Tactics Ogre/ Ogre Battle Series FAQ

Hello Knights. With the release of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, it is a good time to examine the series as a whole. Although this subreddit is dedicated to Tactics Ogre, it goes hand-in-hand with Ogre Battle. Below are some general questions that will help guide you through the entire series -

List of games (in order of original release)

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen (MotBQ)

  • Released on SNES, PSX, Sega Saturn, Wii VC, and WiiU VC

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (LUCT)

  • Released on SNES, PSX, & Sega Saturn
  • Remade as Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fortune
    • Released on PSP
  • Remade as Tactics Ogre: Reborn
    • Released on PS4/PS5, Steam (PC), and Switch

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (PoLC)

  • Released on N64

Ogre Battle Gaiden: Prince of Zenobia (PoZ)

  • Released on Neo Geo Pocket Color

Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (KoL)

  • Released on Game Boy Advance

Which games were released in English? Ogre Battle Gaiden was the only release to not make it to the west. Otherwise, all have been officially translated in English

What order should you play? Personally, I like to play them in series chronological order. KoL -> MotBQ -> PoZ -> LUCT -> PoLC. MotBQ & PoZ and LUCT & PoLC take place at the same times, so they can be flipped if you choose this way. Otherwise, MotBQ & LUCT are good starting points.

Will I miss out on story if I play in a different order? Not really, though I say this with some hesitation. There is an overarching plot to the series, but each game is a self-contained story. There are also some characters that appear in multiple games. Aside from some flavor, I don't think you would miss out by playing a sequel first. Prince of Zenobia is the only one that I can't say for certain, as I have not spent much time with the story.

How do the games play? The three Ogre Battle games play similarly to grand RTS games, whereas the two Tactics Ogre games play like traditional SRPGs (think grid-based combat). They are larger scaled, so battles can take some time. The games are also heavy on unit customization, so expect to spend some time in menus. All of that being said, each game has its specific nuances.

What is the setting of the series? The games are set in a traditional fantasy setting with limited technology. Only PoZ and MotBQ take place in the same place, so you get to see a few different countries throughout the world. There is also some in-game lore that expands beyond what is shown in the game.

What were some of the inspirations behind the series? Yasumi Matsuno, the series creator, enjoyed quite a bit of pop culture which lent to the series. The main title and some of the subtitles are taken directly from Queen songs. He also used some imagery from Flash Gordon (Vartans) and other films. He also drew heavy inspiration from real events, specifically the Yugoslav Wars. This inspired some of the darker portions of the game's narrative.

When will there be a new game in the series? There is no news of a new entry to the series. Hopefully Reborn will lead to a new entry, but it remains to be seen.

This was a pretty general overview of a very rich series. If you are interested, there are many interviews that contain information regarding the series development. Otherwise, feel free to ask questions below and we will try to answer them.

Tactics Ogre Reborn Keeps on Giving! Spoiler

Even after doing “everything” I’m still finding stuff to do. I recently finished the final Coda 4 battle and thought that would be end of my time with the game. I already fought through PotD and San Bronsa many times farming most of the relics and maxing quite a few. Fought all the Heavenly Generals and farmed their weapons. I even went through the Coda 4 battle a few times to collect all of the Dark Knights weapons. My main squad is OP from all the charms I’ve collected from PotD and San Bronsa runs. With any other game I probably would have called it here.

But I still hadn’t messed with any of the Cursed Weapons and that’s what I’ve been doing currently, along with building out alternate squads. Hiring some poor sap, changing their name to something crazy (since that’ll be the weapon’s name), figuring out the right element and class, then sacrificing them to make a fast weightless WMD; it’s just all really cool!

There’s still a handful of Cursed Weapons I need to get to drop. Still need to do Coda 4 with just Denam, Catuia and Vyce. Still need to 100% the Warren Report. Still need to mess around with the Ogre Blade, get some more lichs, and divine knights. Honestly I still need to go back and let Donnalto die so I can get Felicia… Ive gotten in completionist mindsets with other games but nothing like this!

So fellow Tactics Ogre addicts what keeps you coming back to the game even after you feel you’ve done everything? What are new or different team comps you’ve tried? Elusive drops or recruits you keep trying for?

Tactics Ogre Does anyone have a Reborn save they could give me?

