Little warning: I feel a bit cranky because this comic really made me well, cranky as i feel i wasted my time on it so i made come across as a little cold compared to my review about the 2 cartoons.

Okay first off, i loved the 80's cartoon, i liked the 2011 one, and i loved the 80's comic volume i got laying here that i read before i sleep.
And second: If you loved this comic thats awesome, wish i liked it as well lol.
I got the 2024 comic and read it all (including Lost) within a week.
I have made a review of the 2 shows as well in another topic and it was way more positive than this topic is going to be and i hope this isn't a spam but this is the last review i'll do as there's nothing else i got on my Thundercat radar for now.

I also refrained myself from watching reviews on this comic as it would definintely cloud my own opinion on it. This is completely 100% my own blind new fan opinion.

The things i liked:

- Its more mature, grittier and edgier, i like that.
- Loads of cool action panels.
- How the Cat Lair was build is awesome and makes more sense this way (with the robo-bears helping out)
- A good explaination on why Lion-o grew older, because his tube malfunctionated instead of "somehow he grew older".
- I liked how Third World was a prison for the mutants and it felt more like a chaotic gang vs gang world, reminded me of Mad Max in a way.

The things i didn't like, sadly enough there's a lot:

- Lion-O... holy hell was this guy unlikable from #2 and beyond, what an ass and completely not what he was in the 80s cartoon/comic and 2011 where he was calm, friendly, heroic and just chill. In this comic he was such a jerk and stuck-up with his holier than thou attitude. In #25 it made me dislike him even more, totally unreasonable, unfit to be a leader if he can't keep his anger in check. And so much for his month journey on his own away from the Thundercats to "become more adult", he grew even worse instead!

- I didn't like how the Sword of Omens broke immideatly at the start only to finally come back at the end.

- Lion-o left the team waaayyy too early, i think #8 is when he got lost only to return way later near the end. He was barely even with the team throughout this comic.

- The story felt super rushed, a lot of things happend so quickly right after the other, it had no time to breath at all. Lion-o leaving quickly, mumm-ra dying quickly, the sword breaking quickly, new characters introduced at an insane pace, everything was done super quickly as if the deadline of the comic was closing in.

- The whole team felt as if they disliked eachother more than liked eachother... lots of arguing, lying to eachother and keeping secrets even fighting physically amongst eachother out of anger.
And what happened to Panthro? He was such a cranky jerk in this run, he was fun, loyal, had a goofy sense of humour in the 80s cartoon/80s comic.

- Lion-o and Calica... they barely knew eachother, then Calica betrayed them, then she returns and Lion-o and her kiss while knowing eachother for what, max 3 days with months gap inbetween? What.................? Yes she somehow got feelings for him which wasn't clear at all, and why would she even have it?

- Bengali... joined the team for a whole 2 issues, did nothing at all and then leaves and... yeah okay thats that i guess?
I expected the reason why he joins (from a writers point of view) was to fix the Sword of Omens as he did in the 80s cartoon, but no Bengali is useless and then Lion-o somehow fixed the Sword of Omens on his own which he could've done at the start? Its never explained.

- Mumm-ra... he was awesome but... he died way too early on in this run.

- What is the plot exactly? There's just things happening with no real payoff. It were random mini stories of 2 issues and then just emptiness, nothing really went anywhere. None of what happend even mattered, i felt i can just read the first 3 issues and then skip to the end and nothing really would change.

Issue 25... oh man, this is just beyond terrible, so bad i'll make a mini review underneat:

- Where are the backgrounds? It was just grey.

- Lion-o was a douchebag for no good reason, even moreso than he already was. He seemed as if Mumm-ra possessed him or something, it was so out of character even for this run.

- Lion-o's allies fighting him just because Jaga told them so, they didn't even TRY to reason with Jaga, no they just jumped at Lion-o without a second thought. Cheetara even stated they must do it because its Jaga who told them so and because he is above Lion-o's rank lol, yeah okay... no loyalty among friends i guess.

- Then Jaga just... kills himself? Why? How? By using a blast on everyone to... knock them away? Again, why? What is the purpose of that? And that now kills him? Then why even use the attack if it kills you? And why even use it when you forced Lion-o's allies to fight him 2 pages ago!? What was even the point then!?

- Jaga told Lion-o "You suck as a leader, you cannot be a leader, you are unworthy of the sword and title" all for him to randomly say, once dying, "You are indeed a leader son..." uh dude... what changed your mind? He fought to defend himself and... that somehow changed your mind? What!?

- Lion-o is mad at Jaga for all the lies, but in the end once Jaga was dying Lion-o was okay with the lies and it is completely ignored as if it never happend. THEN WHY GET MAD AT THE FIRST PLACE!? All this, this WHOLE ISSUE, could've been prevented then!

- The other cats who attacked Lion-o are now... somehow calm and never mention the attack again they don't even apolagize for it, infact they didn't even care Jaga died!! They just... stood there and went "Anyways, so what was the book of omens about Lion-o?".

Man this comic was horrible... had to power through it after #10, might as well since i started it and would've been a waste otherwise =/ This made me not want to buy Thundercats x Silverhawkes or the Mumm-Ra solo anymore.

Good thing is: I loved Thundercat Lost, this was just fun to read and see their struggle and how friendly they were together even during stress.

First off, i love the whole franchise so much i decided to buy the 80s comic volume part 1.

Okay now to the shows.

The Thundercats 80s show:
What i liked:
- It was great, the story arcs that are 5 episodes long were very good, way better than i expected of what ofcourse as any 80s show was: a toy commercial for 20 minutes. But those story arcs were amazing! Lion-o's Annointment was just awesome aswell as every other story arc at the start or ending of each season.

