Charles Security/Lack of Study Space
It's weird to see Temple publicly emphasize people living on/around campus, being involved on campus, etc while also steadily restricting access to their spaces. Watching a wave of like 50+ people get kicked out of Charles at 5 PM on a Saturday is especially sad because you know every other building on campus will have the same reactive and short-fused security people. When I visit friends who go to other schools it's so jarring seeing how they have spaces that are consistently accessible and don't make you feel like you're constantly being surveilled. Like at a certain point you become so obsessed with controlling entrances and seating areas that the University of it all gets lost

There is 24/7 study space in Charles. It’s on the other side of the first floor. The side that has the cafe. It’s always open. You just have to swipe in with your ID.

I've used the 24 hour lunch tables before but I have a laptop with an awful battery so the lack of usable outlets makes it a no-go for me. The amount of familiar faces walking away from Charles after security kicked us out tells me that many students probably also feel negatively about that space being the only option.

are there really no outlets in the 24/7 space? its been a few years since i’ve used it ofc

There are like maybe 8 total on the floor but they're like in a porthole that makes anything bulkier than a phone charger impossible to plug into it. There are maybe a few wall ones in the cove by Stella's but a lot of times they'll rope that area off or chastise you for setting up over there. Rlly insufficient even at the most generous headcount

When you go into the 24 hour area, theres a kiosk with charger packs over by the bathrooms and print station. They have USB-A, USB-C, and a proper outlet on them.
You can use the for free for up to 5 hours, but as long as you put it back before the 5 hours are up, you can take another one out with a fresh 5 hour time limit

There are outlets. Look on the floor under the tables. Should be something you can open and the outlets are sunken in.
Sadly, I believe the only other place would be the computer lab in the Tech Center, but they close at 5 on Saturday as well, I think. Late hours were a thing at some point but haven’t been in the last couple of years.
Once upon a time Speakman was open late. Don’t know if that was just for Business students or not. Try tapping your ID and see what happens.

Entire school is a joke. It actively wants to keep students out of buildings.

Well since it’s the semester now, Charles during the week is open til 2am on the non-24 hr side which is actually good for most people. But yeah I totally get what you mean about the wave of people getting kicked out at 5pm on a Saturday. I find that annoying especially if it’s not during the semester

it's probably because of staffing cutbacks. to operate a building longer than 8-5 means you need to staff it.

charles as a whole is a joke, paley lib was the best and had 24/7 access
