When I catch books on sale, I always buy one at full price, usually the next or prior one in the series. Usually only one of my wishlist is on sale, but 4 were this time.

I am looking for any books that feel like Deep Space Nine. I am flexible on genre, but I would like to see a complex story with a large, likable cast and a general skew towards optimism the way DS9 has, even if there are darker elements.

I have seen books recommended that are like Star Trek, but on the whole I found they are more like TOS or TNG, with a ship travelling from place to place. Like DS9, I was hoping for something in a more fixed location.

Basically the only litverse books I’ve dipped into yet (though I have a lot more on my shelf waiting for me), but does anyone else feel like the authors of these books sometimes stray completely out of the spirit of Star Trek? At least, I kinda hope I’m not alone on this. I’m sorry, not to be prudish, but I wouldn’t expect a description of a sex scene to be that graphic in a Picard tie-in, let alone something from this era — but then again maybe I’ve misjudged it. That isn’t the only example, but with both books, it’s often striking a tone that I just don’t think fits in this universe as presented in the series.

I’m starting the Romulan War books tomorrow and I just noticed it’s only one of these authors moving forward. Does it get better…? Haha

Anyone read them? Any good? They were only $2.50 each so i thought why not.

Hello all! I made a big update to the site today, and I wanted to spread the word. This has been something I've wanted to do for many years, and I've finally been able to accomplish it, thanks to the help of my Patrons.

I've always known the site could look and feel better than I know how to accomplish. Couple that with the fact that the platform the site is built on being outdated. So the time had come to do a complete overhaul of the site on Yola's updated platform, with their design team also giving it a visual update.

After about two months of difficulties and slow progress with the Yola team, the new design of the site is officially up as of today! www.startreklitverse.com

Like I said there were alot of difficulties with the Yola crew, many of which didn't end up getting resolved yet. So I'll still be working on some details in the coming weeks. Putting more pictures back up on the reading lists like were on the old site is one big part of that. Also, one of the difficulties with the update crew was the hover text version of the reading list pages. These are gone for now, but I like the simplicity of them, so I will be getting them added back in some form in the near future.

In the coming weeks, I'll be going over each page of the new site with a fine tooth comb, tweaking small details. When that is complete I'll be getting back to the regular business of the site, with new updates and features on the drawing board.

Other recent news: I’ve finally made a page yo compliment my Simple Post Nemesis Reading List, a Simple 24th Century Series Era Reading List. This simplifies all the big Litverse stories from the disappearance of Kirk to the death of Data into one easy list.

I did quite a bit of research from a new direction, that allowed me to catalog continuity links for 13 more stories in the Litverse web.

And as always I’ve kept the site updated about the new releases that come out each month.

This redesign was only possible thanks to my Patrons. I really appreciate their continued support over the years. It means so much to me that so many people believe the site is worthwhile. I'll keep striving to make it better and better!

This is a great book if you're looking for how it all began.

For me, its a lot of the early numbered novels, one I commonly see is ship of the line from TNG, and novelisations, in particular TMP and Relics.

I really enjoyed this book. I really like how it ties together to the excellent “The Enterprise Incident” episode. I finished it in 3 days. Has anyone else read this and would like to share your thoughts?

I just watched The Begotten for the first time, knowing it's his last appearance on DS9. I'm curious whether he appears in any novels

Don't get me wrong, I love all the Star Trek shows and movies. It's a core part of who I am and has motivated a lot of my life choices.

That being said, I think the books have somethig really special hidden inside them. I find that I get way more immersed in a good Trek book than I do in an episode of television. I love how they can be such different ways of telling stories, and yet feel distinctly Trek.

My experience with the Star Trek books is that they can have everything I like about the movies and TV shows, but the added bonus that anything can happen. It's not bound by budget, or limited to what you can see or create on screen. It's only limited by the imaginations of myself and the author. The only downside I can see is if I want to get a single story in one sitting, that's pretty hard to do with a book. We're going into a bit of a dry spell - we've only got 21 more episodes before the only Star Trek thing we have to look forward to is maybe a movie. I have a feeling the books will become the "main" Star Trek medium for me, and I hope they keep making these books for a long time to come.

I would have preferred to have posted these in an existing thread as a reply, but sine I can't, I figure this'll suffice. This isn't all Star Trek, but it does contain most of the Star Trek books I own. I've been collecting for around 30 years. It's amazing how fast they multiply. The real benefit of these books is that when the shows and prime time line stopped for a few years, and since the newer shows aren't my cup of tea, these (to varying degrees of success) fill the Star Trek fix I wouldn't get otherwise. Please forgive the terrible picture quality.

What is the book or books that got you ‘Turned on‘ to being a mega fan of the books? I can point back to two in particular that I read in 2015 and it just took off from there: John Vornholt’s Dominion War Book 1 “Behind Enemy Lines” and “Enterprises of Great Pitch and Moment,” which was just a little e-book by Keith RA de Candido, which was just awesome. Those are not considered among the “best” ST books, but they were everything to me.

