Developer Post I built a anime + manga app with Stremio-style streaming and Nyaa-powered manga volume reading

Theatre: catalogue → source selection → playback.

Inspired by Hayase and Harbor (another Stremio client), I wanted to build a torrent-streaming app myself, with the distinction being that it looked and functioned more like an OS than a normal app.

For the anime/TV/film streaming side of my app, Colosseum is heavily built around Stremio's model. Most of what I personally use Stremio for can be done in Colosseum as well.

Since Harbor was one of my primary influences, I hand-picked a lot of aspects from that app, such as Watch Party and the way its Jikan/MAL catalogue was turned into rows like anime from the 2020s, 2010s, etc.

As for Hayase, there is a pretty major feature they have that my app doesn't: automatically picking the best torrent source/stream. Right now Colosseum still makes you choose the source yourself. I will implement something similar soon.

Something my app does particularly well in terms of anime, film and TV is downloads.

My download system is pretty advanced. I have built-in libtorrent support to download episodes, entire seasons and movies. I also have a dedicated Downloads page for tracking all your downloads.

Built-in libtorrent downloads for episodes, seasons and movies.

I also have a sub-app called Vault, which is for local media. So if you already have folders of anime, movies or TV shows, you can just add them to Vault and it will sort them out automatically, index them and enrich them with metadata in a similar way to Jellyfin.

Vault: local media automatically indexed and enriched with metadata.

Something else I am going to add in the future is much deeper sync with MAL, Trakt and SIMKL for tracking, and then ratings/reviews integration with services such as MAL, IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic wherever their APIs actually allow it.

The idea is that you can write your review directly from within Colosseum, write it only once, give a rating, and then choose which connected services that review and rating should go to.

The rating would also be standardised for the different sites because Rotten Tomatoes operates on percentages while IMDb, for example, operates on a scale of 1-10.

But I don't want that conversion to just be dumb multiplication.

If you rate a show 7/10 in Colosseum, that doesn't necessarily need to become 70% on a percentage-based service. You would be able to customise how your Colosseum ratings map to different sites.

The ratings and reviews UI shown here is still a prototype. The interface exists as a design for how I want this system to work, but the provider integrations themselves are not all implemented yet. The ratings, reviews and usernames shown in the mock-up are all real though. I pulled highly rated Frieren reviews directly from the respective sites, so none of the review text or usernames are made up.

Prototype for Colosseum’s planned cross-provider ratings and reviews system.

Truth be told, I am yet to really push boundaries when it comes to Colosseum being a streaming client.

I am willing to consider any feature requests users have when it comes to anime.

You can ask for feature requests either on GitHub through Issues or post on r/ColosseumApp. I will consider every last request and respond to you, letting you know whether it is feasible, technically risky, or prohibitively complex to implement and maintain.

But where my app actually excels is manga.

I was already trying to turn Tankoban, the manga and comics side of my app, into a proper volume-driven manga catalogue rather than a chapter-driven one, first through MangaFire, which had a volume reading mode, and later through BookWalker JP, with Jikan/MAL acting as the metadata backbone.

I had essentially created my own manga equivalent of Anime Kitsu. And if I could build a Kitsu for manga, why couldn't I build a Torrentio for manga too?

So I did it using Nyaa as the torrent source. Much like how Torrentio provides stream options for an episode, I could connect each manga volume to a matching CBZ torrent.

For those matches, I prioritise releases from trusted uploaders on Nyaa like 1r0n, danke-Empire and LuCaZ.

They provide the best scans I've come across.

And the result is tens of thousands of manga in the catalogue, with their volumes connected to matching Nyaa uploads wherever a suitable upload exists.

Tankoban: volume-driven manga browsing, downloads and reading.

That distinction is important because not every manga or every volume necessarily has a Nyaa upload.

I will also be adding a chapter-by-chapter mode using Weeb Central as a source if users can't find niche titles or find it inconvenient to wait too long for a volume with very few seeds to download.

Another interesting thing I have started doing is creating Universe pages. Recently I created one for One Piece.

For that page, I searched for pretty much every piece of One Piece media outside of games and non-narrative media like the Vivre Card Databooks, because my app is focused on video, comics/manga and books.

More specifically, I tried to find everything that had an English-translated or English-subtitled source and that Colosseum could actually represent.

There were four English One Piece novels I could find on LibGen, which is currently my primary book provider.

As for manga, I included obscure titles like Chin Piece, Kobiyama Who Likes Koby, etc.

The TV Specials section goes really deep. From Pirate Ganzack to the Foxy Special, I tried to get everything I could find in there.

The TV shows segment contains the One Piece anime, the One Piece live-action series, Fish-Man Island Re-Edited, a placeholder for the upcoming WIT remake, and Koisuru One Piece / One Piece in Love, though I've never watched it.

I have also tried getting One Pace in there, but One Pace does not have a normal Cinemeta entry.

The catalogue is still rough around the edges, and it is possible that there's more One Piece media, like the live stage shows, that has English-subtitled coverage somewhere on the internet.

One Piece Universe: anime, manga, novels, specials, spin-offs and adaptations in one catalogue.

If anyone wants to contribute to this archive/catalogue, or to the main catalogue I painstakingly had to build for manga and comics, you can find it here:

Colosseum Data

Just let me know about any media I missed, either through DMs or on r/ColosseumApp.

And I plan on doing this for other anime franchises that have extensive media across different mediums: manga, anime, live action, TV specials, spin-offs, movies, light novels and so on.

My next target is Naruto.

I will be adding Naruto, Shippuden and Boruto, and I want to find a way to get the Naruto Kai fan edit in there as well, just like I want to eventually solve the One Pace problem for my One Piece page.

Then there is the manga, coloured manga, all the spin-offs, and light novels like the Itachi novels. Basically anything English-translated.

My aim with these Universe pages is pretty simple.

Since my app is built around three things:

  • reading comics and manga
  • reading books
  • watching films, TV and anime

Whenever I create a Universe page for an anime or another franchise, I will try to include as much narrative media available for that franchise as I reasonably can.

Not just the anime or manga, but books and light novels, live-action adaptations, movies, TV specials, spin-offs, fan edits, and even things like live stage shows if English-subtitled versions exist and I can actually source and catalogue them.

My Universe pages are supposed to be a kind of complete archive of a franchise within the media Colosseum supports, where you can find everything related to a particular franchise in one place.

So that's the anime and manga relevant side of my app. But I also expanded this Stremio idea to comics, books, audiobooks and, soon, music too.

So if you're curious about the full product, here's the full Colosseum trailer.

Colosseum on Github.

If anybody is interested in the future of my app, I’ve laid out my plans for the next three releases below.
