Cringe Social media is truly ruining the world.

u/love_toaster57 1d ago
I really feel like some people are just dying for their chance to record a stranger acting in a way they don’t agree with. It’s honestly pathetic.

u/halh0ff 1d ago
So many people want to go viral, want to "feel" special, want attention, want to be right/justified and social media is a direct cause of this.
396
u/DetectiveEames 1d ago
It seems to me like social media exposed something that was already there, and gave these people an outlet to act on it.
100
u/matlspa 1d ago
I'm curious about that. I wonder if seeing this kind of stuff all the time influences others to feel that it's normal to react this way.
59
u/DetectiveEames 1d ago
I think there’s definitely an element of conditioning, for sure. There’s also an incentive to go viral. There’s likely many contributing factors. But I think the origin is almost certainly that these people have this baked into their personalities, and they haven’t received enough pushback for their behavior.
72
u/kat-deville 21h ago
My generation referred to people like that as attention whores.
→ More replies (4)25

I think it’s in the ballpark of attention whoring. But there’s also elements of entitlement, power, control/manipulation. Imo, a lot of it could be filed under “immaturity”.

I have been on planes before social media, and entitled people have 100% always been a thing. One thing that probably contributes though, is that airlines have reduced the room we have by like half since then...
26
u/Brokeback_Camel 1d ago
Yeah. Time was, incidents like this were still going on, just nobody knew about it unless a witness/participant shared the story with you. I often feel the same disenchantment with thinking social media is making us worse but I think it's more just making us more aware that we were already terrible as it is

u/Biguitarnerd 21h ago
I think terrible people existed for sure before social media but now it’s amplified.
There were always terrible people but before they had to be terrible mostly by themselves and now they can go on social media and 50,000 other terrible people tell them they are actually totally ok.
50,000 is 0.00014% of just the US population alone, the odds that they would have ever met or talked before social media are low… but now… they can get their pats on the back telling them they are totally justified to act that way and it feels like they have a lot of support.

I mean the one recording was wrong. And yes you are asked to raise the windo cover thingie, while landing. So the recordee was correct.
The recorder seems t o be trying to get a rise out of the other wan, accusing her of a temper tantrum while she was just laughing at her and feeling sorry for who she is.
Why would someone post this?

A guy at work tripped and dropped a full box and our coworkers ran over phones out to be the first to post someone else embarrassing themselves..... It's the intent that grosses me out. People are trying to 'get' other people. In these weird 'gotcha' moments. The intent then, is to rile up a bunch of other people, strangers, hopefully everyone, that wasn't involved, and send a bunch of hate towards some other stranger. You know exactly what I mean. They want the person doxxed, harasser, maybe fired from work, canceled, divorced, whatever. The intent is purely malicious, but it's veiled as some sort of altruistic evidence gathering.
When people do this, get out the phone to record some unfavorable interaction, their intent is only to ruin that persons life as best they can. It's evil. It's the exact opposite of altruism.
Now, sure, there are situations where having a camera can come in handy. But often, the intent behind recording is purely malicious.
Act like adults people, resolve your disputes like reasonable human beings. You don't need to involve Facebook and Twitter.

I watched the documentary "15 minutes of shame" and it really made me rethink every post like this I see. It made the connection of this kind of vigilante justice to back when people who broke societal rules would be locked in the stockades in the town square and people would throw things at them, but now it's on a kind of global level. You can watch a 15-second short or get even just a photograph of someone seemingly doing something wrong and then thousands of people will harass them relentlessly, to the point of ruining their lives, and sometimes the initial information isn't even correct or it leaves out all the context, and sometimes it's not even that bad. Sometimes it's just some minor infraction that for whatever reason goes viral and everyone feels like they're getting some kind of social justice... But it's not justice at all.
The thing that gets me is it's very often these kind of stupid issues. But there are people doing horrific things out there, that make the news, but people don't go to these kind of extremely lengths for them. Reserving that instead for someone who acts rude in public or something. Idk the whole thing is weird and I refuse to jump on the bandwagon with everyone, and sometimes will play devil's advocate rather than just hop on and start attacking some random stranger.

