MODERATOR POST | منشورة إدارية Call for r/Sudan moderators
Salaam everyone,
As you well know, our sub has grown quite a bit in the last several years. We recently reached the 34K mark and our members are remarkably diverse in terms of age, country of residence, and interests. Undoubtedly, the ongoing war has dominated the topics of discussion but it's no surprise given how much it has impacted all of us.
With this growth, we now have a much broader range of perspectives and worldviews. We have had many healthy discussions but sometimes they can get quite heated. Our mod team has been working hard to ensure that the discourse here is within the bounds of civility and mutual respect, and that the topics are relevant to Sudan and the Sudanese people, regardless of where they are.
But with this growth, the burden of moderating the sub has become overwhelming for our team, who are all volunteers with real-life responsibilities and grappling with the effects of the war. So on behalf of the team, I wanted to invite those who interested in serving as mods to nominate themselves to join the mod team.
We are looking for 2-3 mods who meet these criteria:
- At least 1 year active on Reddit and r/Sudan to ensure that they are familiar with the sub rules and culture, and the rules of Reddit at large (Reddiquette).
- High quality contributions and engagement.
- Adherence to the sub rules, particularly the rules about civility and mutual respect, and no bigotry and discrimination.
- Proficiency in both English and Arabic is important given that this is a bilingual sub.
Mods are expected engage regularly with the Mod Queue (e.g., approve posts, remove spam, respond to mod reports, etc.); be fair and transparent with our users; and continue to contribute to the sub as much as they're able to. We welcome candidates who are able to inject fresh ideas and initiatives to meet the evolving needs of our growing community.
If you are interested, please DM the Mod Team to express your interest and provide a brief bio about yourself (you do not need to break your anonymity). Use this thread if you have any questions about serving as a moderator or the process.

Communism and Sudanese community
Lately I have this weird Idea about the communism in Sudan and if we could run this country by a modern version of communism . Because I think communism can turn a country of peasants into a superpower as we see in history with examples like the Soviet Union and China and if we can make our own version of communism with a clear vision and objectives like Economic development, infrastructure, and solving social problems.
I really wanna hear your opinions guys

QUESTION | كدي سؤال Sudanese medical student going to Romania for an IFMSA Research Exchange — anyone with experience?
I wanted to ask if there’s anyone here who has done an IFMSA or any exchange program in Romania, especially a research exchange.
I’d like to hear about your experience, especially:
How was the research/work environment?
How were the supervisors and the people you worked with?
How was your experience as a Sudanese/international student?
What was accommodation and daily life like?
How was the social environment and interaction with other students?
Is there anything you wish you had known before going?
If you’ve done an exchange in Romania, I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience.

