Dramatic footage of flash floods tearing through the main border crossing between Nepal and Tibet has been widely shared internationally. But on China’s heavily censored internet, much of the footage has become difficult to find.
Chinese state media has shared images and videos of rescue teams searching through mud and debris, but little footage of the floods themselves or accounts from survivors and families searching for missing relatives.
Hundreds of people are feared dead, while thousands remain missing as rescue operations continue.
The limited coverage comes amid tight controls on information from Tibet, a politically sensitive region that has been under Chinese rule since the 1950s. Foreign media access to the region is also heavily restricted.
The disappearance of flood footage has raised questions over how the disaster is being reported inside China.
