Other Welcome week
Hi im an incoming transfer student at tcnj … I keep seeing the welcome week events emails. I was wondering if ppl actually go to those bc it does sound fun but I don’t have anyone to go w because Idk anyone at tcnj I might bring a friend. But basically wondering if ppl go to that cuz I don’t wanna end up being the only person at those things. Lmk!!

You can’t bring a friend who isn’t a first year or transfer student. Do students go? Yes. Do more first year students go than transfer and commuters? Also yes.
You should definitely go since it will help you bond with other students who are starting at tcnj. You’ll be in a cohort with other transfer students which will help you with some of the unique things about being a transfer.

Yes! Absolutely go! I was a transfer student myself and I went to Welcome Week with a couple new friends I made on move-in day. It was a blast and we met a few more people that became part of our group. As others have said the whole point of Welcome Week is to get you to meet new people and it certainly will do that! Take it from me I'm a huge introvert. Don't be that person that doesn't go because you will regret it later on! Go and have fun!

On a related note I would also recommend you go to Funival at the end of the school year! I never got a chance to as both my years at TCNJ overlapped with COVID so it was cancelled each year (I'm still bummed out about that tbh), but you definitely should

Sure 👍 I’ll keep that in mind! Is it like an end of school year celebration or a farewell for seniors type thing?

Yeah basically. A bunch of carnival rides, events, and other stuff are held in the parking lots. It’s for all grades! Happens after finals I think.

Yes, lots of people go! I went with my roommate to a good amount of the events and it definitely helped me deal with my nerves about starting the school year

Definitely go! The whole point is to meet people, many won’t have someone to go with.

You should go! But if you don’t go, make sure to let them know so they don’t charge you, they charged me and I didn’t go… And STILL charged me.
EDIT: meant to say transfer orientation!

IGNORE ME!!! I meant to say orientation. I had to pay for orientation. Not welcome week. Totally different. You’ll love the uni I’m a transfer student too!

This comment was correct. There is a “Welcome” fee on my fall tuition. Unfortunately, I didn’t attend as I have a long commute and this was slightly early into summer. I somewhat wish I attended at least one event.

They mentioned how all new students, including new transfer students are required to attend some of the sessions during welcome week, which I find a little annoying. It's a no for me, especially since I have to work (already emailed someone about it).
Some of us here are not 18-20 years old. Some of us are working adults who can't just go to these things on a whim unfortunately. I'm not desperate to make friends or introductions. I just want to finish my bachelor's degree so I can move on to my career goals.

Initially I felt that way too but I think welcome week could be a great opportunity to get to know campus and clubs. And we’re also gonna need study groups so it might be helpful for that.

It's great you feel that way, but I'm personally really good. I'm nearing late 20s. I'm not looking to join any clubs (no time for that with the amount of homework I'll have in my major, going to classes, and working), and I find study groups extremely distracting from studying funny enough. This is not my first time in college, so I promise I'll be fine.
I also already have an amazing group of friends. We've all been close since high school. Some of us are married now and home owners, which is crazy to think about. One of my friends actually works at TCNJ (not as a professor), so it'll be amusing to see each other pass by on campus from time to time.
Edit: I'm just someone who dropped out of college a few years ago and found their way back to commit themselves to get their bachelor's degree.

I understand. All the best anyway!

You too! If I was younger and I wasn't relying on work to pay the bills, I would have considered attending welcome week.

Lots of people go! So much so that there are often lines for events. It is mostly freshman, but there are some transfer student specific events that are a great way to meet some others transferring in. Silent disco is the big winner. Definitely try to check it out. It’s a ton of fun and the djs normally have some great mixes going on.
