Season 5 "Hate to be the one to break this to you, dad, but there's nothing that you can do for us"

It's a gut punch everytime I see this episode and Charlotte delivers this line. I remember watching it for the first time when it aired, and by then we're all really invested in Jane's pursuit of Red John. Every week cheering him on so he can catch the guy who killed his family. Then his "daughter" shows up with the brutal truth:

"Hate to be the one to break this to you, dad, but there's nothing that you can do for us. We don't give a damn what happens to Red John. I mean, we're dead. Gone."

The look on Jane's face is just heartbreaking

Announcement New Rule: No Personal Viewing Decision Posts

As our community expands and trends on Reddit evolve, so must our rules. As of today, we will no longer be allowing people to post asking for input on their personal viewing decisions. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • I got spoiled on Red John. Should I keep watching?
  • I'm bored in Season 2, does this get better?
  • Should I watch only Red John episodes?
  • Can I skip filler episodes?
  • Why is this show the same thing every week? Should I keep going?

The bottom line is, this is a community of Mentalist fans. We're here to discuss the show, not defend the format of a long-form police procedural from a different era of TV, nor are we here to convince you to keep going. Watch it or don't. There's no need to inform us either way.

You are in control of what you watch. Is the show boring you? Watch something else. Do you only want to watch the Red John stuff? Follow our watch guide. Should you keep going after Point X? Make that decision for yourself. Search the sub if you have to, but don't post asking for us to convince you. Our answer will always be yes, watch the whole thing.

However, if you finished the show and have thoughts? Feel free to share those!

Thank you.

Cho Business Tim Kang / Kimball Cho was leg-en-dary

I know a lot of appreciation goes in for Simon Baker and Robin Tunney but I felt Tim Kang who played Kimball Cho totally raised the bar. He was amazing in CBI but was even better in FBI. The fact that they didn't show too much of his personal life kept some sort of mystery about him - which Tim exploited to the max in his portrayal of Cho.

Red John I recommend the mentalist and now I regret it

I recommended*

I'm concerned about something, a family member asked me about the mentalist and I highly praised it so they decided to watch it. What I didn't expect is how invested they seem to be in trying to figure out who red john is and keep sending me their theories and pictures of characters, and I can't help but feel like they'll be very disappointed.. I love this show but that reveal did come out of nowhere tbh, so how could I console them when the time comes? Or defend my recommendation :')

Jisbon It’s never really about how expensive the gift is. ❤️ Spoiler

It’s about the thought behind it,
the person who gave it,
and the love they put into that little gesture. Sometimes the smallest gift from the right person can mean more than the most expensive thing in the world. Because in the end, we don’t remember the price, we remember how loved we felt.

General Discussion Abbott and Cho, From this to this! Spoiler

I liked how cho and abbott 's relationship developed over time. I mean when Abbott first get introduced i really hated him. Former CBI team also doesn't like him. But gradually Abbott earned respect from every single one of them. I really thought we don't talk that much about Abbott and Cho.

Not anyone can earned respect from CHO.

Mentalist the ending *spoilers* Spoiler

Hey. So I just finished final episode of mentalist. If I am speaking from heart, show has some flaws. From S1-S6 show is kinda repetitive especially in CBI with murder cases and some would say red Jhon reveal wasn't the greatest. BUT, the final episode just touches your heart. Patrick and Lisbon finally getting married is maybe the best things I ever saw. The final scene is so touchy. Van pelt, Rigsby, FBI unit it's so emotional.(HM to JJ Laroche wished he was there). And finding out Lisbon is pregnant and seeing happiness in Jane's eyes knowing he will be dad again is just amazing. I feel so fucking proud and happy for them. Although everything is fiction and not real, writers really did an amazing job connecting characters with an audience. Overall it's an amazing show with perfect ending and I am really glad that I watched it. This is my opinion would like to hear yours in comments.

General Discussion Van Pelt backstory?

Upvotes

I have completed watching season 4 and absolutely love this series.

