Community Rule Update: AI-Generated Transcriptions Are No Longer Allowed

Hello everyone,

We want to let you know about an important change to our rule regarding AI use in r/Transcription .

What the rule used to allow:

Previously, our rules permitted the use of AI or OCR tools as long as the user disclosed their use and manually reviewed and corrected the results before posting. This was intended to allow AI as a supporting tool, not a replacement for human transcription.

What is changing:

Effective immediately, AI-generated transcriptions are no longer allowed in any form. This includes: OCR output, Handwriting recognition software, Generative AI produced transcriptions, or any other AI assisted transcriptions based primarily on machine output.

Why the change?

We feel that our community has grown to a point where we no longer need the limited assistance AI transcriptions may have once provided. r/Transcription now has a strong base of knowledgeable members who consistently offer fast, accurate, and genuinely human interpretations of hard to read text.

Any transcriptions that are clearly AI will be removed, and we encourage users to report any transcriptions that you suspect is AI.

Thank you.

- Mod Team.

Any help with these two sets would be greatly appreciated!

I inherited this locket from my mother and was hoping someone could help me decipher the original owner. The photos inside make me think it was my great grandmother’s who would be sBs (maiden) or sSb (married). It does resemble the sSb to me, but I would love some help!

I can see that it arrived in Baltimore 2 July 1903, but what is the ship's name, and where did it sail from? I'm not sure which European country it would have come from, possibly Eastern Europe. Hello. I recently acquired these cufflinks and would appreciate some assistance identifying the engraved inscription. It appears to be a three-letter monogram, though the orientation and script style are making it difficult for me to read. Any insights on the letters or the style of font used would be greatly appreciated.

Transcribed✔️ Help transcribing a 1918 Russian Orthodox birth record from Volhynia

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi! I’m researching my family from the former Rovno Uyezd in Volhynia and found this 1918 Orthodox birth record from the village of Lipki.

The child is my ancestor Antoni Niewierkowiec (Антонъ Невирковецъ / Anton Nevirkovets), born 10 December 1918.

I don’t know Russian or Cyrillic, so I’d really appreciate help transcribing the handwritten text in the entry.

If possible, I’d like the transcription in the original Russian spelling.

Thanks in advance!

Russian/Pусский Transcription Request Help decipher faint text visible through paper

This is part of a letter from Anatoly Dyatlov to Leonid Toptunov's parents. Faintly, the text on the other side of the sheet can be seen, please help me decipher it. Here's the original image, but reversed horizontally, so that the background text is the right way round. I can tell that it starts with "У кого жи..."

Thanks for your help.

English Transcription Request Help me decipher fully smudged ink

Hi, sorry not sure if right page to post but no other subs make sense for this - I am trying to recover a written list on lined notebook paper that has suffered severe water damage. The ink appears to be highly water-soluble marker or pen, which completely bled horizontally into thick blue/purple bands across the middle lines of the page. There is writing on the other side you can see coming through but that’s in tact and not what I’m trying to recover. Just the list on this side.

English Transcription Request Workhouse Examination record

Post image
5 Upvotes

This is a portion of of my great great grandmas workhouse examination record, detailing her history, family, and migration pattern. I believe the word under what appears to be St (street) could possible be Totnes, her home village, with the word before St possibly being Fore as in Fore St.

I would be greatly if anyone could help transcribe the rest.

Transcribed✔️ Anyone want to take a crack at transcribing this old 1917 right of way deed?

I have transcribed the document up to this point so far:

“Commencing at the North - east corner of the North - west quarter of the North - west quarter of Sec. 24 in township 4 N R 3 W B.M. From thence running south 80 rods, and forty feet in width, being 24 feet on the east side and 16 feet on the West side of said quarter-quarter line, except a distance of 325 feet where…. [illegible] …. the line of L.H. Voras and as located, and as shown on the petition.”

The segment where I say “…[illegible]…” is about 5 or 6 words and I’m stumped here.

The first word looks like it begins with “gra”? and ends with a “y”. I don’t think there is an “i” in this word as the author did well to dot their “i”‘s.

The second word looks like the first two letters are “cl” and then there is an “i” and an “l” in the word. Edit: there appears to be a “k” in the middle of this word.

The third word looks like “love”? But also could be “line” and the dot for the “i” might be hidden from the loop from the word above this. Edit: I’m pretty sure the first letter is a “b” on this word.

The fourth word almost certainly looks like “and” to me. But I could be wrong.

The fifth and final word looks like “guarde” to me. Not sure if they spelt this word differently back then… I see many letters in the word that align with that. But it doesn’t really fit the flow of the paragraph and the subsequent words.

Any help is appreciated!
