Chief Justice John Roberts just told the country that President Trump's White House ballroom construction is "likely unlawful" and the Supreme Court let the bulldozers keep running anyway.

In a 5-4 order issued Monday, the Court's conservative majority allowed construction to continue on the $400 million ballroom, built on the site of the demolished East Wing. The majority sided with the Trump administration on narrow grounds, finding the National Trust for Historic Preservation likely lacks legal standing to challenge the project in federal court.

But Roberts broke from his five Republican-appointed colleagues, joining Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson in dissent. The National Trust's lawsuit, filed in December, argues the Trump administration violated federal law by moving forward without congressional approval and without submitting plans to the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts.

Roberts invoked Winston Churchill's warning that our buildings shape us in turn, then added that this is exactly why the people responsible for the White House must follow the rules governing what gets torn down and built at what he called the People's House.

This fight is far from over. A federal judge had already blocked above-ground construction, and an appeals court upheld that order, citing the missing congressional authorization. Monday's ruling does not resolve whether the ballroom project is actually lawful; it only lets construction continue while litigation drags on in the lower courts.

The Trump administration has cut down more than 60 trees at East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., according to a Washington Post report published Friday, months before formal approval for the site's planned renovation.

President Trump had said the overhaul of the public golf course would begin September 1. East Potomac Park is home to numerous historic cherry trees and sycamores, including some of the oldest surviving specimens gifted to the U.S. from Japan in the early 1900s.

Preservationists are suing to halt the project, arguing it violates an 1897 congressional act that designated East Potomac Park for the "recreation and pleasure of the people."

In May, U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes verbally instructed government attorneys that she wanted advance notice before more than 10 trees were removed or heavy machinery brought onto the site. That instruction was never entered as a formal written order.

According to an anonymous source cited by the Post, the government has not notified either the plaintiffs or the court about the recent removals.

In a joint filing submitted Friday, Justice Department attorneys stated that no final agency action has taken place and that several public-facing procedural steps remain before any redesign can proceed. Lawyers representing the preservationists have disputed that characterization.

One of the felled trees stood near the golf course's 14th green. Its removal has heightened concern among community members and preservation advocates about the fate of the park's older trees as the September deadline approaches without a finalized construction plan, cost estimate, or completed environmental review.

More than 1.2 million Texas voters, over six percent of the state's registered voters, now sit on the state's suspended voter list less than three months before a pivotal November election, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Suspended status means a county believes a voter's address is outdated or that the person has moved. It does not automatically strike someone from the rolls, and suspended voters can still cast a ballot, but they face extra hurdles. At the polls, they must fill out a "statement of residence" form, and if they've relocated to a new county, they either have to return to vote where they're still registered or accept a provisional ballot that may ultimately not count.

The suspensions stretch across the state and hit some of Texas's biggest counties hardest. Dallas County alone has more than 129,000 suspended voters, Tarrant County has over 73,000, and Collin and Denton counties each have roughly 56,000.

Voters have until October 5 to correct their registration, but with more than a million people affected, many may never get the message in time, especially those who don't realize their address is on file incorrectly.

The timing raises the stakes further. Texas is cooperating with the Trump administration's push to gain access to state voter rolls, a move that has alarmed voting rights advocates already concerned about ballot access. The suspended-voter numbers also land in the middle of a closely watched U.S. Senate race between Democratic state Representative James Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
