Crossroads Chapter 2: Meanwhile…
Once upon a time the bridge after cordon was manned by military. Now it lay abandoned, somehow even more overgrown and rundown. Any semblance of a camp was gone, both military and other stalker factions not finding the area to be worth trying to secure. Bandits at one point had tried to run their own extortion similar to the military, but others had simply went around and eventually the bandits had enough of being shot at and gave the area up.
Petrol and Simmone were thankful for this, their walk through Cordon being relatively uneventful. At one point some nearby dogs had turned to them, but after a cursory sniff, the dogs had decided the two were not worth the effort. Lucky them.
Anomalies littered the road that used to be a clear route to the checkpoint ahead, but again they passed this area with ease, Petrol having learnt the location of these new anomalies like the back of his hand.
They passed the checkpoint into the ‘Lesser Zone’, where things would get decidedly more interesting. After Strelok’s…endeavours, the zone had changed. Changed in a way that made no logical sense. That being said, the zone did not care about logic. In place of where garbage used to be now sat an entire extra amount of land, that later was dubbed the ‘Lesser Zone’. Garbage was still around, ahead of this area, but an entire area spawning into existence like this broke any understanding of reality, logic or physics. And yet nonetheless Petrol and Simmone walked through the area, the reality of their feet squelching against the mud of this area proving it was indeed real.
“This place used to not exist, crazy huh?” Petrol piped up.
“What do you mean?” Replied Simmone.
“You see those broken vehicles in the distance?”
Simmone squinted, just barely making out the specs in the horizon Petrol was talking about.
“Yeah I see them, why?”
“They used to be about fifty meters away…”
Simmone stopped walking and looked at Petrol with a very confused look.
“Huh?”
“Yeah…this whole area we are walking on used to not exist. Garbage was closer than it is now.”
“You mean to tell me a whole new part of the zone, and by extension the entire planet, just popped into existence?” Simmone spluttered incredulously.
“More than that,” Petrol continued, “Old areas became new, new areas became old. Some old areas simply ceased to exist and some new ones popped into existence. Makes zero fucking sense…but I saw it with my own eyes. Hell, some people simply…vanished.”
“Explains a lot…” Simmone muttered.
“Explains what?” Petrol asked.
“The rest of the world…or as I should call it now that I’m a stalker…the mainland, had an earthquake, that was in the news for affecting the whole planet at the same time.”
“No shit? That’s pretty insane.”
“You’re telling me, and you’re just casually dropping that it happened here like it’s nothing…”
They continued walking, Simmone lost deep in thought about what Petrol had revealed. Petrol had these thoughts too, at least before he discarded them in favour of survival. He was no scientist and he had learnt long ago, the zone did not care what you thought about it.
Petrol had devised a route following close to the water, he could see the abandoned ‘Noontide’ base. Poor fuckers, Petrol thought to himself. Almost had their own lives again and then others had to fuck it up for them. Probably another SIRCAA idea, Petrol thought to himself. Would make sense, since Ward had claimed the place as their own. The other factions knew better than to fight Ward on such claims.
If they followed the waterline they should mostly just run into fauna, but hopefully no other stalkers. That hope was quickly dashed as Simmone quietly stopped and pulled Petrol aside into some rocks and foliage.
“Movement.”
Petrol looked in bewilderment, spotting nothing, until eventually seeing two other stalkers walking about near the shoreline themselves, searching for something between the mud and sand. They let the two men pass, mercifully avoiding being spotted in the pitiful hiding spot they had quickly found. Shooting them would have been a stain on their conscience if they were good men, revealing themselves would have been a problem if they were bad men. In the zone, it was best not take chances.
The duo continued after their tense encounter, continuing along the waterline until it curved away from them, the duo splitting off to continue north. The last hurdle lay ahead, the Northern Checkpoint. Much like the old Northern Checkpoint that used to be inhabited at the north of Cordon, the Bandits had grown a particular fondness to this area, chagrin many a bright eyed stalker a few thousand rubles to cross into Garbage. The other alternatives were massive detours far more dangerous and thus many stalkers simply coughed up the money and the bandits grew more and more rich. The exceptions were the military and Ward, who the bandits had cleverly kept the area ‘clear’ for them. As a result, military and Ward had a safe way to go in and out of the areas of Garbage and Dark Valley as they pleased and the bandits had a tidy little business set up.
“Right Simonne. Here’s the fun part where you tell me you really want to do this whole going deeper into the zone thing. After this we do not turn back.”
I already told you I do, I’m not sitting around Cordon for the rest of my life, even if we are broke bums further north, we will be broke bums with more than a kilometer of space to explore.”
