the mentality is called social darwinism. and it's incredibly stupid.
if you want your body to be strong what do you do? you pick up heavy things, right? you nourish yourself with sleep and food.
well, apply that to society. society will get a lot stronger by carrying each other and nourishing each other than we ever could by stepping over each other and starving each other.

u/mywifesoldestchild 10d ago
This also ties to the thought problems we have in our society of The Just World Fallacy, where there is a functioning karma system and if youâre doing well itâs because you have earned it, along with the specific Christian implementation of this through Prosperity Gospel.
2
u/grittyshrimps 10d ago
To clarify, social darwinism usually describes arguments that the wealthy and elite are more "fit" and therefore more deserving to pass on genes. It is typically used to justify--or worse, promote--inequality.

"has to raise prices" no they don't. This is the entire problem. We've been programmed to think that businesses making billions in profit can't afford to pay staff properly without raising prices. This is just a false defence for greed.
This profit chasing model the world has adopted is delusional. There is no such thing as infinite growth since there is a ceiling. An economic model that tries to break that ceiling ends up eating itself alive because the only way to then increase profit margins is to make cuts. Cuts to staff, cuts to material quality, cuts to quantity, cuts to wages, cuts to regulation, and so on. Does any of this sound familiar? Most if not all major corporations are in this broken ceiling phase of life and it is unsustainable against the confines of making annual gains.
McDonalds can afford it. They CHOOSE not to. Oil companies can afford keep costs low. They CHOOSE not to. Food store can afford to keep food prices down. They CHOOSE not to. All these businesses that have "had to raise prices" are all making record profits. That doesn't happen of they genuinly had to raise prices to offset costs.

And if the lowest paid worker at McDonaldâs had been given the same raises that all of upper management received over the past 20 years, that McDonaldâs hamburger flipper would be starting out at $48,000 a year.

You have to regulate corporations from price gouging. Raise their pay to a livable wage, and wait to see what happens with prices everywhere once it happens. Because companies just raise prices to keep their 10-15% profit margins. Regulations are needed so the top 25% do not hoard all the money.
Greed and capitalism is why your fast food job canât pay the rent. Not because of how much you make.

I've had this exact conversation with people.
Let's say I'm too dumb to get a well paying job. No other excuse. Just literally my brain only allows me to process enough that I can stack supermarket shelves and tidy up shopping carts in the car park.
If that is all I am capable of, do I deserve to be punished with a low wage that I can barely subsist on, or should I be paid enough that I can still enjoy my existence? If it's the former, then what's the point of existing if it's just to stack shelves and push carts around?

I agree. I got laid off last year and before I got another job I started door dashing. I donât eat fast food so Iâd never see what I saw usually but after door dashing, I realized the people that work in fast food work their freaking arses off. Especially nowadays with a decent percent of orders being online. Instead of a car full of teens with the munchies going to get food at a drive through, kids just hangout at a friends and order a ridiculous amount of food. Imagine working in fast food preparing huge online orders over and over and over every shift. Not worth the pay.

u/Next-Pumpkin-654 11d ago
It's more predictive than prescriptive.
I would like people who are working the lowest paying jobs available to be able to afford everything they need to, but given the variance of what people need/want and the known variable of their pay being far below the average, it's not really a surprise to hear that many of those people struggle. It's predictable, even if we actively wish for a different outcome.
And I don't think that's easily solved. Prices are representations of human costs. You work to earn money to trade with other people who work in exchange for that money. It's an asynchronous, decentralized (to an extent) system of cooperation. You can't just wish that things cost less anymore than you can manifest an eight hour shift to actually only take four hours.

Being able to afford that isnt the point of one job. Its to make money and learn a skill. There are jobs that are probably better for kids as their first job living with their parents. Paying for some things. But you shouldn't be expecting to afford all of that with an entry level job.

Flipping burgers at McDonald's is not meant to be a career. It's meant to be a stepping stone. Moreover, raising the wage is not the answer but rather bringing down the cost. You don't need to increase wage to match inflation. You need to manage inflation to match wage and the actual cost of things.

Im not opposed to the minimum wage going up but every wage needs to also go up. However, all wages would need to increase as well seeing a lot of jobs that do pay, require skills and knowledge.

No, it's not. If you can make an actual adult living wage in an entry level unskilled job, why learn a trade at all? No more 4 year plumbing schools, no electricians, welders, carpenters , computer repair, mechanics, no one to repair city infrastructure, the list is endless. This, as Socialism ALWAYS does, rewards the lowest denominator while punishing initiative. History repeats. Again.
1
u/BlackberryAny6686 5d ago
Why learn a trade at all? Because you benefit more from it? No one is being "punished" by ensuring people have the basics for survival in full-time work. McDonalds is a multi-billion dollar company because of these workers. Without them, it wpuld be nothing, yet despite this they recieve none of the benefits from said growth or success. This same problem exists across the board, and yes, even in more "skilled" professions. Workers always get shafted in favour of executives and shareholders. No businesses, especially those of such huge wealth, should be paying anyone less than what's required for basic living.
To say that ensuring fair pay means those in other professions get punished is the most ridiculous take I've ever seen on this topic. How shallow minded does someone have to be to think this wouldn't benefit everyone in every profession? Stop licking the boots of those who would throw you to the wolves for an extra buck.
