General Question Creatine Monohydrate Side Effects
Has anyone experienced sleep problems when taking creatine Monohydrate? I have seen tons of people saying it helps with so many things and can't find anything about it affecting sleep.

Anxiety, insomnia and heart palpitations at 3-5 grams. It simply isn’t for everyone

Omg. I wish I saw this earlier. The crazy thing is I used creatine fine when I was younger. Now crazy anxiety, basically panic attacks. Did elimination to find out what it was and it’s 100% creatine. Everyone is different

I cant tell for sure if it was the creatine or not but I swear I had chest pain more often after about a couple weeks of taking it consistently.

I see people say this all the time, the fact is, people who have that experience with it are deficient in other areas...meaning they don't have enough other vitamins to make sure the creatine goes to the right places and instead it creates a bottleneck which give crappy side effects.
I'm not a proponent of using chat gpt for vitamin or supplement info for the majority of people but I have chat gpt'd this exact issue before and it's accurate.

Terrible insomnia even at tiny doses early in the morning. Brand didn't matter. Search this sub; plenty of people with the same response. Plenty of people who don't experience insomnia, too. I wish I were one of them.

It disturbed my sleep. I'd wake up for about 30 minutes every couple of hours whenever I took it. My dreams were also very bizarre.
Oddly enough, I wasn't really tired the next day, but the sleep interruptions were annoying enough to make me stop.

When i take creatine, it makes my tongue swell up when I sleep. I wake up multiple times of the night choking on my tongue.

For me it made my ankles and feet swell. It causes your body to hold on to water so

Some people have had problems with it, usually with the nootropic doses that are larger than for working out. Usual recommendation is to take in the morning/cut back on the amounts.

Yup. I posted about it here a couple weeks ago. Absolutely happened to me — I stopped taking it and i’m sleeping great again

Here is what I found in recent years struggling with nightmare creatine insomnia, literally zero sleep for years here and there.
Creatine + insomnia — the methylation angle, explained
Here's the actual mechanism:
Your body makes creatine naturally through two enzymes — AGAT then GAMT. That GAMT step methylates guanidinoacetate using SAM (S-adenosylmethionine) as the methyl donor. This one reaction eats up roughly 40% of all SAM-derived methyl groups in your body. It's the single biggest methyl sink in human metabolism.
So why doesn't supplementing wreck everyone's sleep?
When you supplement with creatine, your liver senses you already have enough and downregulates AGAT. Less guanidinoacetate gets made → GAMT has less work to do → less SAM gets burned up.
Net effect for most people: supplementing actually frees up methylation capacity, it doesn't drain it.
Where it goes wrong
The problem shows up mainly in people who already have poor methylation capacity, e.g.:
- MTHFR gene variants
- Low B12 / folate / B6
- Heavy alcohol use
- Already-elevated homocysteine
In these people, the SAM/SAH ratio is already tight — and that same limited methyl-group pool is also needed for melatonin synthesis, neurotransmitter methylation (serotonin/dopamine pathways), and phosphatidylcholine production.
If that pool is already stretched thin, adding creatine into the mix can tip things into a wired, "can't shut my brain off" state — even though creatine itself isn't a stimulant and doesn't touch GABA or melatonin receptors directly.
It's not just methylation, either
Creatine also boosts brain phosphocreatine/energy reserves. For some people, that extra energy buffer directly reduces the brain's perceived need for deep sleep — the brain simply stays too "topped up" and awake, independent of the methylation story above.
And the effect isn't rare in the data: one trial found 47% of creatine users reported sleep disturbances, versus only 7% on placebo — a pretty stark signal that this is a real.
What to avoid if you want to protect your methylation
If you're in the sensitive group, these are the biggest known drains on methylation capacity — worth cutting before blaming creatine entirely:
- Alcohol — depletes folate, B12, and SAM; the top offender by far
- Synthetic folic acid (fortified bread, cereal, energy drinks, cheap multivitamins) — poorly converted, especially with MTHFR variants; look for 5-MTHF/folate instead on labels
- Smoking — inactivates B6 and depletes folate/SAM
- Excess sugar, refined carbs, and high animal protein/saturated fat — raise homocysteine and burn through B-vitamin stores
- Antacids/PPIs — block B12 absorption
- High-dose niacin (B3) without methyl support — consumes methyl groups directly
- Chronic stress and heavy caffeine — both increase methylation demand
- Excess unspecified "B-complex" or methylated supplements if you have slow COMT — can overmethylate and worsen anxiety/insomnia; some people do better on non-methylated forms (hydroxocobalamin, folinic acid) instead of methyl-B12/methylfolate
Important context
Population data shows people with adequate creatine intake report less sleep trouble on average, not more. This looks like two mechanisms (energy-buffer effect + methylation-load effect) converging on a sensitive subgroup — not a universal side effect, but clearly not a tiny subgroup either given that 47% figure.
Potential fix that people report working
- Switch to plain monohydrate (no stims/pre-workout blends mixed in)
- Take it earlier in the day, not at night
- Cut the "avoid" list above, especially alcohol and synthetic folic acid
- Support methylation cofactors: B12, folate, B6, choline, magnesium, zinc

Can't speak on sleep, but the water retention hit my face hard. I was having a pillow fight with my kids, took a stray pillow to the face, and swelled up in a minute, then settled down half an hour later. Wondering if anyone else experienced that.

Take less. With a meal. Spread it out through the day. Don’t take any after 2pm.

Depression, anxiety and insomnia.
What is fixing it for me since stopping 6 weeks ago: magnesium glycinate, glycine and l theanine 2hrs before bed.
Good luck bro.

I made a post recently about it affecting my sleep and the one thing i noticed is the pure creatines like creapure or pharmaceutical grade affect my sleep but if i just take regular ole creatine monohydrate, i sleep fine.

You obviously haven’t searched very hard. There are many reports on Reddit of people claiming creatine gave them sleep issues.

Insomnia for me. Literally every time I try it again I can’t sleep. So I just won’t take it any more

I've seen no data to convince me that creatine on its own causes impaired sleep, anxiety, depression, or any of the other common complaints. It is almost certain that there are other factors at play.
Anecdotally, I actually found that my mood and sleep improved while taking it, though I can't tell you if that is because of the creatine, that fact that I was training consistently while taking it, or some combination of the two.

i take it with dinner and sleep like a rock, maybe you're overthinking it
