Question First vs second pass
My daughter is an incoming freshman at UCSD and is enrolling in classes today at 10 AM. She is premed and is majoring in biological anthropology, and does not know what classes to first pass versus second pass. She is in Marshall College and wants to take DOC 1 Chem 6A, math 10 A, and a fine Art GE. What do you recommend for first pass versus second pass?

First pass 1) DOC 1 and 2) Chem 6A or Math 10A if they still have seats. DOC 1 has a decent amount of seats, but if it fills up you won't be able to take DOC until your sophomore year (and have to take it then) since they only offer DOC 1 once per year and you must take DOC in your first two years. Waitlisting doesn't work either since nobody drops the class due to it being required. It will also save your first passes next year for classes you actually need. Between 10A and 6A is a toss up honestly because both classes are pretty important to get into. If you need them both equally, then go 10A, 6A is less competitive, but pick the one that unlocks more classes after you take it. Save the fine art GE for second pass.

I don't remember tbh but it is low so I wouldn't risk it. If you see sections to register for and you are one of the last people to register/you check later in the day that have 8 slots in the section, not 16, then you may have a chance because they may increase the section size to 16 later. I wouldn't count on it. If you don't get in on first or second pass, stalk the webpage every day and you'll hopefully have a seat open up. They do the seat number based on the number of incoming freshman so ideally everyone can get a seat, although it's not guaranteed and you should not risk it.

Yeah it's getting kinda scary to be honest. open slots are diminishing rapidly. My daughter is going for it right now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her. She is trying for the last few Doc 1 seats available and then BILD 4 . . . Pass 2 has to be math 10A and Psychology or whatever elective she can find . . .

You'll be okay; just check the webpage every day, especially on holidays, and you'll get in. I got my friend into his chemistry class for winter quarter by checking on Thanksgiving morning. Don't worry too much for your daughter though; she's got this!

She to doc 1 and math 10A. Bild 4 classes available at that time conflicted with her Doc 1. So now what? For Pass 2 should she should a bild4 lecture and discussion that fits her schedule and waitlist? How likely is it for a bild4 waitlist to convert? And what do you mean check website? Basically camp TSS daily and snatch any slot that opens from a drop? Thank you!

I usually don't waitlist classes, but with TSS you might have to since they admit directly off the waitlist. Yes, checking TSS every day is what I mean. I'm also trying to get into BILD 4 myself, so I think it'll be difficult to get in. She should second pass 6A and the fine art GE she needs. You can take BILD 4 next quarter and then continue on to BILD 5 in the spring. Glad she got into DOC 1 and 10A.

Chem 6A and 10A are big priorities if there’s seats grab them but if not grab DOC 1 and any other GE or other degree requirement like BILD 1 and or 4 if possible

Choose wtv class has the least amount of seats available rn
THe ones that dont have as many availalbe as the others are the most sought after, imo but im js an incoming too so don't quote me on it.

As a professor, I recommend you let her navigate this herself. It is one thing if you're sharing your own knowledge with her, but she is perfectly able to post on Reddit herself.
