes, but like people who have a job to do and do it for the good of everyone."

I've tested it using PPSSPP on my PC and my Phone, but I have not tested it on an actual PSP, so if anyone tries it, let me know how it plays.

There is a chance I might need to release a version that downsizes the textures of the ships, as the ones included in this package might be hitting the upper limit of what the PSP can handle.

This game plays great on phones with only a touchscreen, good for getting in some Trek Gaming On The Go.

I understand the former Bajon government officials were exiled. But nobody talks about their role, including Secretary Kubus.

Remember, the Cardassian government was there at the invitation of the Bajoran government at the time. The Bajoran government were run by corrupt officials who used the Cardassians as their muscle to retain power, while subjugating their people to slave labor to benefit the Cardassians in return.

Remember Dukat, who is painted as the ultimate villain, actually abolished child labor. He reduced workloads in half. And increased food rations. He also did not have the power to send anyone to a labor camp that resided with men like Secretary Kubus.

I understand Dukat got painted as the villain of the show, but it’s disgusting that people engage in revisionist history. They make Dukat out to be like Hitler, but don’t even mention men like Secretary Kubus.

If anything Dukat protected the Bajoran from people like Kubus. He did not make policy. It was his job to enforce it, and he enforced it in the most merciful way he could. Men like Kubas are the real villains of the “occupation”.
