the guild navigators use it in order to plot out safe intergalactic space travel, a task that was done using thinking machines pre-Butlerian Jihad. That's why when spice production is threatened it poses an existential threat to galactic trade because without the thinking machines or Spice, planets/systems go back to being totally isolated with no way to trade.

He's the product of eugenicists, but he himself is a cynical, self-admitted coward. He doesn't think of himself as a good guy, but does what he can to mitigate the damage caused by him being able to see the future.

So in the universe of the book, is the future predeternined / fixed and anything they do was always what they did OR is it a multiverse sort of situation where he can change the future and his visions of it changes with each action?

The visions he sees are possible futures (it's not magic; it's hyper-awareness brought on by the spice that amplifies his trained mathematical abilities.) But the act of looking ahead locks him on the path to making them happen. He gets stuck in this "oracular trap" and can't get out of it.
What he's really forseeing is the need to prepare humanity for a future without him, the so-called "Golden Path.". He controls the spice via controlling the Fremen and can see the future. He's the most powerful being in the universe. Not even his death would end his power; it would actuall unleash it.
Paul can't do it. He's too human; he fell in love with Chani, and that love humanized him. So he winds up punting to his son to fulfill the Golden Path.

That's not how I interpreted it. I interpret this as his future sight being complete kinda like Dr. Manhattan. So he's simply choosing which of all possible futures becomes real based on his actions. However, he's existing in a time where certain things are hella overdetermined, so he can't massively change the course of the future, even with perfect knowledge of it.

I think it works both ways, you can see many paths but becoming fixated on one path creates an oracular trap.

I think we agree, but those "many paths forward" don't really diverge that much (outside of the Golden Path). When talking about prescient characters, it's common to see people overrate how much they can influence the future. Even someone with perfect prescience is still subject to "Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please".

They call it the "Golden Path." The Guild navigators also use the ability to see into the future so they can guide ships through space at light speed without hitting anything. Paul is essentially the most powerful navigator and can see the cause and effect of every action in the universe, and sees the "Golden Path" as the only way humanity can continue indefinitely without wiping itself out.
He ends up bailing on it because it might not be the only path, just the one beneficial to himself at the cost of trillions of lives. His son Leto II has the same powers and says "fuck that, we're doing the golden path and I'm turning myself into an immortal worm."
* the 2003 Children of Dune series that was on Sci Fi is a pretty good adaptation of the 2nd and 3rd books if you can find it. Unfortunately the don't have James McAvoy go full worm at the end

I think a major if not the point of the series was that the position of being a messiah/chosen one/heroic figure is inherently dangerous.
I haven't gotten far enough but I think the ultimate resolution is that humanity is able to survive indefinitely because someone eventually develops a technology that makes it impossible for any one person to fully predict the future, and fragments human civilisation into a bunch of smaller polities making it impossible to reconsolidate everyone into one singular empire ever again.

Dune really is a masterpiece, idk if it got over scrutinized via the movies which I haven't watched just because I love the books too much but I also LOVE Villeneuve.
His approach on religion, patriarchy, capitalism and imperialism and fate...idk man just perfect two books, great third, silly fourth and then I start rereading them all.
Also some of the best audiobooks the characters are voiced excellent.

I think their close in general rankings but Children of Dune is typically placed above God Emperor and God Emperor is borderline a stage play with a lot of 'is there a dick' questioning. Still great.
I am also certain you are memeing about it being the best but for the first time on reddit im gonna miss the sarcasm.

I haven't read the Dune books it a hot minute but if I recall correctly the Butlerian Jihad happened because humanity gave over thought and agency to the thinking machines, it wasn't Skynet terminator shit until Bryan Herbert did his books. Kinda funny seeing that shit happen irl now.

I think both 40k and Dune backstory is more or less that the problem with AIs was that a few oligarchs used them to consolidate an otherwise impossible amount of power without depending on any other actual people, and then gave themselves AI psychosis on top of their god complexes.
Good thing they were WAY off the mark on that one!

You mean, return to the original meaning of a 'computer' (people sitting at an office desk with papers and pencils, collaboratively doing complex calculations and making charts, manually generating results for the superior officer/manager asking for them).
Ironically would bring the need for better education again, if not the productivity, at least.
