We are dedicated to providing a supportive, empathetic, and practical place to talk about student loan debt and all the difficulties that often surround our debts.

That said we do not permit any type of debt shaming, personal attacks, insults, guilting, gaslighting, bullying, harassment, threats, intimidation, trolling, or otherwise attacking others / maliciously unhelpful commenting/behaviors. These will result in a permaban

This also includes statements about telling people to simply pay more, get a better job, trying to change the past (or asking why someone didn't make different past choices), or otherwise telling others how you would live their life. We're focused on the present here and on supporting people where they're at, not where you think they should be.

We also do not advocate for or allow "lender defenders" so to speak. It is one thing to provide useful practical information on how to fill out paperwork or loan paperwork questions, it's another to come and try to defend an industry that quite frankly is part of the reason many are feeling hopeless and stuck. We serve and protect borrowers' interests from a person first approach. We are not here to defend lenders or assist lenders.

Those with active affiliations to the loan industry must clearly identify themselves as such in any initial post or comment. We do not require disclosure of company name, names, or location, but a simple acknowledgement that you are affiliated with the loan industry is required. This is to prevent conflicts of interest and to ensure information provided to our users is given in the best interest of the user being replied to.

Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of the complexities of student loan debt, debt shaming culture, mental health considerations, and the intersection of these variables; we adhere to a very strict moderation policy.

We do this not seek to silence opinions but to provide a space where there is respect and careful consideration given to the difficulties individuals may be experiencing when seeking student loan support, feedback, advice, or information. Given the very real concerns, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, shaming, and pressure that for some comes along with student loan debt, we will do everything in our power to ensure that users will be provided a safe environment to discuss student loan concerns and issues. Regardless of what those concerns may be given one's individual situation and experience.

The rules listed in the sidebar also apply at all times. Please do contact the mods promptly if any concerns arise.

Remember you are not your debt. There is nothing wrong with you for taking out loans or choosing your major/career/life goals. You are not somehow less of a person or undeserving of respect or compassion for having student loan debt. There is no shame wherever you are with your education, career, life, or student loan debt situation. We've got your back here.

I brought this conversation up a few years ago, but in light of recent congressional proposals and new conversations — wanted to see if anyone’s thoughts changed or have more to add? Genuinely wanting to spark some productive conversation!

Corinthian/Everest discharge + SAVE forbearance + PSLF buyback — I’m stuck in multiple forbearances and don’t know what to do

Upvotes

I’m hoping someone here has been in a similar situation because I feel like I’m caught in a student-loan vortex. There are several different things happening with my loans at the same time, and I’m having a hard time figuring out what the safest path forward is.

Here’s my timeline as clearly as I can lay it out:

2007 – Everest College / Corinthian Colleges I started attending Everest College in February 2007 and took out federal student loans. Navient originally serviced these loans.

2013 – Community college I went back to school at my local community college for an associate’s degree and took out additional federal student loans.

2017 – Bachelor’s degree I attended a different school for my bachelor’s degree and took out additional loans.

June 2018 – Consolidation I consolidated my loans. I ended up with two consolidation loans: one subsidized and one unsubsidized. They were serviced by Aidvantage and were later transferred to MOHELA.

This is where everything gets messy.

Corinthian/Everest discharge

In November 2022, I received an email from StudentAid.gov telling me that my loans would be discharged as part of the Department of Education’s action involving Corinthian Colleges because of widespread misconduct.

Then, in January 2025, I received another email from ED confirming that the federal loans I received to attend a Corinthian-owned school would be discharged.

The email specifically said that if the discharge was still incomplete, I did not have to make payments on the loans being discharged, that ED would discharge the full remaining balance of my eligible loans, and that payments previously made to ED on those loans would be refunded.

My understanding has always been that the portion of my debt attributable to Everest/Corinthian would be discharged, but I would still owe the debt from my community college and bachelor’s degree.

