I mapped every filming location from Season 1 - here's exactly where they are

I've been a HUGE fan of the first season of True Detective since it came out, and always wondered how many of the locations were real vs built in sets, so I went through and tried to map every key location of the first season.

A lot of it holds up exactly like the show, unfortunately some stuff like Rust Bar at the end of the season no longer exists...

If anyone's actually been to any of these in person, would love to see photos, I'm trying to build our a fuller picture of what they look like now, outside of Google Street View.

Wow Pizzolatto showing just how problematic he really is.

I'm new to the show but I've just discovered his ranting and raving of season 4 and being petty. And when someone points out how it seems misogynistic to hate a show with female lead characters and a female showrunner he gets butt hurt and calls them "misandrist" and makes fun of them for "muh patriarchy". Wow what a petty POS he is. And proving that he is quite sexist after all. Whenever someone rightfully calls out misogyny and a man gets angry and claims "that's misadrist!" It tells you everything you need to know. Especially since he thinks the patriarchy is not a thing. And given how he writes female characters in general... yeah not surprising.

Just finished season 1 for the first time and gahhdamn Spoiler

It kept being recommended to me based on my favorite series', but I resisted for too long. I'm glad I did though, because it's definitely in my top 5 now. I always saw McConaughey and Harrelson as decent actors, but with the same kind of personality in all their parts. But this was so different. I'm so impressed with both of them, especially McConaughey. I tend to be in the ACAB camp, but Marty's arc from stereotypical bitter, angry, womanizing cop with no control over his anger, to decent person who finally understands the importance of those closest to him was pretty believable. And the connection between the 2 of them at the end, after everything they had been through, throughout the years, was beautiful and so deep and real. What struck me in the final scene was the glimmer of hope from Cohle, which seemed to come from seeing something so dark that it made all the darkness in his whole life seem almost not as bad. And that solving and putting an end to it probably changed his nihilistic world view to some extent

Really powerful series. So much depth packed into 8 lil episodes.

Ooooooh, who’s the True Detective NOW?

It’s Maggie! Yeah, reviews have been mixed, and it does over-rely on coincidences - but I really enjoyed The Whisper Man (Netflix) - and it kinda has a TD vibe.

I seriously like S2...

All 4 leads are top notch and there are several great scenes that stick with me.

I saw S2 only last year and finally just watched S3-4 back to back. Went back to start S2 and yeah, I really do prefer it just after the first.

Angel of the morning on the jukebox

Maybe it’s nothing, but I’ve always found it significant that Rust puts “Angel of the Morning” by Juice Newton on the jukebox during the scene where he and Marty reunite at the bar.

I know the practical explanation is probably that he’s using the music to drown out their conversation, but the lyrics feel almost too on the nose: “There’ll be no strings to bind your hands / Not if my love can’t bind your heart.”

The song is also full of imagery about sin, darkness, light, and dawn, which feels very Rust, especially given his obsession with nihilism, religion, and the nature of light.

wildly different shows and true detective s1 remains goat but i just finished s1 of furious and think it might be one of the closest in caliber of these eight-episode style seasons

Soundtrack Season One

What a great soundtrack! I’m not sure how I missed how great it was the first time I watched ten years ago. So many amazing tracks. There are a few that don’t really fit but it is 95% a masterpiece.

This scene is probably one of my favorites, the music is so eerie and perfectly encapsulate the loneliness of the two, i would love to listen to the full version but i can't seem to find it everywhere, which is a shame...

they are lonely and old, they made some bad choices and lost all their love ones but they accepted who they are, i love that the music lets you feel exactly this way and its a shame it wasn't included anywhere

From a filmmaking standpoint this scene was just so well done in my opinion. Being one take kept your focus locked in.

Movies that scratch the True Detective S1 itch

I’ve spent way too much time looking for movies that recreate the feeling of Season 1. Not just detective stories, but investigations where every clue makes the world feel darker.

Se7en, Cure, Angel Heart, The Wailing, Longlegs, The Empty Man.

I realized they all share basically the same DNA, so I made a video essay arguing that there’s an unnamed genre here that I’ve been calling “Horror Noir.”

Figured this sub might be the perfect place to test the idea. What would you add to the genre?

Just finished Form and Void. That is the best thing I have ever ever fucking seen. I mean seriously, lightning in a bottle.

I actually want to watch seasons 2 and 3 (don’t care so much about 4, new writer etc). I will be going in with a clean slate and not comparing to season 1.

Spoilers below.

Rust’s final speech about his dead daughter and the warmth of her love. The light’s winning man. I’m still crying 15 minutes later. Holy shit

Insert Martin Scorsese absolute cinema photo

I've watched this series twice before, but it's been some time. I'm a regular follower of this thread, got inspired to watch it again and all I can say is Bravo!! You all bring so much depth and detail to the series that I find myself enjoying it even more this time around ( if that's even possible).

Rookie observation but Marty's repeated sermons about the need for boundaries intensified as his own were crumbling away. Probably the same with Rust and his worldview but it seemed glaringly obvious with Marty this time around.

Love seeing actors from Boardwalk Empire pop up as well--another show up there in the strata for me.

I love using TV monologues in music, this is one of my favourite exchanges of all time. Which do you think would work best with this style of music?

"You know, people that give me advice, I reckon they're talking to themselves"

Also I have a question, I recently finished True Detective season 1 and haven't started season 2 as I am afraid that it'll disappoint me. Are the rest of the seasons worth it?

Full Sermon from 103

I've only recently discovered that there is a clip out there showing the full sermon that took place in the tent revival, but sadly every link to it I find is either private or has been nuked by HBO. Anybody out there have a link to a working one, or even a transcript of it? Having absolutely loved Shea Whigham in this season I would be overjoyed to hear the whole thing. I've seen few actors do so much with so little screen time and I'm chomping at the bit while doing my usual late summer rewatch to see more.

EDIT: Thank you to the person who posted the link in the comments! Here it is for anyone else who wants to see it, not sure if it'll get nuked eventually but at least we can enjoy it for now:

Thoughts on tattoo idea I got from Rust’s

So as we know Rust has that skeletal vulture/heron or whatever across the right forearm

I actually really fuck with the location of his however I wouldn’t just go out and get the exact same one because that’s not original to me you know (I know there are people who have it, and that’s dope I just wouldn’t want the exact same one personally)

Anyways I don’t have any tattoos, but am thinking about maybe getting one similar to his for my 20th birthday?

I have thought about it and will some more I know it’s a bit big and a little “loud”

But I really like the idea of a symbolic animal/species or creature and am pretty fixated on the idea of an octopus

Thoughts?

I tried to recreate one as similar as I could to Rust’s in terms of size & location

Lmk if it’s retarded lmao

Oh also if it’s deemed it’s not—which way would seem better? Like which way should it be facing/oriented as I’m not really sure what looks better I included both
