Hardware Mod Valve, there was a very simple solution for this, just saying...

Ultra thin velcro, 3 stripes, mirrored to the battery. MUCH easier to take off and replace than the semi-permanent adhesive they used 🫠 Had to throw away a perfectly fine battery but trying out the upgraded LCD battery so hopefully it would be worth it.

Currently doing an all around mod to my steam deck, will keep y'all posted! 🙏🏼

The Noir Tokon build. IYKYK lol

I am pretty happy with this #marveltokon build. I think there are a few things to still improve on here but I like it. Still primarily focusing on steam deck docking stations. What should the next build be?

Hardware Mod Steam Deck 360

As soon as I got my steam deck I knew I needed to personalize it. The vanilla deck is beautiful but I wanted to add some flavor.
The Xbox 360 is the console I grew up with and I’ve always thought it had the best controllers. I saw some other people complete this mod and decided to tackle it.
Super fun, lots of trial and error if you don’t own a 3d printer but nothing you can overcome with patience and cash lol
My only issue is that the Extremerate button kits are all painted white plastic, which ticked me off a lot because their other mods for other consoles have been really high quality. So if the paint rubs off I’ll be very upset and will be casting my own buttons.
I sanded the buttons up to 1000 grit and was going to polish them but will probably do that a different day because I didn’t have the supplies to polish properly and the mod already had the Deck apart the entire day.

Hardware question Decksight at new cost, or just get an SD OLED?

I have a 512gb steam deck lcd, and i've had an eye on decksight but never pulled the trigger. Unfortunately, Shadetechnik's site is now out of stock, and crowdsupply has a restock but screens cost 200 dollars instead of 150 it was at before (no idea if his site'll restock, or if its price will jump 50 as well but I would not be shocked if it did).

At that price, I could just sell my 512 lcd and get a 512 oled, and the price difference (based on used sold listings on ebay) is about 200 dollars. Is decksight a slam dunk better choice here than a steamdeck OLED? (knowing about the screen's spec diffs already etc). I tend to play lighter weight games with a smattering of higher end games sometimes mixed in.

Hardware question Steam deck oled tablet ?

Hi everyone!

I'm on a bit of a weird project. I impulsively bought a Steam Deck OLED motherboard for dirt cheap (90 with the fan and heatsink). It was listed as untested, and luckily it works! Now I'm torn between two ideas:

  1. A battery-less Steam Deck mini PC in a 3D-printed case.
  2. A Steam Deck OLED tablet?.

I can get a used battery and screen for around 100, but if I go with the second option, I figured, why not make it even better?

So I'd like to focus on the tablet idea. I already have a 3D-printed case design, so now I'm planning the internals. What battery upgrade would you recommend?

I was thinking about using two batteries in parallel, but that doesn't seem like the best solution. I don't know if anyone has built something like this before, so I'd really appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

I'll probably use Switch-style rail controllers or a phone grip/controller setup.

Thanks!

Hardware question Best Current Option for Battery Replacement?

Looking to replace my LCD's old battery. I guess I waited too long and now the SiWiQU I've seen recommended here is out of stock on Amazon, plus the iFixit replacement has jumped up to nearly double in price.

Any recommendations for an affordable alternative replacement battery? I'm hesitant to go with random alternate recommendations on Amazon. If it comes down to it I can also just wait for the SiWiQU to come back in stock too.

Software question Using chromahon, can not seem to get the QAM to match the style of the others

Hi I'm just wondering if theres a way to quickly make the QAM look like how the steam menu looks out of the box when you enable chromahon. As you can see the steam menu and the context menus are similar, and I tried to match the QAM but honestly I just cannot figure out how, if possible, to make the buttons round. So if theres a quick way to match em that would be cool, or if i can make the buttons round and do it manually I will.

Hardware question Steam Deck having issues after mod

I replaced my analog sticks with elecgear tmr sticks. Swapped the battery to 53wh and installed the clicky button mod. Everything works after having to reseat the flex cables because the right stick wasn't inserted all the way.Issue is that the steam deck is acting like the battery isn't connected.

There's no battery icon and when I press the power button it flashes as if it's empty. It works when i turn it on via charger but there's no percentage or battery info in the command. I have pushed the connector in all the way. can't think what the problem would be. I've also went in and out of battery storage mode a few times to see if that does anything. Right now i have drained the battery and I'll try charging overnight.