However, because all of these loans were eventually consolidated, I have no idea what my balance will actually look like after the Corinthian discharge is finally processed.

PSLF

I’ve worked for a PSLF-qualifying employer for about 11 years.

I currently have 94 qualifying PSLF payments, so I am 26 payments short of 120.

Some periods don’t currently qualify because I was in school/in-school deferment.

However, I currently have approximately 25 months that appear potentially eligible for PSLF buyback.

My plan was pretty straightforward: get onto an eligible repayment plan, make approximately two more qualifying payments, and then request buyback for the remaining 24 months so I could reach 120.

SAVE complication

At some point I was placed into SAVE, and eventually my loans went into the SAVE-related forbearance.

After receiving notice that I needed to select a new repayment plan, I applied for IBR, because that appeared to give me the best payment.

My intention was to get back into repayment, make the couple of payments I still needed, and then pursue PSLF buyback.

Instead, last week I received notice that my IBR application had been canceled because my loans are in forbearance.

At first I thought, “Of course they’re in forbearance — that’s the whole reason I’m trying to change plans.”

But another Redditor suggested that the problem might actually be a Borrower Defense/Corinthian forbearance, rather than just the SAVE forbearance.

Call with MOHELA Tier 2

Yesterday I spoke with a Tier 2 representative who looked more closely at my account.

She confirmed that I apparently have two different forbearances affecting my loans, including a Borrower Defense forbearance.

She told me that I could opt out of the Borrower Defense forbearance so I could presumably enter repayment.

BUT she warned me that opting out could potentially interfere with or complicate the Corinthian discharge, (which, she said, potentially could forgive all my student debt?) that I’m entitled to.

Her other suggestion was to stay in the Borrower Defense forbearance and wait for the Corinthian discharge to finish.

She said that after the discharge is processed, I could enter an eligible repayment plan. By then, enough additional time may have passed that I could potentially use PSLF buyback to reach 120 without needing to make additional regular payments.

That sounds great in theory, but I’m nervous about just sitting in forbearance when I don’t fully understand what happens next.

What I’m trying to figure out

Should I stay in the Borrower Defense forbearance until the Corinthian discharge is completed, or should I opt out so I can get back into repayment and continue progressing toward PSLF?

Could opting out of the Borrower Defense forbearance actually jeopardize or interfere with the Corinthian group discharge? This is probably my biggest concern.

Because my Everest loans were consolidated with loans from schools that are NOT part of the Corinthian discharge, is there any way to determine now what portion of my current consolidation balance should ultimately be discharged? I would really like to know approximately what balance I will still owe afterward.

If I remain in Borrower Defense forbearance and the Corinthian discharge is eventually completed, what happens to the remaining consolidation balance? Does the forbearance automatically end? Do I then choose a repayment plan? Could I automatically be placed into the Standard plan?

Since SAVE is ending/changing separately, does anything happening with SAVE affect my Borrower Defense forbearance, or are those two completely separate things?

Most importantly for PSLF: Can the months I spend in Borrower Defense forbearance potentially be bought back later for PSLF? If so, waiting may actually make the most sense because I could eventually have enough buyback-eligible months to reach 120 without making additional payments.

I also called the Borrower Defense hotline that the Tier 2 representative gave me. They weren't able to answer my questions and basically told me to open a feedback case and hope someone could give me more information.

I’m really hesitant to opt out of anything or make a change until I understand the consequences. I don't want to accidentally jeopardize the Corinthian discharge, but I also don't want to sit in a forbearance for months or years only to find out later that I hurt my PSLF progress.

Has anyone here had Corinthian/Everest loans that were consolidated with loans from other schools AND also been pursuing PSLF?

If so, what happened when your Corinthian portion was discharged? And did anyone successfully use PSLF buyback for the Borrower Defense forbearance period?

Please ask me any questions you need. I know this is complicated, and I have a hard time keeping all the dates, consolidations, servicers, forbearances, and rules straight, but I’ll try to provide anything that would help.