I lost my Reborn save after some asshat wiped it and I don't want to start the grind back up again. I'm gonna allow myself to be loose with the requirements, but I ask for a save that contains these things.

  1. Neutral Route cleared with Catiua surviving, preferably Oelias and Dievold are alive too

  2. Buccaneer class unlocked with Azelstan in the party

  3. Songstress class is unlocked with Iuria being in the party.

  4. Fusilier class is unlocked with Lindl in the party

  5. The first few floors of the Palace of the Dead is completed with Rudlum being the party

  6. The shamans have been unlocked with their ultimate spells.

  7. Every unique/seni-unique character is still alive in the party.

I don't need all of these in a save, but those would be preferable. Thank you if you do have something along these lines

Tactics Ogre Do I need to change Denam to other classes and back to Lord again as I level up?

Playing Reborn. I got Lord class, and, following community advice, switched Denam to all the classes I had before going to Lord at level 36. I haven't done Bucaneer or Fusiler yet since those weren't available at the time. I noticed, now at level 40, that certain skills my other units have recently gotten (like Lament IV) did not transfer. Do I need to switch Denam around again (maybe when I get to 50?) Are there shenanigans with the Ogre Blade I should be using when I get that? As always, all advice is appreciated.

Tactics Ogre potd drop list

I'm playing Reborn and can't seem to find the right drop list for POTD. None of the floors correspond with mine. I think they might not be for the Reborn version despite their claim. Can someone please direct me to one that is?

Thanks

Tactics Ogre Everytime I replay this game, it amazes me

I grew up like a lot of 90s JRPGs fans just astonished by the SNES classics FFIV and VI, Chrono Trigger. They got me hooked on jrpgs at 5 years old. And they were easily the most impressive and immersive games for the snes, even outshining juggernauts like Super Metroid and Castlevania IV. But I gotta say Tactics Ogre has such depth on every facet of the game that I don't really think any other snes game can quite touch. It wasn't until i was 12 or 13 that I got this game for the PS1 and I was coming off FFT, so I had my expectations very high. I will admit at first, I was a little off put by the SEEMINGLY basic class customization and the less vibrant graphics. But as I progressed I realized there is so much beneath the surface and much more strategy was needed than in FFT. I fell in love with the game; it will always be a top 5 game for me. Currently playing the One Vision mod, and falling in love with it all over again. And man that soundtrack slaps 🤣

Tactics Ogre Need better damage from Lord Denam's spells. Also, can someone please explain the piercing/ slashing/ crushing business with the weapons.

Playing Reborn. After watching some YouTube videos (shout out to Mr. Potato - your knowledge is appreciated, sir!), I realize I understand even less of this game than I thought. And I already didn't think I knew much. So....

  1. How can I get Lord Denam's magic to actually do real damage? Is it the INT? Also, do the elemental/ racial bonuses of his equipped weapon matter?

  2. So those stats on the weapons, pierce/ slash/ crush are actually primarily affecting my defense? Did I hear that right? Does it add a bonus to the finishers that deal that type of damage?

Meme PSA: Heavenly Generals are weak against crossdressers

So as part of my no item run, I previously had a bunch of naked wizards hauling ass against an enfeebled final boss, chucking their basic ass bolt ftw while lord denam spammed out free rez.

Well apparently naked is old news. Did you know that dressing your casters (half of them male) in high boots, alluring dresses and luck rings make them irresistible (pun intended) to heavenly generals? Apply enfeebled, HP/life drain away, crit after crit. Fabulous. Also I love this game.

Tactics Ogre Do challenge runs usually just include the main game and nof POTD or CODA? I figure that extends game time a ton if people try to do multiple challenges.

Tactics Ogre Do the "tactics" get any deeper in reborn?

I'm in 2C and feeling just how "flat" the tactical depth is. I can't find any text about elements affecting terrain bonuses so I'm assuming that's no longer a thing. Combined with class-limited weapons, overcorrecting DEX's accuracy mechanic so it barely matters, refocusing equipement decisions purely on "number go up" (instead of the RT tradeoff having a big impact), flooding every class with skills so much that skills and spells are no longer rare and game-changing... I could go on. (the skills are "neat" and funish but I'm guessing they will just be obsolete in chapter 4, or they're going to make the chapter 3/4 skills seem like more of the same)

The VA (mostly), the music, the pace and generally the experience overall is still very fun and I don't regret that this remake was made. But really -- did they just sand off all the edges or am I missing something?

