Yup, you'll need it when you don't think you will. I've gone into the water head first, in very light wind. There was just enough wind and movement to shift the board sideways a little, and that's all it took. I always wear my PFD.

Love seeing this. I’m a super strong swimmer, and I still wear my auto inflatable pfd, can’t swim well if I’m unconscious after smacking my head on my board or a deck. I’m not a “mandatory” anything kind of guy, but I still urge all my people to wear protection where they can’t breathe.

Same here. Old swimming instructor, and agree, water safety is so so important. It is nothing to take lightly, and though I love love love water, I have deep respect for it.

Can I ask which kind of auto inflatable you use? You obviously want it to auto inflate when you're out, but not if you just fall off your board and are nothing but wet. Or do you just never fall off (I'm not at that level yet)?

Which is better than a Word document, I guess, but do make sure that you use it wisely, and good that you have something else to share with others or use yourself as needed.

Inflatable life jackets are considered safe and effective for adults and strong swimmers when maintained.
However, they're not approved or recommended for children under 16 or for anyone weighing less than 80 pounds. They're also not the right choice for non-swimmers, weak swimmers, or anyone unconscious, as inflation may not activate quickly enough in time-sensitive situations.

With or without a PFD, you will always submerge at least briefly when you fall in unless you use the old lifeguard jump-in-and-slap-the-water arm motion, but that usually takes planning and the correct position for your landing.

If you’re an experienced paddleboarder, and you feel confident that you will inflate your belt PFD without fail as you are going down, it’s probably fine. And it is certainly better than nothing! But if you’re unconscious or something happens to impair your reaction time, you could be in some trouble.