QUESTION | كدي سؤال I became very close to a man I met online, but his intensity is making me feel trapped and guilty. What should I do?
I’m in my early 20s British / half North African and recently met a man online ( ( not dating app ) completely by chance. I originally went on the app because I was bored and wanted to make friends. I met this man, and we started talking. He told me about his life in Sudan and everything he has been through because of the war.
We ended up becoming extremely close, extremely quickly. We would talk for 4–5 hours a day and message throughout the day. I genuinely liked talking to him. I liked hearing about his life, and I became very fond of him. I also wanted to help him because I’m in a more privileged position and he had dreams for his life before the war disrupted everything.
He has a lot of genuinely positive qualities. I haven’t seen him do anything objectively bad to me, and I don’t want to unfairly portray him as some horrible person. He’s open-minded, kind and has been caring towards me. In terms of husband material he has all the correct qualities, not harsh, hardworking blah blah etc.
But things started becoming emotionally intense very quickly. He offered to send me money several times I declined - this is also difficult from Sudan anyway
He would make huge declarations of love and tell me that I was the only woman for him, that he couldn’t continue with anyone else, etc. At first I didn’t know how to respond, but eventually these statements started making me feel guilty and uncomfortable.
I eventually told him honestly how they made me feel. He was understanding and said something along the lines of, “I won’t ask you to feel the same way, but that’s how I feel.” He said me prayed to god and met me the next day so that’s his sign.
I told him that I wanted us to slow down because we were basically jumping straight into imagining our futures together when we’d only known each other for a few weeks. Our lives are also incredibly different.
He seemed to understand.
Then I spoke to my friend, and she gave me some advice. I told him that I thought we should just be friends for now, before things became even deeper.
I told him I was still happy to have him in my life and that I wanted to help him get back on his feet. I offered to help him look for work, help with his CV and potentially connect him with people through my own network because he had dreams for his life before the war.
I basically said:
Let’s be friends for now. Let’s see where life takes us. If, once things are more settled, it genuinely looks like we could have a realistic future together, then we can talk about it. But right now we’re moving far too quickly.
I thought he understood.
We continued talking normally that day, and I thought he’d accepted what I said.
Then later that evening, he started making the same intense declarations again. He was saying that even if I called him my friend, he didn’t see me as a friend and that I was much more than that to him.
I didn’t really know how to respond, so I stayed quiet.
Then he started crying.
That’s when I realised how emotionally dependent this situation might have become.
He has told me that his entire life has been dark and that I am the only good thing that has happened to him ( he says these things multiple times a week by the way ) He swears that’s how he feels. He also told me that he was severely burned during the war and that his fiancée left him afterwards due to this.
He talks about his life as being full of misery, and I genuinely feel sorry for him.
But I also realised something uncomfortable:
I don’t actually know this man.
I’ve known him for a few weeks.
I’ve never met him in person.
Our lives are completely different.
There’s a 14-year age gap.
His English is good enough for us to communicate, but his comprehension isn’t always great, which already makes communication difficult sometimes.
And realistically, if I were thinking about building a life with someone, I don’t know how practical our situation would be.
There is also the obvious issue that meeting someone from the internet for the first time carries risks. I don’t actually know what someone is like until I’ve met them in real life, and he could potentially do anything to me if I met him.
The confusing part is that I don’t have some obvious “red flag” to point to. He hasn’t threatened me, asked me for large amounts of money, insulted me, controlled me or done anything I can specifically identify as abusive or weird.
He’s just very intense, very emotional and very sensitive, and I don’t think that’s compatible with me. I explained 4 times through the past 5 weeks to him.
And I feel partly responsible because I did encourage the closeness initially. I really liked him. I wanted to get to know him. I enjoyed talking to him. I was interested in his life and wanted to help him.
But then reality hit me.
I realised I don’t actually know him well enough to be talking about a future together , but I never promise I said amen to his prayers that’s alll.
So I’ve now told him that I think we need to keep contact minimal. I’m still willing to help him with practical things, like his CV, finding work or giving him guidance, but I don’t want to continue the romantic/emotional side of the relationship.
And this is where I’m really struggling.
I feel incredibly guilty.
Part of me feels like I’ve abandoned someone who has already lost so much.
And honestly, one of the reasons I couldn’t completely cut him off is because I worry that something terrible would happen to him. I’ve started feeling like if I walk away, he’ll fall apart. I’ve even had the thought that he might kill himself, and I feel horrible for admitting that because I don’t know whether that’s actually true or whether I’m taking responsibility for something that isn’t mine to carry.
But why do I feel so guilty?
I didn’t promise him a relationship.
I didn’t ask him to make me the centre of his life.
I’ve actually told him repeatedly that I want to slow down.
I’ve told him we’re moving too quickly.
I’ve told him I don’t know whether I see a future together.
And I’ve now told him I want minimal contact.
Yet I still feel like I’m hurting someone who has already suffered so much.
Am I being cruel by stepping away, or am I allowing guilt and sympathy to keep me in a situation I don’t actually want?
And if someone tells you that you’re the only good thing in their life and becomes extremely distressed when you try to establish boundaries, where does compassion end and emotional responsibility begin? Anytime we would not speak for a day or so or I gave him a less enthusiastic reply he would tell me the next morning he didn’t eat or sleep and his mood is low and he feels sick. I feel responsible for his happiness or feel like I have to maintain a relationship because I’m afraid of what might happen if I cut him off fully.
What would you do in my situation?