More palace of the dead questions Spoiler

So I made it to level 100 but it was just a generic fight no named boss. it now wants me to exit but I'm not about to go through all 100 levels of this again without knowing what I did wrong. I remember reading online where someone said that you can replay previous chapters but I can't get that to work yet. what exactly do I need to do at this point?

Any prep/consumables to consider specifically for POTD?

I've reached to CODA2 using nothing but healing items and rez items 99% of the time (I'm a pathological consumable non-user, don't ask about my 200kg of potions and scrolls in Baldur's Gate 3 rotting in my backpack), but it was very useful to be warned to bring void orbs and MP restore items for hanging gardens / final campaign boss, it helped a ton. Anything like that for POTD? I don't want to find, idk, 88 floors in, that I'm missing a crucial item that makes the whole thing much easier (or is literally necessary).

I plan to go slowly, no auto-battle (I like to play a map or two per day to chill) and farm all the good equips. I've been to CODA and farmed San Bronsa, just never killed Nybeth so next step is worlding to chapter 4 and clearing POTD. I hope with lvl2 summons from San Bronsa it'll be a stroll, but it doesn't hurt to be extra prepared, so I thought I'll ask.

Similarly, should I train / reclass anyone besides having a roster of shamans, white knights, dragoons, valkyries and special characters? I've already recruited everyone except Warren and Lanselot since they require POTD clear first. Ngl no clue what I'm gonna do with those 2 as at that point the only content left only utilizes the main trio?

Final question, am I thinking this right if I did NOT do POTD so far, that I need to world to Heim (it's a law/Princess anchor), do POTD, do Hanging Gardens, do CODA1, then do CODA2/Warren quest/Blackmoor in one big sweep without veering off the course? Don't wanna break anything.

Tactics Ogre Weapons question

Reborn: why does switching from Damascus +1 1H sword to Dragon Fang dagger give Azelstan +27 attack, but Vyce gets -10? Neither has any dagger skills and both have sword skill in the 30s. Same weapons, VERY different outcomes. Why?

Tactics Ogre Need help understanding world tarot

I had stopped playing this years ago bc it felt like a slog(battles take 30mins) but recently found the time to come back and push my way through. I am trying to understand how the world tarot works if I want to do the end game stuff(CODA).

My first playthrough was on Neutral route. I did Lord, Fortresses, no PoTD though. I want to go back and recruit everyone and get Princess. I am currently on the Chaos route and got Cressida. What would be the best way to proceed? Should I beat PotD first and then get Princess for the anchor point, would this save my potd progress? Would I need to beat potd and then beat the last boss again?

I don’t know how going back and forth works. Could I first fast forward back to Coda, do Coda1 and recruit Iuria, then go back to the anchor point b4 Catiua, do potd, and then get princess, then fast forward to the end and do Coda 2, then go back again to do Law path and beat the game with princess to do coda 3 and 4? Just wondering how this works.

Tactics Ogre Denam Lord build for a tank

Reborn. Though I'd ask here since you guys are so great with your responses. What 4 skills do I use for the Lord build. Right now I have sword skill (Although maybe I should be using hammers? Everyone seems to prefer those...), phalanx 3, meditate 4, and the last one is the problem. I alternate between pincer 4 and recruiting skills (or sometimes others situationally), but I feel I'm missing something better. Any advice? I got the shaman and just reached union level 40. About to do POTD.

Tactics Ogre Why does my gryphon get MP so quickly?

Tactics Ogre Why do weapons with the better stats sometimes bring the attack down?

As the title says. I'm playing Reborn. One example I encountered yesterday is with Arycelle. Damascus Bow +1 has a higher attack than Siege Bow +1, yet when I switched, her attack dropped a bit. Are there some hidden stats at play?

Tactics Ogre Apocrypha schmapocrypha

Playing Reborn and I just don't get it. Abuna Mrueva seemed so freaked out. For what? I finally got the lightning apocrypha spell and I know it's just tier 1 and they get better, but this isn't even as good as thunder flare 2. What gives? Am I missing something? How do I get the really good spells? Also, how do I get a ring of the dead?
