Homebrew Traits

Upvotes

I made some homebrew traits for my own games, especially to fill in the magic user gaps, and thought it would be a good idea to share!

A lot of them are inspired by prestige traits or systems from the micronomicon, just adjusted and made usable as usual traits. Feel free to use/edit them as you like!

Animal Companion: Sick ‘em, boy! You have an animal companion who will fight alongside you. Animal companions have specific traits based on size. Must be the size of a bear or smaller. The animal begins its turn at the end of their master’s turn.(pg. 73)

Animal Handler: Ain’t she a beaut! Roll with advantage when trying to handle, wrestle, calm, or otherwise interact with a non-sentient animal.

Beast Shape: I’m hungry like the wolf! Allows a character to transform into one animal chosen at character creation. While in the animal form they cannot use weapons or magic, but do gain a temporary trait(s) based on their size. Must be the size of a bear or smaller. Hp does not change with form. (pg. 73)

Devotee: I’m a follower, not a leader! You receive power from your devotion to a god, demon, or other higher being. You roll with advantage on actions within their dominion/that they’d approve of, and disadvantage on taboos/actions they would not approve of. Examples: A demon assisting a character who is trying to steal something, a goddess of the stars aiding a character with navigating at night, a forest spirit disapproving of a character chopping down trees.

Divination: I see… Once per session your character may seek information using arcane means (tarot, crystal ball, necromancy, etc.) They may ask a question to the universe (GM) and the universe has to answer… though the answer doesn’t have to be straight forward. Can be used to gain clues, get help with puzzles, or reveal information about enemies.

Pact: Do we have a deal? You have made a pact with a god, demon, or other higher being. You have been given access to their power, at a price. Once per session you may contact the being for assistance, granting focus on all attacks for one battle.

Performer: Mama, I’m a star! You are adept at some form of performance (music, singing, dance, etc.) and can use the power of your performance to charm the hearts and minds of others. At character creation you receive an instrument or other object that enables your performance (optional.)

Saboteur: Consider your pants peed. Once per turn your character can roll to hinder an enemy, making their attack roll at disadvantage.

Summoner: I choose you! By sacrificing 1 hp, your character can summon a fodder-level creature to fight for them. You cannot use this ability if you are down to 1 hp. The summoned creature begins its turn at the end of the summoner’s turn.

Telepath: Talk to me, baby. You can speak to other characters through your thoughts, as well as read minds. You must be able to see the target to use telepathy. For mind reading you must roll a successful 2d6. You may only read minds with permission from the player, or in the case of NPCs, the GM.