Prefacing this by saying I haven't watched SNW, but have seen TOS: The Cage, and was interested by the idea of Number One as her own character.

Once again, Greg Cox mostly delivers on a very cool idea and connects existing Trek to a new and fascinating concept. The Jatohr's technology made for a really cool hook for the trilogy, and their quandry of encountering a species that was not space-faring but had all the tells of a technologically advanced species ruled. My only real annoyance with the novel is the treatment of Number One/Captain Una. I understand that she has loads of survivors guilt and I like that she is determined to put personal duty above the uniform, but Cox does a pretty bad job at making her act and think like a seasoned veteran even after 20 years of Starfleet service.

Flashback Una is not my problem. She's confident in her skills but fumbles first contact and starts overcorrecting. Any officer would start taking wild swings to salvage what they could, it's very understandable. In the present, however, she retains the qualities of an unseasoned Starfleet officer. She's rash, makes hasty judgments that come back to bite her, and remains overconfident in her abilities while getting into situations she can't get out of. She has superior Illyrian physical conditioning and a sharp eidetic memory, but she fails concealment multiple times, nearly gets killed by a sea creature, and relies on Kirk to shore up her failed plans. She claims multiple times that she's not the cocky, overconfident officer she used to be, but she doesn't show any meaning growth or difference from the Una of 20 years prior.

It all ends up making her feel careless instead of badass. She's got an attitude, but the narrative punishes her for it. Since Kirk, Spock, and even April all demonstrate good judgment and quick thinking, Una feels singularly punished for her womanhood.

Does the rest of the trilogy have this problem? It wasn't a deal breaker because Cox writes the Kirk-Spock dynamic very well and always has really cool spins on traditional sci-fi ideas, but I would prefer "strong" women not to be written so weak*

*I think a lot of Star Trek authors would do well to just write a man and then change nothing but the pronouns in post. Its the 23rd century, humanity likely will have moved away from "I am a woman so I act differently even when I'm supposed to be portrayed as competent and professional" by then.

I loved her character, and was wondering if her story continued in any of the novels. I know she appears in one of the Lost Era books, but anything else?

There was a LOT more going on in the sphere than there needed to be, but that wasn't nearly enough to stop me from enjoying this one.

The way the author described the scenery as the star was about to die was absolutely sublime.

At first I didn't like the implications of Borg activity, but before I got to the end, it made a lot of sense to me given how the Borg have temporal technology.

The idea of waiting for a star to get so close to the event horizon of a black hole that it reaches it maximum velocity (1/3 light speed) and opening a wormhole right in front of it to crash into a giant Dyson Sphere was A LOT to contemplate. When you get to that level of technology, the universe really is your playground and people may as well revere you as a god!

I got through this book way too quickly and I know I need to go back and read it again just for the sheer enjoyment. Easily gets a spot in my top 10 for Trek books!

This issue has been raised numerous times in this subreddit. The number of releases each year dwindle and dwindle. Do you think Paramount will transition from having the books released over at Simon and Schuster and go in house? I hope in the next few months we hear somrthing about 2027 releases and beyond.

Having read 3 straight Trek books without having read one I would classify as bad, I feel like I'm on a real winning streak.

There were some ridiculous moments that I had a hard time visualizing,

I wish they had empowered Diana a bit more. A know she isn't a warrior, but she's supposed to be absolutely brilliant, yet she always needed someone's support to accomplish anything, including surviving.

I liked the logic behind the story and I was laughing out loud when there was an Odysseus character, because I just watched the Odyssey last weekend.

The one eyes were quite annoying, but they needed to write something into the story to handicap the Enterprise, and the backwater planet they were visiting had to develop some sort of advanced technology over the centuries, I suppose.

When Data was being dismantled and said goodbye to everyone in his mind, thinking it might be the end of his existence, I must say it gave me the chills.

I would say our beautiful dancing doctor had the smallest role in this one.

It was a pretty easy read. I didn't feel like I was speeding through any parts of the book and I got through it in 5-6 hours. $6.95 Canadian well spent!

It's a star trek novel with various collected Star Trek stories "as if written by" various authors, like Michael Crichton, Steven King, etc. We saw it at a used book store a few weeks ago, and when we went back, it was gone. Does anyone know what we're talking about? It's bothering the heck out of us and we can't find it online anywhere.

Hi all! Like it says in the title: is the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy worth reading? I am a big fan of the Relaunch/Beta canon novels generally, and so many of them that came after Destiny make reference to the "Borg attack." I've pieced together from context, I think, the main events, but wondering if the books themselves are worth it. I've started the first one and have had a hard time getting into it, but in the past I've had a hard time getting into books that I've ultimately really enjoyed when I got over the hump.

Thoughts?
