News Desktop settings research: what we learned from your feedback (blog post)

A few weeks ago, we conducted hour-long conversations with 10 of our users to dig deep into how you manage your preferences and configurations in Thunderbird desktop. While this specific research cycle focused on the desktop experience, our ultimate goal is a holistic strategy that ensures our mobile settings feel like a natural extension of your workspace.

Here is a quick look at what we discovered, what you valued, and how your feedback is actively shaping our design roadmap.

Desktop Help How to reverse latest update?

I got the update yesterday. It had a pop up that asked me to choose something.I ended up clicking it before I realised I did not have to choose anything and now I have a program running in task manager "Component Package Support Server" even when Tbird is closed. If I close the program in task manager it reopens and stays running when I open Tbird again.

Thank You

EDIT- Thanks. I have never seen it before. It is a MS program but it has never activated on my machine before. I have task manager open all the time. I have win10 so obvi Tbird's recent update 153.1.1 is engaging with this program when it never did before. I can end task but it comes right back once I open Tbird.

Addons Is TbSync Manager trustable ?

I downloaded the xpi file from github, since i have a newer version that isn't available yet.
I was wondering if TbSync is worth it for you given the security implications ?

what i wanted to do is to not consult outlook, teams constantly in order to make a meeting.
I want others to see that i have a meeting though.

i though this plugin might solve this, or do you think that there are other solutions ?

Desktop Help Is it normal for thunderbird for email to lag coming through / loading ?

Is this even a thunderbird issue or a internet connection issue?

I use gmail if it matters.

If I used a different program for email would it fix it or just gmail.com ?

I prefer using thunderbird though.

Desktop Solved Thunderbird + WOW! Email: SMTP Certificate Exception Prevented Sending

I recently had a problem where Thunderbird could receive email but would not send it through my WOW! wowway email account.

After troubleshooting the SMTP connection, I found that Thunderbird was rejecting the security certificate presented by the WOW! SMTP server because the certificate name did not match the server name Thunderbird was connecting to. Certificate hostname mismatches can cause Thunderbird to reject an otherwise usable TLS connection.

What fixed it

When Thunderbird displayed the security certificate warning, I accepted the security exception. Important

The certificate exception offer did not appear immediately, it appeared during the process of trying to send an email. If the exception does not appear right away, try sending several test emails and watch for a Thunderbird security/certificate warning.

After that, I changed the outgoing SMTP connection security from:

None

to:

STARTTLS

I then sent a test email, and it sent successfully.

The important point

The sequence that worked for me was:

  1. Try to send the email.
  2. When Thunderbird presents the certificate/security exception, accept the exception.
  3. Go to the outgoing SMTP server settings.
  4. Change Connection Security from None to STARTTLS.
  5. Send another test message.

This was tested successfully on my Thunderbird installation.

I am documenting this because the problem was not obvious: the SMTP server was reachable, the account credentials were correct, and the SMTP connection worked once Thunderbird accepted the certificate exception.

Note: This describes what actually solved the problem in my case. I am not claiming that every WOW! account or every Thunderbird installation will require exactly the same steps.

Other Regarding Bug 1802145

Is there currently a beta version of Thunderbird available that addresses the sendmail removal? I'm looking to view local UNIX mail spools on Thunderbird, simply to consolidate system mail with e-mail.

The bugzilla report I'm referring to is the following:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1802145

I understand there is a workaround where I can implement a local IMAP server and use it to feed the mail to Thunderbird, but reading the local mail spool directly is much cleaner.

If anyone inside the development team knows the status of the patch, I'm interested to hear how far along it is.

I read in the thread a discussion about implementing SMPT over UNIX sockets. If someone could point to where within the codebase I could look into it, I do have C experience.

Desktop Help Automatically open previous sessions opened mails on startup?

I receive dozens of mails a day and usually keep several of them open through some days until I get to work on them. In Outlook I always get the pop up message on start up whether I want to reopen them when I restart Outlook after starting the pc on the next day.

Is such a thing possible with Thunderbird? Best would be for me to simply open them, ignore them, have them "survive" shut downs of the PC and still be opened on next and overnext etc. startup without even being asked.

Discussion Will OWL ever support calendar? Is there a better O365 addon to get calendar?

