Switch Repair Megathread

Hey folks! I work in a shop that does gaming console repairs, so I figured I should share what I know!

Getting prepared

Firstly, make sure you feel confident in repairing something like this yourself, and be sure you can deal with the reality you might not come out with a working console. I accept no responsibility for any damage to your console, this is all on YOU.

Tools and equipment

Here is a list of basic things you should have when repairing a Switch. You can find most of these from the parts suppliers I list below:
If you have any questions about what these are, please don't hesitate to ask

  • ESD mat (yes, please use this)
  • ESD Safe tweezers
  • Tri-point Y00 screwdriver
  • JIS #000 screwdriver
  • Plastic spudger
  • JIS #0 screwdriver
  • iSesamo
  • A clear workspace to do a repair on
  • A magnetic screw mat (optional, but very helpful)
  • 1-2 hours of your time, depending on the repair, skill, and luck
  • Soldering equipment is only needed for some deeper repairs. For suggestions on these, just ask! It depends on a few different factors

Parts

Here is a list of suppliers we get parts from:
* iFixit
* MobileDefenders
* InjuredGadgets
* And when all else fails, eBay

The suppliers I listed have good return policies and good warranties (minus eBay, that's hit and miss). Feel free to call them for any questions about their parts, or comment/shoot me a message!

Guides and more information

  • iFixit is always a good place to find guides if you prefer pictures
  • YouTube has some good guides if you prefer videos! Just follow this format when searching:

    Nintendo Switch [part] replacement

  • GBATemp is the most active area of information regarding the Nintendo Switch

  • GsmArena has some information, but I think this is more for last-resort purposes as the forum used is for every gaming console

Is anyone else experiencing this? Do you know how to fix it?

For my Switch Lite, I bought a regular SD card to have more storage. But every time the console shuts down, corrupted data appears, and I have to reformat the card over and over again each time My switch keeps running out of battery. Any idea why this is happening?.

Not mine, but a friend's that asked for help.

Said he got a black stripe across the screen while playing. Allegedly no drops or hits occurred.

Switch works fine while docked.

Took it to a 3rd party shop to repair, they told him there was nothing they could do and gave him back the switch, but the screen wouldn't turn on (You could see the back light turning on, though).

I ordered a new screen to replace it, but decided to open it up to take a look just in case. The shop did an incredibly poor job, many of the screws where stripped, the thermal paste was completely removed(but they didn't replace it), and the ribbon cable was somewhat mangled.

I cleaned the pins on the ribbon cable, reseated it, and this is what it shows now instead of a black screen. It should be the screen but I'm worried they managed to damage the connector while "working" on it.

TL;DR Black stripe appeared across screen. Took it to a shop, screen wouldn't turn. Reseated cable, screen shows this. What are the chances the connector is fucked instead of the screen?

My left OLED switch controller broke, is there a way I can get it fixed without buying a new one?

I’ve had my switch for probably 3 years now and my controllers did disconnect a lot the past year but now my left one fully won’t turn on no matter what I do. It wasn’t even a user error just died on its own which for 3 years is ridiculous to have to get a new one that’s $80!!!

Please tell me that there's some at home tricks, that I can put some type of glue and stick a small piece of plastic on it to make my right joystick work or something, I really do not wanna solder anything.

Is there anything that can be done? I don’t mind if it’s a bit costly, but I want to repair it since it was my first console.

Wasted time checking battery or replace?

Took me roughly 5 hours just trying to get the battery out, does it look normal? It’s my switch from 2017, took it apart due to the back panel lifting more than before and especially after an overheating incident.

Nintendo switch overheating after battery replacement + new thermal paste

Had a switch that was unused for 2 years and battery ended up dying (wouldn’t charge up, overheat within 15 mins)

Got a new battery from ifixit, repasted thermal paste and played in dock mode for 30 ish minutes and got a message that it’s overheating still

Any ideas of what I can do or what went wrong? Used thermal grizzly kryonaut thermal paste, switch didn’t seem like it had a lot of dust or anything in it when it was open.

Side note: it feels like games take an excessive amount of time to load, Luigi’s mansion took 2-3 mins to load up initially, unsure if it has to do with the SD card reader being attached/detached or damage during the process? Game is virtually on the SD card not physical

Worth trying to repair?

I've got a Mariko switch , SD card and game card do not read, touch screen not responding.

is it repairable?

I've fitted done a couple of picofly installs successfully and rebuilt joycons but feel this may be beyond my skill set.

purchased recently for cheap, not opened it up yet but the joycons are easily worth what I paid

Percentage stock at 20% & Joycon fails to connect while charging

Hey everyone, looking for insights on a weird battery issue that popped up on my modded Switch. I haven't seen symptoms like these in any forums I've visited.

The console was working completely fine yesterday. I played docked for about an hour playing NieR: Automata, and then by the next day, these problems started happening:

- Percentage Stuck & Dropping: The battery percentage gets stuck around 20% (via Battery-NX / Horizon OS) and drops erratically.

- Abnormally High Battery Temps: Internal battery temperature reaches 48–49°C under load or charging, which is way higher than usual.

- Joy-Con Detection Issue While Charging: When attached to the rails while the Switch is charging, Joy-Cons fail to detect physically and require constant re-attaching or just removing the charger altogether.

Again, all of these issues came up at once

Model: Switch V1 with Picofly Modchip

Charging Setup: Official Dock, but I'm using a Xiaomi 67W fast charger which may be the reason for all of this stuff. Because I combined the 67W charger with the official dock.

Could this require a fuel gauge/power management ic replacement? Like could this be an expensive repair?

Capasitor values

Hello, I recently got a damaged switch lite and it seems to be a wrong picofly instalation 3 of the capasitors (both sp1 and sp2 which I know have the same value of 1µF) and then there’s another one, the 3rd one from left to right on the same row which is also missing somehow, I’d assume is also a 1µF right? Just so I know to buy a bunch of those and replace them
