Potential Student

Hii! I'm looking to apply soon once some FASFA stuff is done and I was wondering if anyone knew how to look for scholarships and 'cheat' the system. My boyfriend says that the counslers don't help much and it's better if I get in-the-know from someone who has gone to UWM.

I wanna pursue MLIS overall but I believe that would be after my general degree. :) I'm also wondering how the dorms are? I was thinking about moving a few months beforehand to the shorewood area but between waiting on my pay stubs from my new job and the mess of housing vouchers I'm just waiting for time to do it's thing.

As was already mentioned, there's a scholarship portal. It's been a long time since I've been a student, but I'm pretty sure you'd be looking at applying for scholarships for next year at this point.

Also, I could be wrong here, but I thought Freshmen were required to stay in the dorms nowadays (provided you don't fit one of the exceptions)?

Definitely meet with an advisor. They're not there to hand-hold you, but do offer good insight.

Okay! I was just worried that advisors sometimes don't give the best information, and I'd get fucked over. Deffo have seen the scholarship portal before; I just need to go over it with someone who's done college in my group. I'll probably do a mix of the two, take all the information from the advisor and then go over it with a friend who has done college.

And yes, I'm looking at the 2027 year, no worries haha! Wouldn't of started this year for multiple reasons!
I also assume an advisor would help me regarding specific circumstances if needed? Overall I'd rather get my own place since I do own a cat and have a large amount of stuff. I know they may make an exception if you already have an apartment in the area, I think? Regardless more questions that an advisor can answer.

UWM has a scholarship portal that you can apply to specific scholarships and submit a general application.

Definitely do the scholarship portal. You can put in a general profile and it’ll give you scholarships that match your profile. There are other websites you can check out, I know some places have scholarships available as well, so you can always google specific places to find applications. I do believe it’s required for you to live in the dorms first year, but i would double check with an advisor if you can move into an apartment or sm nearby to be considered a commuter. I’m a commuter so i haven’t seen the dorms, but they’re not standard dorms from what i can tell, they’re all similar to suites you’ll see online. I’ve enjoyed my time at UWM so far! They have a lot of activities that you can participate in and plenty of clubs. The greek life isn’t that big here, but there are some frats/sororities that you can join