Been using OWL for about three years now and email part pretty much just works with my corporate O365 account. Initially the calendar worked too including creating calendar events with correspondents and attachments. I really like the multiple reminders in thunderbird.

Recent months has calendar getting worse and worse, I usually can't make any changes to a calendar event or create a new one now. Various errors and thunderbird starts marking calendar read only. Sometimes closing it and reopening it fixes it but that's worked less recently.

Developer responses from OWL support auto reply with "Unfortunately, the calendar is still in beta and is not a promised or advertised feature."

Basically just using the web calendar at this point.

Desktop Help Which attachment is causing this "newmsg"?

Since a couple of days my McAfee quarantines a threat from an attachment that contains a trojan virus?

Name: trojan:win/suspiciousattachmentscript.a

File: ......\appdata\local\temp\newmsg

Status: Quarantined

I have been going through my spam and trash folders of all my email accounts, deleted them all, went to the webmail side and did the same thing, but this antivirus message keeps popping up. All my accounts are through IMAP servers. It looks like this threat is firing twice or 5 times and then goes dormant until I do something else in Thunderbird. I suspect this attachment is in a "regular" folder, but how to identify?

Desktop Help Recent Destinations Problems

Thunderbird has stopped adding to my "Recent Destinations" folder after I move or copy an email from my inbox. I've tried to delete and let TB rebuild a number of the underlying configuration folders -- foldercache.json, foldertree.json, xulstore.json and session.json. I've also repaired my inbox folder. Still nothing.

Any ideas appreciated. I'm running version 153.1.1esr (64-bit) on Windows 11. However this problem has continued over the last few release updates.

Desktop Help Emails I delete are being downloaded from the server again

I think this problem just started today. I'll look at a new email in my inbox, then delete. A few minutes later, it shows up in my inbox again, marked as unread. I don't know if it's being caused by Thunderbird or by my email provider, Yahoo mail. I have Thunderbird 115.10.1, running in Windows 11.

Desktop Solved Cannot Send Mail to Certain Email Addresses (error message)

I'm getting this error intermittently with some e-mails I reply to:

"An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Request failed; Mailbox unavailable. Please check the message and try again."

I was able to reply to one email this morning and it went through. However, I replied to another email just now and got that error.

The only way to force it through was to go to the Yahoo webmail interface and go to Drafts and open the e-mail there and send it.

The mail that went through fine was under one of my "identities" (forwarded email by my domain provider). The mail that wouldn't go was from my ISP's real email address (sbcglobal.net).

Both identities and the real address are under one profile so I'm baffled by this inconsistency.

I find this baffling and very inconvenient.

Desktop Help "IF This THEN That" message filters

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi all! I'm trying to configure some email filters to manage spam and am coming up short on some specific features (I suspect there may be extensions that will facilitate this to some degree, and I've seen a few mentioned but am hoping that someone will be able to point me to a specific solution either within the regular settings or a specific extension that will do what I'm looking for)

So, some background - I use Thunderbird to manage a few email accounts (mostly Gmail) via POP3. I have my gmail account settings set to never send anything to spam (i.e. deliver everything to TB) and then filter locally to avoid having to go log in to webmail to regularly check for spam. For a long while I just manually sorted it all in the inbox (aside from a few things that I filtered to other folders for dealing with later) but as spam has gotten worse for some accounts over time, I find myself wanting the client to do some preliminary sorting that I can go through manually later.

I've never had the best luck with the built-in spam filters in terms of false positives and negatives so I've created manual lists of sender email addresses and filtered words that mark the emails as spam and move them to spam or delete them, but even this method unfortunately ends up catching a lot of legit emails and because it's custom word filters rather than the heuristic - based spam filters, it keeps catching legit emails in the net even when I've added specific senders to the address book (which, in addition to the "do not automatically mark mail as junk if the sender is in <address book>" setting in accounts, is apparently the method used for whitelisting.

My "Mark as spam" filters essentially take the form "If: Subject contains any of the following: <filtered word> (with a bunch of separate "Match any of the following" lines with one word each per entry), Then: Tag as Spam, Mark as Spam, Move to Spam folder") (and for emails the same thing, replacing <filtered word> with <if the sender is X email address>)

I've tried creating "Not Spam" filters along the lines of "IF: Sender is in address book THEN: Tag as Not Spam", but then when using word and email address spam filters I cannot set the "IS Spam" filters to look something like a bunch of "match any" "IF subject contains <Filtered word>", but also a "MUST also match" (match all): Tag is NOT "Not spam" (or "If sender is NOT in address book") because the "Match this" field only allows either ANY of or ALL of for any one given filter, and I can't figure out a way to first match any email from an address in my address book (and mark it as not spam), and then process any remaining email through the "Check for filtered words and email addresses" filters.

