u/lsdisciple 1d ago

Honestly at that speed you wanna fall like that. Putting your hands out to stop yourself only breaks your wrists.. and then you still slam on your body. That guy knew how to fall. Tuck and roll and try and slide into it if you can reducing the initial gravity weight. That guy basically did the laying down of a motorcycle version of skateboarding bail.

36

u/MFDOOMscrolling 23h ago

lol he literally did the perfect tuck and roll without tucking or rolling in the name of beer 😂

22

u/lsdisciple 23h ago

Yuuup lol As a hobby brewer and skater, I can solidly say this guys got my respect 🫡

10

u/CampAstoria 20h ago

He got himself out of the brutal pile up without hurting anyone else or making things worse, and without hurting the beer. Awesomely helpful bail

9

u/light_to_shaddow 21h ago

Given that fallings the ideal, what's the official skater position on helmets?

Better or worse than a beeney hat?

My brother once fell off a deck and didn't spill a drop of his beer. Lol

5

u/Church6633 1d ago

One thing I've learned about holding a beer, is it is always protected when one falls. Kind of like the cameraman always lives.

Who could have foreseen this?!

17

u/jaxxon 1d ago

"NO WAAAAYYYY!!!" ... like, really? There's no way such idiocy could result in injury (or death?).

This is like a "cooler" version of those street takeover videos. Equally as stupid, but skate rat people ...so, cool?

Now I'm wondering about other groups and similar stupidity, realizing that it's wildly common that stupid humans get together in groups and do stupid things.

No way!

3

u/Fine_Marsupial_2964 22h ago

It’s group stupid

5

u/toopc 21h ago

Equally as stupid [as a street takeover]

It's not that stupid. Cops aren't going to show up and arrest you, bystanders aren't hurt or killed, and the public isn't inconvenienced. This is about as stupid as someone getting a concussion while playing football.

I've skateboarded down hills like that before, difference was I had plenty of room. Room to power slide, room to see and avoid obstacles. I still fell, it still hurt, but that's part of skateboarding.

6

u/saladmunch2 20h ago

And 96% of the vehicles probably weren't stolen 3 hours before this.

29

u/johnsonfromsconsin 1d ago

I became one after seeing brain come out of a head after a guy went into gravel and fell off his motorcycle at like 10 miles an hour.

10

u/zorbat5 1d ago

I used to hate helmets when I rode my commuter bicycle. Then my aunt died a couple years ago by falling on her head. 3 weeks ago I got a road bike and felt I needed a helmet as those things reward going fast, glad I did as 40kph is no joke.

14

u/kasst_kast 1d ago

Me neither but at an event like this I would assume it was standard. Mandatory even. But no, apparently not.

12

u/ledgeitpro 1d ago

Street skating and helmets have surprisingly never really been a thing, even the best skaters say no to helmets. I dont get it but it do be like that

13

u/TazBaz 23h ago

Tony Hawk tried to set the example but it didn’t stick with the “too cool for school” kids

Crazy. I got absolutely ridiculed by snow kiddos last time I was on a mountain:

“HELMET ON, OLD MAN!!”

“PROTECT YOUR HEAD, IDIOT!!”

Also towards my wife.

I guess these skaters haven’t got the memo yet

96

u/MeisterX 1d ago

Some lady was at an ice rink where I was teaching my daughter and I tried really kindly to suggest she wear a helmet. She was kinda rude about it so I let it go obviously.

She ate it not 30 seconds later CRACK...

I mean seriously it's the easiest thing.

u/CariniFluff 1d ago edited 1d ago

I was snowboarding about 10 years ago (mid 30s at the time) and ate it while we were racing to the bottom to take a break and get food/beer. I hit my head so hard I was puking the rest of the day and was still seeing three traffic lights where there was only one on the drive home. In hindsight I probably should have gone to get a CT scan or something, but either way, I'm never riding without a helmet again. It probably saved my life two winters ago when I had to bail because someone was crashed on the otherside of a jump (had been laying there for so long that no one knew they were there) and ended up going into the trees to avoid him.

Wear your helmets guys and girls. It's not cool to ride or skate without one.

21

u/MisterDonkey 1d ago

It's cool enough riding without a helmet.

But it's severely uncool to be drooling on yourself and needing diaper changes for the rest of your life.

So I like the helmet option.

4

u/babyBear83 19h ago

Why have skateboarders still not embraced the helmet as important and not lame?
I feel like snowboarding used to be like that but then pretty much everyone wised up.

135

u/csbsju_guyyy 1d ago

You have Tony Hawk that is arguably the GOAT skateboarder and he consistently wore (and wears?) tons of gear. Why these mental giants don't try to emulate him makes me think they all already have brain damage

60

u/WeirdURL 1d ago

Vert skaters (like Tony Hawk) have always worn gear. Street skaters for the most part don’t whether you agree with it or not. There is one street skater who is famous and wears helmets. Not everyone who takes risks is brain damaged or stupid.

23

u/porterglass 1d ago

That’s true. It kinda makes sense if you’re just hitting a small street spot. Doing this without seems crazy but I was dumb as a teenager as well.

11

u/WeirdURL 1d ago

Yea, with bombing hills you’re definitely safer with a helmet lol.

u/FunkyFresh707 1d ago

13

u/rowpdx 1d ago

It's actually more comfortable to wear a helmet while snowboarding (as opposed to just a hat). It keeps your head warm and holds your goggles so that they're not squeezing your head. It's a much better windbreaker than a hat. I used to ride without a helmet but was instantly converted when I tried one on for the first time.

u/OpeningZebra1670 20h ago

The guy with the ski hat, energy drink, and skateboard is on his way to the guy calling for a medic. Everything will be ok!

3

u/inbetweenoverunder 16h ago

Everyone keeps hating on them for not wearing helmets like oh they’re too cool for it blah blah blah yet the event itself, tick ditch death race, is historically helmetless. That’s the point. I mean it’s not very intelligent and it almost flagrant in its disregard for human life but like that’s what it’s all about man. Skate or die man. Skate AND die man, it’s all rolled into one, rolled like your battered body

4

u/CBRyder929 11h ago

No way? They’re going down a long hill increasing speed with no way to slow down effectively and no one is wearing any protection. This is expected and so predictable.

3

3

u/hernandezam207 1d ago

7

u/GrandmaJR 1d ago

What the helmet?!

4

u/Hairy_is_the_Hirsute 1d ago

When I snowboarded I would always wear a helmet. Other "knuckle draggers" would snicker and whatnot, but I didn't care.

Then, I went with a friend on a night that didn't have the best conditions. The fried was not wearing a helmet bc it didn't match their "fit". Friend's dad had driven us there. First lift ride to the top, and there was a patch of ice at the dismount... Well, both of us went down and smacked the back of our heads. Guess who wanted to go home right away, and guess who had a headache but no head injury?

9

u/xenobit_pendragon 1d ago

If you had a headache you probably did have a head injury. Helmets are great but smacking your head hard on ice doesn't stop your brain from bouncing around in your gourd. Glad it wasn't worse for either of you though.

4

u/darticuss 1d ago

And I can only count 1 safety beanie hat

6

u/FluffyDiscipline 1d ago