u/MariachiArchery 1d ago
No one is perfect, we all make mistakes, we all do dumb shit, we have all acted in ways we regret and feel remorse for. All of us. Not to get all religious, because I'm not, but I think it's appropriate to talk about sin here. We are all sinners in one way or another. All of us have done bad shit.
Again, not trying to make this religious, just trying to illustrate how far the concept I'm about to discuss goes back in time. That concept is forgiveness, and redemption, from sin. This idea, forgiveness of sin, and a redemption, has shaped the world we live in today. For over 1000 years, this value, has shaped our society.
This filming people shit, trying to 'get' them, ruin their lives, offers no path for forgiveness and redemption, at all. It is a purely destructive force, that offers zero chance of rehabilitation. "You are terrible, you will always be terrible, and you deserve hell."
It's fucked up. And evil.

I watched it happen on threads this weekend. A lady post a video of a young woman walking up to her porch and taking a package, and labelled it as a porch pirate stealing her child’s Halloween costume. People then proceeded to dox her (the young lady), leave comments on her work’s social media, and leave dozens of comments on her Instagram harassing her. Threads were gloating about karma and getting the police involved. Eventually it came out that the package had been mis-delivered and swapped with a package intended for her. The deeply personal vigilante justice based on one persons filmsy story was so wild and scary to see.

As a doctor who’s sat next to several people having a moment, a lot of it is psych related and that’s really not cool to be filming someone having a breakdown. Even a temper tantrum. 611
u/Valuable-Trick-6711 1d ago
Yeah, plus she barely dubbed the woman’s words at all, just her own, which is dumb cause we can hear her clear as day. The unnecessary music just makes it look more sus because why would you need to add music if it’s not to drown out the lady she’s filming?

u/BowlingforBrains 1d ago
That’s what I was thinking lol - the lady being filmed sounds completely reasonable when we can hear her clearly so I wonder if she sounds even more justified if you can hear everything.
To me it seems like the lady being filmed asked the Filmer to close their window, the filmer said no, and then instead of it ending there like a normal interaction, the filmer got offended by it somehow. But it is perfectly reasonable to ask someone at a window seat to close the window. It is also perfectly reasonable to say no to that request if you’re at the window seat. The only weird part about this is getting pissed off and filming someone over it
232
u/ZoneAdditional9892 1d ago

It even sounds like all she did was ask her to open the blind during landing. Which is actually pretty standard, so that the flight crew can see if anything wrong happens out there. They ask everyone to open them. They always do that when I fly anyway.
19
u/Witty-Draw-3803 23h ago
I don't think they ask us to do that on Air Canada flights - but as someone who always gets the window seat, I do open the blind when they announce we're starting the descent, in case the people next to me want to check our progress/see the city skyline/are anxious about landing. It just seems like a curteous thing to do.

u/FireMarmot 18h ago

There’s a man on TikTok who posts videos from his car camera. He drives a really low fancy car and has a handicap sticker. He goes through and finds any footage he can to try and shame people for commenting on the car.
Should people be talking smack no, but he posts people literally conversing. Senior couple walked past and the wife said “could you get in that?” The husband shook his head and they laughed. Let’s burn them at the stakes.
Even the ones talking trash aren’t seeking him out. They’re talking to people in what they believe is a private conversation.

Was she trying to control the window or did she ask if it can be opened?
In polite society you can ask for what you want. That's not violating a social norm. Now if the Window-seated person declines and then the aisle-seated person throws a fit, starts yelling, starts cussin' out the other person, that violated social norms.
If the aisle-seated person reaches over and starts trying to open the window, that violated social norms.
Asking politely? Nah.