“Well,” Petrol began, “Prepare to be an even more broke bum. Bandits own the checkpoint up ahead and it is quite literally the only way to garbage if we do not want to take one of two extremely dangerous and lenghty detours that we do not have the skills, ammo or manpower for.”
Simmone thought for a moment, before replying calmly to Petrol. “How much will they want?”
“Well they’re clever. They won’t rob us blind because they know it’s easier and more profitable to be moderate about it. Still, really depends on what they want from us.”
Simmone thought for a moment longer before shrugging. “Well then, we give them what they want and we better make ourselves useful once we hit garbage.”
Petrol sighed, closing his eyes for a moment. He knew this would be the answer, there was no point being hesitant.
“Fuck it then, follow my lead.”
The two men approached the checkpoint, guns holstered and a relaxed stance to the bandits guarding the area.
“We pay you and can go through yeah?” Simmone yelled out.
A bandit simply motioned the two over, allowing them to get touching distance before he spoke up. “Open your bags. We will see what you have, take a fair payment, and you can get on your way.”
Businesslike. Procedural. Almost professional. It was truly bizarre to see how much the bandits had moved away from skirmishes and murder to much more organised endeavours. The two men handed their bags to the bandit, who looked through both before taking out a variety of items and handing the bags off.
“Go on then.”
The duo did not need to be told twice, walking past the gaze of many armed bandits as they walked through the checkpoint. The single minute felt simultaneously instant and painstakingly long, the duo finally feeling a sense of relief as they carefully crossed the broken bridge into garbage and left the checkpoint behind.
“Here we are Simmone…garbage. Well…technically dark valley.”
“Dark valley?” Simmone asked.
“Yeah…used to be two separate areas before the major emission changed the zone as I told you earlier. Now the areas have all changed location slightly. It’s all considered garbage now, on account of Ward, bandits and free stalkers essentially sharing ownership of it. We will follow the road to the left here, it will lead us to the hangar and the flea market. If nobody has jobs there then we will go to the new Ward guarded base.”
“Didn’t we just avoid a Ward base?” Simmone asked.
“That was the old Noontide base, that one is off limits. This is more a big base where everyone can get together, do business, so on and so forth. I guess Ward likes having somewhere where they can conveniently find plenty of stalkers to give jobs to without risking their own men, or some sort of ‘quarantine’ to keep an eye on us locals…probably both.”
“Fair enough.”
The duo walked by a few old rusted vehicles, before seeing a patch of rusted helicopters and vehicles to their left. The telltale signs of anomalies littered the abandoned scrapyard.
“People used to risk life and limb in that area finding low level artifacts every time an emission hit.” Petrol advised.
“Why did they stop?” Simmone asked.
“Been far less emissions for a while now.” Petrol replied. “And every time there has been, that area has been a complete minefield. Only a desperate stalker would try to find a low level artifact among that death field these days. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze.”
The two men continued, walking into the hangar not far past the scrapyard and being greeted by two guards on the balcony.
“Free stalkers?” One of the guards called out.
“Yeah…we are looking for work.” Petrol called out.
“No chance.” The guard replied. “No work at Flea Market either. You’ll need to go the slag heap base.”
“Thanks for the heads up.”
Petrol looked at Simmone. “Well…onward we go.”
The two had been walking for what felt like forever and yet it would barely have been late morning. They continued past the flea market. They had nothing worth buying or selling at this point, the bandits leaving them with some food, a magazine of ammo each in their guns and a single medkit between them. It did not help that both guns they were carrying were mere pistols…at least they were good pistols. Petrol had managed to hang on to a CZ-82 for a long while. Cheap. Easy to maintain. Relatively effective. Plus ammo 9x18 ammo was easy to come by in the zone, unless travelling to where other stalkers were slightly…better armed. Petrol looked at what Simmone was carrying, a P99 Walther. Not a bad pistol either, although 9x19 was slightly harder to come by. At least until they got further into the more dangerous parts of the zone. Then again, Petrol figured that was Simmone’s intention, so maybe he had the better weapon after all. Still, a pistol in the zone was little more than an occasional tool and a comfort. It was fine for convincing other poor people not to rob you, or to shoot the occasional animal, but the duo would need proper gear.
“So Simmone…why did you come here anyway?”
“You want my backstory? We’ve known each other for four days.”
“Ok damn man, figured if we were gonna be partners we could be more open to each other. Thought you trusted me.”
“No Petrol, I saved your life, remember? You know you can trust me, the jury is still out on if I can trust you.”
“Harsh.” Petrol muttered.
“You’d be first to tell me not to be too trusting.” Simmone replied.
“Touche.”