I hope this makes some kind of sense - I realise that I may just be asking for the impossible, or equally well that there's something really obvious that I'm just not seeing, and I'm having trouble searching for other people trying to do this specific thing, so any tips, extension recommendations or even just a "yeah you can't do that" is appreciated as I've been pulling my hair out trying to get filters in the correct order and trying to creatively work around the limitations of the built in features but I can't brain what I'm trying to do, hah.

I've attached a couple of screenshots showing the structure of my "mark as spam" and "mark as not spam"* filters so you can hopefully see what I'm going for. Any tips super appreciated! <3

(* The reason for the two different "mark as not spam" filters is that one of them was trying to match emails that had already been processed by the other filters and marked as spam with the intent to check them against my address book and *remove* them from spam, whereas the other one is trying to catch emails as soon as they come in and flag ones that are in my address book as *not* spam so that future spam filters can ignore them but yeah - issues as above.)

Desktop Help How do I add listunsubscribe headers?

Google and Microsoft are now requiring commercial email senders to include ListUnsubscribe headers. I don't see any way to enable them in Thunderbird or to add custom headers that are enabled by default. I have added mail.identity.id1.headers and the header show up on the double arrow drop down to be selected, however I have to manually enter the correct value every time. What I need is a way to set the header with the correct value to be used for every email without my having to click or type anything. I also tried to import an email with the correct headers into the draft folder then send it, but Thunderbird strips the headers before sending.

Desktop Solved Need help with MS365 Calendar in TB

I've moved to Mint on my laptop and am using Thunderbird for email, works well. But I need my calendar, and I can't work out how to get it syncing.

Google leads to adding the TBSync extension but it says it's not compatible with my version, V154.0 (flatpack install from Mint software manager).

Found a link to it's github page but have no idea how to go about installing it.

Setting up my MS365 email was so easy, I'm guessing I've missed something obvious, could use some help.

Tips & Tricks Thunderbird email Godaddy MS365 hang on send

I just spent way to much time trying to configure Thunderbird email client with Google ms365 mail. Figured I would share what I discovered. Hope to make it easier for the next person.

First the server settings - Here is the link i found regarding the server settings. The thunderbird Interface does not look like this anymore but...

https://www.godaddy.com/en-ca/help/add-my-microsoft-365-email-in-thunderbird-on-mac-and-windows-41563

And if/when godaddy changes that link

Incoming Server name- IMAP - outlook.office365.com

Port - 993

Security - SSL/TLS

Authentication method - OAuth2

Username - Email address

Outgoing Server name - SMTP.office365.com

Description - you can use anything here ( GoDaddy., MS365...) Does not matter as long as it is not a duplicate.

Port - 587

Security - STARTTLS

Authentication method - OAuth2

Username - Email address

Close Thunderbird and restart. On your default browser a page will open asking you to login to your GoDaddy account. After this you should be authenticated.

At this point you will be able to receive email and send email BUT.... The emails that you are sending will not go to the sent mailbox. It actually behaves as if it is hung up.

The resolution that worked for me -

Open Up account settings for this email

On the Left choose Copies & Folders

Under When Sending messages, automatically:

Choose Other - Pull Down the arrow to see options and choose the email address, then the destination sent email.

Now it should work.

Desktop Solved Correspondents entry in inbox doesn't match the email sender

In my inbox, there are a few emails that have a sender's name that isn't the sender of the email. In looking at the email itself, the From: entry is correct. Not a lot of emails (20ish total), not consecutive in the inbox. The mistaken email entries are all attributed to the same sender (from whom I have received emails in the past).

I'm using POP3, Version 153.1.1esr (64-bit)

Desktop Solved How to move the attachment panel position

Hi,

Currently, Thunderbird put the attachment at the bottom of the email , but is it possible to move it up? putting it below the addresses like picture 1? or perhaps a side panel.
