Messed up split transaction
I’m not usually on cash and I was doing a return and they paid half cash half debit. I got confused and returned the full amount on debit, I believe it was like 110 and they paid around $50 in cash but I returned it all on debit. Is this bad? It went through on the customers card but Im afraid I will get in trouble or it’s gonna screw up in cash office.

I’m a CEC and CO Associate. You refunded $110. It doesn’t matter that the original payment was debit and cash. $110 went back to debit, which is basically the same thing.
I honestly don’t know of a way to refund on a split. I’m sure it can be done but I wouldn’t ever do that anyway. Or have an Associate try it. 😬

as a cec and co associate it’s a little alarming that you don’t know how to do that. it’s very simple and is company policy. if customer does gift card and debit you return it all to debit??

In 3+ years I’ve never had one single return on a split payment. At least not one that I noticed, or one that was the “entire” order. One or two items maybe.
Debit and cash are the same thing basically. I try never to give out cash - if the system displays a card I always refund to that.

I’m shocked that you haven’t done split payments on returns!?? We do them all the time! If the receipt shows a split payment, it’s policy to refund the original form(s) of tender as long as it’s within 30 days. As CEC you should know this.

Thank you! My store always said we have to refund back the exact way they paid but it gets a bit confusing when they’re only returning certain items rather than the full amount. My CEC was on break so i panicked and just refunded all on debit. A lesson for next time, I’m just glad I didn’t cause any discrepancies for cash office.

To refund on a split transaction, you would just type in the amount going back to the payment methods separately, just like you would when doing a purchase.

If you gave them no cash in return then you are fine. If they returned 110 dollars in merch and you returned 110 in debit you are fine.
