What do you get out of joining a frat?

What are the kind of people in each one?

Networking mostly, parties if that's your thing.

I joined one when I attended UAB, but it was long enough ago that I couldn't give you any useful information as to what each one is like now. If you're interested just go through rush and see who you vibe with. When I run into the actives from my own fraternity at events these days it's an entirely different crowd than it was when I was active.

Can't speak for all of them, but to me it seems like a good opportunity if you haven't found a group of people that are like your people on campus. Didnt go to UAB in my undergrad, but I'm here for grad school and the guys I've talked to are for the most part chill. I'd look into any of the info the FSL office has sent out or posted anywhere if you're interested.

There are some people who had negative experiences BUT seek your own path. Some organizations are more focused on community service rather than anything else.

You have 3 councils that have fraternities(NPHC, IFC, Multicultural). Do your research and seek whatever speaks best to you as an individual. You will have access to social events, networking, and amazing opportunities.

If safety is a concern, make sure you know yourself and never jeopardize your ethics or values for anything

None because I don’t need to pay thousands of dollars to have fake friends, be hazed, or blend in with anyone.

UAB isn’t a “state school” like you would find at Alabama, Auburn, LSU, etc so this assessment does not hold much truth. I rushed a few years ago and it was not in the thousands, hazing was limited and mostly trivial, not like what you hear with major state schools, and most people stay somewhat tight knit afterwards. Find a group of people you enjoy and form a bond with them and most fraternities on campus are relaxed about fees, they don’t just outcast you if you can’t pay