One type of plot I like a lot is when past cases or backstories of characters come to haunt the agents in a current case.

Cho: his affiliations to Avon park boys

Rigsby: his criminal dad

Lisbon: The one where she gets accused of murder and her brother getting involved in a case

Jane: Red john obviously

I can't help but feel like Van Pelt is done dirty (up until this point of the series) because we haven't had an entire episode about her past or just one where she's central to a crime that was committed. The only thing she has been centred towards was shooting her fiance

Is there a Van Pelt backstory or a deep dive in her past coming up? Or will she remain a bit part main character compared to the others?

General Discussion Every episode i watch I can't help but think Jane resembles Dr. House in so many ways 😭Does anyone else think so too?

It's like Jane is a more docile and less of a jerk compared to House but still there's SO many similarities between them 😭😭 I wish there was a crossover episode between the two shows at some point. It would've been EPIC lmao.

Red John Jane's list oversight Spoiler

Thumbnail tiktok.com
14 Upvotes

Jane could have filtered his list more by including the description of Red John from Rosalind Harker. She said he was:

  • under six feet tall
  • not muscular but not soft
  • short straight hair
  • gentle voice
  • rough strong hands
  • smelled of pine and nails and earth

Certainly Reede Smith could have been excluded. His body is a bit soft.

I doubt Brett Partridge had rough strong hands.

I doubt Bertram or Stiles smelled like pine or earth.

Jane should have used this and reduced the list to: McAllister, Haffner, or Kirkland.

Update -

Soft straight hair should have excluded Bertram.

That left McAllister and Kirkland. Both did smell like pine and earth. McAllister spent his days in the Napa woods. Kirkland had that house in the woods as well.

Season 7 Am I the only one that thinks this?

The mentalist is my go to re-run, mainly because I like a who dunnit. Does anyone find that season 7 mainly shows who did it before Jane finds out in the end? The only reason I watch s7 is for Jane and Lisbon’s relationship but even that was dull. But the WHO DUNNIT was definitely lacking.

Anyone else? X

Season 5 Why was Jason Lennon killed? Spoiler

I'm doing my first rewatch of the series and got to the point when Bob Kirkland kills Jason Lennon in S5E18 Behind the Red Curtain. All of his behaviour until the point has been consistent with him hunting Red John to avenge the murder of his twin brother. But I don't understand why he would kill Jason Lennon.

My understanding of him asking "do you recognise me" is he's actually asking if the person knew his twin brother and might have been involved in his death. But regardless of whether Lennon was involved in killing Kirkland's twin, he's still a valuable witness. Lennon could reveal who Red John is, surely Kirkland would want to interrogate him properly and get that information?

Is this murder ever explained? I've watched the whole series before, but can't remember anything that makes sense, nor can I find anything on the wiki.

P.S. hopefully the title satisfies the no spoiler rule. I was originally going to title it "Why did Robert Kirkland kill Jason Lennon?" But figured anything to do with Bob Kirkland counts as a major spoiler.

General Discussion Lisbon always knows when Jane is about to do something stupid.

Post image
670 Upvotes

There are so many scenes where Jane starts wandering off or says something suspiciously casual and Lisbon immediately looks annoyed before he has even explained himself. It's especially funny early on because she doesn't always know what he's planning she just knows that whenever Jane suddenly gets cheerful, her day is about to get worse.

Season 2 Just finished season 2 and wow Spoiler

So uh wow the “psychic” girl was a complete ass in this episode and I’m REALLY hoping red John just killed her and she isn’t working with him like the secretary was, the fact that red John’s first on screen appearance was saving Jane was very shocking I love the design of the disguise I think I liked season one’s ending a bit more though, do to how much closer to catching red John it felt and having Jane be the one to kill his best lead of catching him but yeah this episode was great.

General Discussion How do I get Jane-level observation skills

As a young inspiring scholar I’ve been thinking how neat I would be to have the skills of Jane. The way he can read social queues and tell who people really are. do any of you fine people know ways to build that skill?