At this point, I mainly want to know: What is the lowest-risk path that preserves both my Corinthian discharge and my ability to reach PSLF as soon as possible?

TPD Discharge Day of Week Approval

Thumbnail

I’ve seen so many say they get an email for approval, is there a certain time of day everybody gets the approval email? I’ve heard but confirmed, they batch process so everybody gets the email for approval in the morning and was just wondering if there was any truth to that?

Applied in May and it has updated 6 times so far but no approval yet.

If you have been approved will you respond with a simple day of the week and time you got the email?

Thanks!

Abroad education loan suggestion

I'm a 2nd year btech CSE student who is planning to go to US as an international undergraduate transfer. My cgpa in my first year is 7.47 and my 12th is 95.2% , 10th 8.7 I'll be applying to some colleges mostly in Texas cuz with my cgpa I can get a scholarship that unlocks in state tuition fees which is pretty less around $10k - $9k but the only thing that is stopping me is my co signer income which is 22k per month and no collateral is present . My co signer has good credit score but due to the income many lenders are saying it's a no and also for UG collateral is required. Ik many say masters but that is a lot indeed compared to what I have right now. I need a loan about 35-38L for my tuition and dorm and meal plan fees for a while ,remaining all I can manage thru a part time. Please suggest me some lenders or any agency that helps.

Unsure of which plan to pick

got about 22k in debt through MOHELA half in subsidized and the other half in unsubsidized

been paying it off since 2018

got a new job last year and had an AGI of about 7000 last year. I make about 2 grand a month

The student loan calculator says $0 payments for IBR and PAYE but I’m not confident in picking them, I figure since some are going away in 2028, something better may come along then. very trepidatious about choosing RAP though

How would a private student loan creditor collect from me in Texas?

I don’t live in Texas now but I may be moving there for work soon as I possibly may have found a better job opportunity. Unfortunately I am in a lot of debt from grad school, fell on hard times after graduation and didn’t get the job I was expecting so I’ve been living paycheck to paycheck and couldn’t pay my loans so they are now dinging my credit and I’m close to going into default. They are absolutely refusing to work with me. My initial plan was to let it default take the credit hit and then try to settle before they start garnishing my wages because this kind of debt is very difficult to get discharged in bankruptcy.

I googled it because I was curious and I was surprised to discover that Texas is actually one of the most debtor friendly states. With few exceptions Wage garnishment is not allowed and they have generous exemptions for homes and vehicle. I know with federal student loans state laws don’t apply because they can do an administrative garnishment and don’t need to go through the court system but private student loans are similar to other forms of consumer debt in that they would have to sue me get a judgement and then enforce it.

I do know they could also freeze my bank account but from what I understand this is different from wage garnishment where assuming they have a judgement they can petition the court to take money out of someone’s paycheck every month as opposed to a bank account which is a one time thing so they would have to keep going back to the court to do this repeatedly. If I don’t keep large balances in my
Bank account rent live paycheck to paycheck and have no non exempt assets how would they collect? They would have to guess what amount I’d have in the bank at any given time.

How does making extra payments affect RAP benefits when just paying 1 out of 4 loans?

My girlfriend has a bout $46,500 loans split up as 4 loans. Its being serviced by Nelnet. The monthly interest accrual was around $200ish dollars but now is $160 with auto debit set up. When she signed up for RAP it made her monthly payment $38 dollars a month. How does interest accrual now work in her situation. Once the auto debit is made does it accrued interest and stop when reaches her monthly payment amount ($38)? Does it accrued but then gets drop later. Also more importantly how does it work if she makes extra or larger payments to one of the loans while leaving the other 3 to just get auto debit. Is it better to just let it auto debit first (on the 27th of the month), Then make one large payment to one specific loan in an attempt to bring down the balance. The ultimate goal here is not to accrued so much interest.