The two men walked in silence before Petrol piped up, his curiosity getting the better of him.
“You at least gonna tell me how you brought a walther P99 into the zone?” Not an overly common pistol at the best of times.”
“It’s what the dealer had, so it’s what I bought.”
“Fair enough.”
Simmone had become more quiet and closed. Tense even. Petrol decided not to pry further. Many went to the zone to escape their past, who was he to judge whatever past Simmone had.
The duo eventually arrived at the slag heap base. Being ushered in and told not to cause any trouble by the Ward member guarding the gated entrance. They entered the building inside the perimeter, a refuge from the cold air outside. Stale alcohol, various foodstuffs and the smell of various unwashed bodies hit their nostrils as they sifted their way through the crowds in the building. Petrol guided them through the crowds and towards and old arms contact he had, he figured if anybody might have a job it would be him.
The duo walked up to a barred booth, a bored looking merchant not even looking up at them as they approached.
“Let me guess…you want work?” The merchant grumbled sarcastically.
“Would you give me work if it were me?” Petrol asked.
The merchant looked up after hearing the voice, surprise and then a grin landing on his face.
“Why didn’t you say it was you man?!” the merchant exclaimed. “Come through the side there, I may have something.”
The merchant unlocked the side gate, leading the two men into the rather cramped space at the back of the room.
“Not much, but enough for a private conversation…” The merchant said in a low tone. “Who’s your friend?”
“This is Simonne. Simonne, meet Huron.”
Simonne nodded at Huron, Huron declined to acknowledge him. “Can he be trusted.”
“He has literally saved my life Huron…and yes he can be discreet.”
Huron finally looked at Simonne, who locked eyes back, unflinching at the bandit trader’s judgment.
“You willing to get your hands dirty?” Huron asked.
“I’m in the fucking zone.” Simmone replied. “I expect it.”
Huron nodded. “Well if it is between you two or any of the other fucking backstabbing smoothbrains in here it will need to be you. You remember Diode down the hallway there?”
“The technician who filled the role of fixing things when I left?” Petrol asked.
“Yeah him…well recently that stupid fucker did everything the bandits want as per usual-”
“You’re a bandit too.” Petrol interrupted.
Huron stopped, glaring daggers at Petrol and allowing the silence to linger for an uncomfortably long time. “Petrol, if I wanted your fucking input I would’ve asked for it, now do you want this job or not?”
“Sorry man, go on.”
“As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted. With Diode being the bitch he is, he will do anything the bandits ask. Now I don’t necessarily want to off him as, credit where it is due, he is a very good technician, but I do need you tow to unfuck a situation of his doing.”
“Go on.”
“Diode, being the dumbfuck he is, decided to have absolutely zero qualms with helping another group of bandits make their PDA’s capable of knowing the location of other PDA users…you know, something we all deliberately stopped PDA’s being able to do for obvious reasons a long time ago. Well guess which dipshit courier still had the connectivity on their PDA enabled for others to be able to find them if say, a particularly motivated technician found a way to reverse engineer another PDA?”
“Your dipshit courier?”
“Yes, Petrol. MY dipshit courier. Now I’m down a small shipment of guns and ammo and there are bandits running out there with a PDA that can track other PDA’s. Basically makes them the masters of ambushing fuckers.”
“So what do you want from us?” Petrol asked.
“Well I’ve already told gearhead down the hall to never fucking do that again. Now I need you two to get my shipment back, kill the bandits who ambushed my courier and make sure that reverse engineered PDA gets back to me so nobody else can use it, understood?”
“And our reward?” Petrol asked.
“Anything you find on them that is not the shipment ammo or guns…or the PDA, is all yours. I’ll pay your rubles when you get back too.”
Petrol was about to leave, when Simmone piped up.
“Give us a list.”
“What?....I’ll tell you what is and is not mine when you bring it here smartass.”
Simmone held Huron’s gaze, not budging an inch. “No, you’ll give us a list, otherwise we both know you will claim more items were part of the shipment than actually were.”
Huron held his gaze for a few more moments before breaking into a dry chuckle. “Fuck, nothing gets by you huh? Fine, take this paper, it has the items I expect on it. The shipment will be between here and the old gas station east of the bandit base at the plant.”
“Hell of a large area where this shipment may be Huron.” Petrol said.
“And? Find it or don’t get paid. I didn’t say it was an easy job did I? Now go on, fuck off, I have business to do.”
The duo emerged from the base, the cold of the zone attempting to seep through their clothing again as they headed east to the areas formerly known as dark valley. Would they find their quarry in the first five minutes? Would they find them all the way at the bandit base? Who knew. Although Petrol had an uneasy feeling it may be the latter….