- The characters felt mature, cool and just all around badass.

- Mumm-ra, while kind of goofy in a scary way, was a massive sadist and a huge threat and wouldn't shy away from torture, which i didn't expect for a kids show.

- The side characters (Mandora, Snowman, Berbills etc) were awesome, some were badass while some were super friendly and cute.

- I liked most of the planet, the area's and races etc (this has a downside later)

- Lion-'s voice was awesome, then again all of their voices were awesome (more on this later). (I keep quoting 'thunder, thunder, thunder! Thundercats HOOO!' in my mind lol)

- The music was just all sorts of cool.

What i didn't like as much:

- The voice acting sometimes was beyond atrocious with some characters, sometimes i felt like skipping the episode because it was that bad. The maincast was fine but the secondary characters were sometimes awful. Mumm-ra also had a huge hit or miss, he sounded as if he thought this was a melodramatic Shakespear threatre play, it was sometimes laughable "MUMMMRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-AAaaaAaaaAAaaaHH WILL.... NAAWWWTTT.... TTAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKEEEEE........ NOooOOoooOoooOOoo FOR AN.......... AWNSOOoooOOoooOOooooRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

- The world, although fun, i didn't like how 90% of the critters/animals were just Earth animals we have (pigs, kangaroo's, pigeons, frogs). Third Earth was a new, strange planet yet the animals were all the animals we got in our own real life Earth... why not go fullon fantasy and make different animals?

- I felt most of the main characters, although cool, lacked any sort of personality. Some of them did though like Lion-o, he was honourbound, honourable, heroic and laughed in the face of danger and super curious about everything. But Cheetara... she was just... nice i guess? Then again non of these characters were assholes so... what makes Cheetara special? Tygra too, he was just there making blue prints 4 or 5 times in 130 episodes, thats his whole personality.
Panthro however had personality, he laughed at silly things, had a goofy sense of humour, tried to hold the team together by being a father-like figure and obsessed over tech and engineering.

Thundercats 2011 show:

What i liked:

- The story was awesome, i loved the build-up in the story and the cool changes on it and that they made episodes about slavery, homelessness, abuse and depression and why someone can be or feel the way they are, they didn't shy away from it.

- The characters had loads of personality, they were all very distinct from eachother (although i do have a dislike with one of them later)

- The villians were even more dislikable than the 80s (in a good way! You want to hate them). They enslaved, tortured, even killed moreso than the 80s show, they were all vile monsters and Mumm-ra was even worse, these make for good villians.

- The lore of the entire world, the races, the why's and the how's were perfect (why was this pillar here? How did it get build? That sort of thing, everything had a reason to be there)

- The story arcs were awesome, not long and drawn out either but short and cool.

- The fights were 10x better than the 80s one lol, there were actually fights in this that lasted longer than 2 seconds before it interrupted like in the 80s.

What i didn't like as much:

- The show was very formuliac of its time... every show at 2009 and beyond wanted to be "the next Last Airbender" with using all of that shows ideas and crancking it up to 10. It had the teenage melodrama of "hero is a bit of a wimp but gets cool at the end" and the annoying love triangle every show had back then with the whole Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura type of love triangle and the rivalry between the 2 main male characters. Legend of Korra had it, TMNT 2012 had it and so many others... i grew tired of it once Cheetara and Tygra became a thing because it got worse... so much worse that i wondered if i should continue.

- Tygra... i really couldn't stand this guy until maybe the last 5 episodes. He was a jerk to everyone, nearly KILLED HIS BROTHER TWICE, and was super selfish and a petty loser and brought nothing to the show apart "he is the rival of Lion-o and needs Lion-o to face himself".
What an annoying character.

- Eventhough i loved the world, and i did like the show, i felt it changed a lot, too much to the point this could actually be a whole other show. The character personalities were completely changed (although i liked the personalities), the world is completely different and the whole lore. Dont get me wrong, i liked the show for what it is but... i'll be honest if this was called "Charley and his amazing pals" and they changed the look of the show it would still be the same show just... different looking.

All in all, i liked both shows but i prefer the 80s one.

New interview about the upcoming Thundercats relaunch with Greg Pak and Saladin Ahmed. They both elaborate a bit on some upcoming developments that have been discussed in other news blurbs/interviews. Quite happy to hear more exploration of Third Earth is in the cards; that's something I really thought was missing from the main title previously.

As far as I know, Apex was supposed to take place between 9 and 11. Lost in time was leading into crossover with future Silverhawks. Road to war was leading into present day silverhawks.

Latest edition to the collection

Saw the cartoon in the 80's but fell off due to me being a Ninja Turtle kid, but since the comic from 2024 is still going strong i sparked new interest and i'm watching the 80s Thundercats show again.

But what are some future projects? Maybe rumours? Assuming a beat em up is probably going to be made because a lot of 80s and 90s shows are getting (or has gotten) a beat em up game.

ThunderCats Volume 2 Issue 1 releases 2026 Oct 07. We know that it will be in the same universe as Volume 1 and have the same characters, but it will have a new writer and artist at the helm. Lion-O will be effected by a cosmic event, turning him into the dreaded 'Feral King' and he becomes a total beast. It has currently been approved for 5 issues.

Had to upgrade from a short box to a long box for my ThunderCats collection. I thought you guys would appreciate it. I've bought everything that Dynamite has released ThunderCats wise, and have 1st prints of everything. I can't wait for the new creative team to take the reigns.
