I i have recently adopted a socata tortoise, and I am currently building an outdoor pen for him or her. I live in central Florida and I'm wondering what I should use for his bedding inside of his enclosure. Any help and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I got this leopard tortoise awhile ago in January. I know the basics of care for him but was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on boosting his overall life. I built a make shift enclosure bc I hated the glass cages.
Any tips on better diet (the seller told me to just feed him lettuce)
Is soaking really that important?
Does he get bored?
I leave water for him but I’m not sure if he drinks it

Looking into getting a Russian tortoise next year and just looking for advice when it comes to building a comfortable but also affordable home over time. I’m told many people recommend non glass enclosures for many reasons including it’s easier to clean.

I inherited a young tortoise and the only knowledge I have is what I’ve been seeking to learn. I live in Kuwait where summer temps reach 50 Celsius and winter months are like Florida winters. So currently she is indoors but in the winter winter when not too cold she’s on the rooftop. I haven’t managed to get her uvb/uva bulbs yet as no stocks due to the war, however I found someone who has a Reptisun bulb new, that I’ll get today.
I finally made a big enough enclosure for her that looks pretty good to me , but sometimes she’ll be trying to get out and if I get her out she’ll go to a favorite corner and go to bed. So seems she sometimes wants to be out so she can go where she wants to.
I met a well versed expert here that told me she shouldn’t be inside at all , and that she keeps her tortoises on her roof year round and they’re fine. She has a Hermann but I have a Greek . I read Greek tortoises should not exceed temps above 40 Celsius. She told me it’s fine , they will burrow.
Whenever I transplant a plant in the summer the soil is boiling all the way through. Ok that’s a pot not an enclosure, but I’m pretty nervous to let her live in this heat in the summer . Thoughts ?

I'm finally in a position to upgrade my enclosure for my hingeback out of her tank enclosure (I know, I know, glass is bad) into what is essentially an animal feed stock tank. It's 4 foot in diameter which should hold her over until she's full sized.

I've got a dome lamp stand for the basking lamp, ez-pz. I've yet to find anything suitable to hold the UV tube lamp though. There's no clips or holes to run wire through. With the tank is was simple, rest it on top the screen mesh.

I've searched around and can't seem to locate anything. Do people with large open top enclosures like tables and tanks just swap to dome UV lamps? Build something out of wood and stick the tube lamp to it somehow?

Hello all. I have a 5 month old cherry head tortoise and being in the Philippines it is getting hard sometimes to find a variety of food she can eat. Plenty of hibiscus but she can’t live on that alone. Recommendations for pellet food would be great that I can supplement with some vegetation and occasional fruit would be great.

She is indoors with a good uv light. I have calcium and vitamins I give her too. Thank you in advance.

My 20 yr old Horsfield seems to want to hibernate early this year. Can I stop her?
We are in the UK and have had heatwaves which have thrown us somewhat.
The usual routine is that she is in the garden ( greenhouse with monitoring at night) until August, indoors with heat and light Sept, wind down inside Oct, fridge Nov.
This year because of the heat we made an enclosure under a fig tree with patches of sun but mainly shade. She is very sensitive to changes in light. For the last 2 weeks she has reduced her eating to almost nothing and spends her day hiding. Even when loose in the garden she goes straight for cover. I have tried introducing heat and light but there’s no improvement.
Should I just move into wind down to hibernate end of Sept and get her up at Christmas and then winter her indoors? I’d rather not…..

I live in Florida and we have a heavy rainy season. My redfoot likes to sleep in the rain and appears to have some shell rot on the plastron.

There is an indoor, dry hideaway, but the little one chooses to sit in the rain instead. Should I work on tucking him away when it rains or just treat the shell when it's dry season? Anyone else have a little one that prefers wet areas?

Hi I’m from Arizona, so I know feeding a sulcata tortoise is mostly grass, and as living in Arizona we don’t have many grass options, I have thought of growing my own grass, if anyone grows grass for their tortoise, do you guys specific brand seeds, I’m looking for Bermuda or orchard grass, but I know it has to be chemical and pesticide free, if any recommendations!