She probably thinks she's going to get support for her actions when she's really being unreasonable and rude. If they're landing, the flight is over anyway so what harm is there in opening the window? I can understand if you have a fear of heights or something and want it down during the flight, but this is so beyond that it makes no sense.
Also, not every public disagreement needs to be a social media sensation. These things used to just be brief, unpleasant interactions, and then you'd go about your day.
I was at a concert recently and there were bleacher seats that were first come, first served. I had blocked out some seats for my family because there had been a rain delay and we got separated while some people were using the bathroom and someone came and snuck in to take one of the seats I was trying to keep for my family.
I very nicely asked if they would move over a seat or go back a row, there were many open seats within the vicinity, and they were very rude about it. I couldn't tell, initially, if they were kidding or were actually refusing to move, but they never did...so.
Either way, at no point was I compelled to pull my phone out to try to publicly shame them or escalate the situation further. It's a concert, we're all trying to have a good time, if you want to be a curmudgeon—fine.
No need to post the interaction online, or try to get social support to validate my feelings that they were in the wrong—it doesn't help anything. You just acknowledge the situation and move the fuck on.

And judging purely by what is said in the video, the gal who is being recorded is in the right.
The window blind is supposed to be open while landing. It's a safety feature. If anything happens and the power goes out, people will still be able to see while trying to make their way out. And first responders can see inside to better assess the situation.
146
u/ham_plane 1d ago
Judging by the dialog, the person recording started (I guess restarted) the entire interaction.
I'd think of it a lot differently if the video started up with the other person talking, but it's basically:
- Other lady: looking at phone
- Recorder: "So, this lady is soooo upset because I wouldn't open my window"
By dialog alone, the recorder is a real drama queen

So, not quite. The United safety briefing, for example, “encourages” passengers to open the window for takeoff and landing. There are no FAA rules that require it.
That said, you should do it. It’s better for emergency situations and, also, I just don’t get how you can not look out the window for takeoff and landing unless your imagination and sense of wonder had been thoroughly trampled. I should reach a million miles with United in a year or so, and I regularly still look out the window.

I don’t see how she’s throwing a tantrum, what does she mean? The person recording is bagging on her but it looks like the person being recorded is actually pretty calm. Maybe something outside of this video would shed more light (pun intended). It just looks from this video like this person asked her to open the window, she said no, the person was (understandably) disappointed and started texting someone angrily or something (reasonable) and the person started recording a video because she didn’t like that she wasn’t happy with her answer. 🤷♀️ ugh

The woman posting this is as dumb as a brick, sorry that's an insult to a brick. I can't handle her voice.

Shouldn't the air hostess be making sure the shades are up during landing

The person filming seems the kind who would happily put it back down once the crew have taken their seats.

They’re seated for the landing. Often they just announce it.

Can’t we just have a disagreement without blasting it all over social media? I get we want to be vindicated but this is too much

Lol. Exercise some self control! Said by the woman filming unnecessarily and antagonising someone in a confined area.

We all hate flock cameras but recording every human transaction is OK?!?! Can we just agree that unless it is some sort of major event recording each other is not an appropriate response to conflict.

Listen the words being used by the lady filming, she’s just a bitchy control freak. Maybe the asle lady was a little huffy about the shade being down for landing, but as far as I can remember they announce over the intercom before landing and ask everyone to put their shades up. Maybe that’s just the airline I use or specific airport requirements.
And yhy force a conflict? I can be snarky and post online that the lady in the window seat is a control freak, that really isn’t unusual. But pull out your phone to record and admonish someone for doing something you aren’t even sure they are doing is ridiculously petty.

u/xAfterBirthx 23h ago
I like how everyone in the comments has no clue that it is a requirement by the crew to keep the shades open during takeoff and landing to spot issues and quickly assess in case of an accident.

The fact that the person who posted this chose to only subtitle her side of the ‘conversation’ makes it clear she doesn’t want us to hear the other side, which makes her wrong by default.

It seems the Woman asked her nicely to open the window and when the lady by the window said no she stopped asking but the lady next the window decided to escalate by starting to record even though the exchange between them was over at that point!

People are more interested in taunting and rubbing little victories in other peoples faces than they are being a fuckin adult and moving on. It's over. You won your little battle, move the fuck on.