EDIT: just playing games and noticed that the fan is way quieter than usual, probably not being provided enough power?

Shell swap Shell swapped steam decks with swapped sticks, painted grills

These are used steam decks I customized. They’ve got clicky kits, Hall effect sticks, soldered colored sticks, painted vents, 2tb ssds in each, and 1-2tb micro sds in each.

The lcd deck has deckHD and a 32gb ram upgrade. But I’m not taking credit for modding that one I just found it online while looking for the other decks.

Bit of a passion project.

The only thing left that I might do when I find my clear carbon fiber film is cover the trackpads because I prefer the grip over both stock and extremerate textures.

Hardware Mod My Ultra-Compact Steam Deck Mod — 5.5" AMOLED, Custom Cooling & 4×18650 Battery Pack

Saw a few posts here discussing similar ideas, which reminded me of this old project, so I figured I’d share it. I’m planning to pick it back up and continue working on it.

I started this project back in 2022–2023, but it ended up being put on hold in the later stages and has been sitting ever since.

The original approach was to reverse-engineer and bypass the ANX7580, break out the internal eDP signal, and use an eDP-to-MIPI bridge to drive the display. Later on, thanks to the open-source BIOS work from the DeckHD project, I found that modifying the eDP panel parameters in the BIOS could also get the screen working. That turned out to be a much cleaner solution.

The goal was to make the whole device as compact as possible. Basically, the original Steam Deck motherboard is the only major part I’m keeping. The controls, battery, and cooling system all need to be custom-made.

Compared with a standard Steam Deck, I removed the left trackpad and the right analog stick.

Specs:

  • Battery: 4×18650 cells, 4×3500mAh
  • Display: 5.5" AMOLED, 1280×720
  • Custom cooling module with two fans — one mainly for the CPU, and the other to help circulate air and cool the internals overall.

Hello everyone , I’ve been working on this Steam Deck Top for the last 2 days, it snaps together like LEGO! You just slide in your portable monitor, 60% keyboard of your choice, your Steam Deck dock, a USB hub, and even a little spot for your portable mouse just for the fun of it.
Let me know what you guys think!
And keep in mind, I have ZERO experience with 3D modeling. I designed the whole thing in Tinkercad!

Hardware Mod need help deciding

I'm thinking about replacing the buttons on my Steam Deck, not the power button or trackpad. Is it difficult or not? My friend, who is an experienced pc builder, is gonna help me with it. Should I go through with it?

Software question Am I Cooked Chat?

So I did the decksight mod as well as a few others while I was in there. But long story short almost everything went according to plan. The left gulikit hall effect joystick lost its locking tab but the joystick still works fine, I don't think that's my problem anyway. So the main issue is that when I go into Desktop mode the screen is sideways and the mouse goes haywire, moves to the edge of the screen and just stays there, every time I try to move it the mouse just goes back to it's corner and when I try to use the left track pad it just rumbles and does nothing. I didn't put the steam deck in battery storage mode before starting the mod either but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Any help would he appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Software Mod Adaptive Frame Generation

Hey folks,

I have been developing new features on-top of existing plugins to allow Adaptive Frame Generation (borrowing from Lossless Scaling as well) on Steam Machine/Deck (basically Linux/Steam OS ecosystem).

I have also been collaborating with many kind gamers to help me testing it and I think we have achieved something that worth trying out:

https://github.com/eugeniosegala/decky-lsfg-vk-experimental/releases/tag/v0.13.0-experimental.21

I personally noticed that the plugin helps with stuttering and unstable frame-rate in general as well (besides increasing FPS).

We all wished that the steam machine could handle 4k 60fps or 1440p 120fps natively but it is what it is.

Test it and let me know, I'm keen to know how you are finding adaptive frame generation, you can set it to 100fps as well if you prefer less ghosting :)

I'm pretty much using it in all my AAA games.

Enjoy!

Finally, here is the much-anticipated teardown of the SteamBoy! Hopefully now it makes sense how it is possible to fit everything in. See the picture captions for details.

Let me know if you have any questions! This will also be my last SteamBoy post for now until I have more progress to show.