I think the person that recorded is wrong. The lady in the video didn't ask to switch seats, she asked to raise* the blind. The camera lady doesn't have to do it, but it's fine to ask.

The shutter is actually supposed to be open for safety reasons upon landing and takeoff. So technically mrs. Bookawindowseat is in the wrong. If they are in fact landing as the other person stated.

I find it kinda funny that the person recording these interactions is usually the one that comes across as a lunatic to us viewers.
Do these recorders not realize that they sound unhinged? I can HEAR the unhinged-ness in the recorder’s voice as she talks down to the blonde girl.
This is crazy.

She didn’t ask for the window seat, she asked for the lady to put the window shutter up while they landed. Which you are supposed to do, anyway.

u/TestDowntown9541 1d ago
Everybody should have a voice. But, everybody doesn’t need to be heard. Social media leveled the playing field for the voiceless, at first…then it slanted downward into an ocean of mud and dookie.
6
u/thaa_huzbandzz 1d ago edited 1d ago
If the person being recorded is telling the truth, "I asked you to open the shade because we are landing", isn't that aviation legislation? Every flight I have been on the window shades need to be open for takeoff and landing.
Edit: It is a legal requirement in my country, no idea about the laws in the country they are landing in.

If you are ever in this situation, play a disney music video. They won't be able to post it anywhere.
Also, social media didn't change anything. We've always been pieces of shit, technology just let's us know about it.

This is only so effective. They can still post is on most sites with zero issue and even on YouTube they MIGHT lose monetization or have it suppressed. The best thing to do is just stop talking. She would've deleted this video if the lady just sat there calm with a smile and didn't even entertain her.

She didn't want the window seat. She wanted to see out the window for takeoff and this bitch makes a big deal out of it
6
u/spacecommanderbubble 1d ago
Actually it is required that the shades are raised during takeoff and landing, she is absolutely correct about that.
5
u/2BadSorryNotSorry 1d ago
She is not upset about not having a window seat. She simply asked if you could open the window for landing and you said no. She seems nice. You do not.
5
u/Kiwimonster77 1d ago
The person recording is in the wrong. The other woman says at the start “I asked you to pull up the window shade because we’re landing.” I always book the aisle, and I would do the same, BECAUSE IT’S A SAFETY ISSUE!!

u/demoliahedd 1d ago
I hate whoever the person is that recorded this. They seem insufferable and who the hell records and posts something like this?

Everything from this interaction aside, how much of a jerk do you have to be to not open the window when someone is excited to see the city they're flying into??? Like what, you're already awake, are you afraid of 3 minutes of sun?
This request would be like holding the door for an old lady coming in behind me, I wouldn't even consider not doing it

u/yoursuburbanmom 1d ago

Window lady is wrong and absolutely egregious.
If an aisle person asks an awake window person to lift the shade to look out for a minute, window person should get over themselves and do it. Just like aisle person will stand up and let window person in and out for bathroom.
Flying is not the place to act like window person is acting. Trashy.

u/Kashley006 1d ago
The woman recording is the issue. They are landing. It's daytime. The woman filming said no, and it appears the other woman accepted this decision. The woman filming seems to be the one antagonizing and filming out of spite.
5
u/X0X0xoxo11 1d ago
Op sucks. All that lady asked was for her to open the window not give her the seat ffs. She went back to minding her business and gets recorded for “likes” and “views”. Social media was a fucking mistake.

Books a window seat. Closes the shade. Says NO when neighbour would like a peak. Proceeds to film said neighbour, telling them to book their own window seat.
Interactions like this is why I’ll eventually disconnect.

The woman recording was just looking for her viral moment and trying to create drama.

Does she say "because we were landing?" Isn't that a rule to lift the shades? I fly all the time and they always come by and make us lift the shades. The person recording is just flouting direction and gets triggered when another passenger asks her to comply?
3
u/Resident_Goodish 1d ago
Just open the window. She’s just asking for it to be open during landing, probably to take a pic but who knows or cares.
One is mad that a simple request can’t be fulfilled the other is a complete weirdo to not oblige and film it instead.
