applications / ucas Professor won't give me reference

I'm in my final year of my undergrad degree, I'm predicted a 1st and hoping to go to a top school in Business coming from a bottom university (I didnt do well in A Levels).

So I've prepared my personal statement for my Master's application and email my lecturer and ask him for a reference but he says "how can I give you a reference if you haven't graduated?"

How could he say this and know a lot of unis open admissions in October and if you want to get into competitive courses you have to apply early. I haven't heard from him after emailing 5 days ago and I feel pretty infuriated.

What should I do?

edit: not angry just shocked and upset because hes advocated for me and always given me good marks but thank you for the advice

update: after mentioning this to my lecturer he gave a really good reference, must've been some miscommunication, thank you all for your thoughts and helping me in my response :)

social life Men B Vaccine dose no.2

What the actual living hell is this?!

My first dose a month ago wasn’t bad; I did have a sore arm, but I got better within a few days.

BUT THIS ONE!!! 🤬 😡😤

I genuinely thought I was going to die... The jab was alright, but three hours in, I start shivering like crazy. My entire body felt sooo weak and I started to feel a little nauseous. Full on believed that I was going into hibernation, and that I won’t make it 😭😭😭

Idk, maybe I’m exaggerating, but I’ve NEVER had a vaccine go like this before. I feel better now, but idk what to say.

How did it go for you guys?

UPDATE: thank you for the award 🎉

social life Not wanting friend to go to same uni as me?

Me and my best friend are looking at unis at the moment and I’ve had my number one picked out for about five months and recently she’s changed what she’s wanting to do and wants to go to my uni. Even though it’s not her number one choice, I’m lowkey a bit upset by it and I know it’s totally her choice and I respect that, but I would like to go to uni and completely start fresh and I just know that if we go together we will have to meet up all the time. I just want to meet new people and have a uni experience completely separate from my home town. Does anyone have any advice??

Cleaning bathrooms for students?

Hey guys, I’m currently a 3rd year medical student in Manchester trying to find a side hustle and I have had quite a few ppl in general saying to me they hate cleaning their bathroom and wish they could pay someone to do it. Now for me I actually really love cleaning (yes even bathrooms) and I wonder if you guys think it would be reasonable if I started putting up posters and advertising my service of cleaning students bathrooms esp 1st year students who are away from home for the first time.

Do you guys think you would use this service or know people who would use this service bc I’m just trying to gauge if people would actually want that?

Let me know also how much u would willing to pay someone to clean ur bathroom (maybe even extend to room)

Insane timetable

I just got my timetable for my electrical engineering degree and it is all 5 days a week 9-5 most days 9-4 on other days.

Is this normal? Idk why I thought it would be like 3 days a week with a lot less hours, I guess this is normal for engineering?

student finance How do I stop being guilted

I am the youngest of 4 by a very large age gap, my oldest sister went to university, my second oldest tried twice and dropped out twice, and the one closest in age to me (9yrs older) didn’t do her A levels or go at all. My parents earn enough income for me to get the lowest possible maintenance loan even though we aren’t well off at all so I’m not sure where the majority of that money is going, but they are going to be helping me, I’m also starting a job next month (I’m going into year 13) and will work while at uni. My sister closest in age to me (26) is jealous because she regrets not going to uni and is taking it out on me by making me feel really horrible about them helping me, making ‘jokes’ about them spending their life’s savings on me and just making me feel really bad about it to the point where I’ve considered not going after all. My parents are also saying similar things about how all their money is going to me to guilt me for going to university and I’m just feeling very conflicted, some people say it’s my parents job and they shouldn’t be making me feel bad about it, if I have a kid I know I’ll see it this way whereas others say that it’s their money and they don’t have to support me because I’ll be 18. I have always wanted to go to university and I have the option to just live at home but I really want to get away from my father for personal reasons. I’ve really been considering not going because they’ve been making me feel like a terrible person and I’m not sure what to do or how to get my sister especially to stop making me feel guilty because it really doesn’t have anything to do with her and I know it stems from regret over how her own life has gone which is a little immature to me honestly considering she’s 26 jealous of a 17 yr old over decisions that SHE made, if she decided to go to university my parents would support her just the same but because she didn’t and regrets it, she’s acting neglected to make me feel worse and I don’t know what to do as it’s making me feel really bad about myself.

Excited for the new adventure

I need someone to be excited with me here, because everyone around me seems either indifferent or unhappy about me going to uni soon - out of love I know but I feel really bubbly right now. In school I always would take evry adventure possible for the sake of escape from home and constant surveillance etc and I'm so so so so excited.

In uni, I'll be in halls. I'll have my own room, and I can shut the door. WHENEVER I LIKE. I'll get to practise dance easilyer, and there will be PEOPLE :DDDD and!! THERE IS A BEEHIVE, A BEEHIVE, not sure if we get to help but I want to do eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevverything.

And bonus, I am so VERY excited to start my degree, its Mech eng, and I love engineering so incredibly much - my teachers have been calling me miss engineer for years, like year 6 to y13 years. I love maths and physics, I really hope that the exams are more depthy than examy because for some reason I'm good at the subject and not exams. But bonus!! It'll be so much easier to just go to the study counsellor or what ever and ask because they don't know me!

And, theres a woods nearby, it has bluebells in the summer! I can finally attempt to dye something with blackberries not in secret! If there are roses, I could try attempt rosewater non secretly. AND, I got my own mug! Its so pretty, it has a bird. Its fancy, and from john lewis :OOOO. I'm still forced to return every weekend, but I'm already putting plan etc in place to begin reducing the time at home. Don't get me wrong, I love home, but theres never room for a single mistake or you get lectured for the rest of your lifeeee and its quite a nuisance.

I also might try alchohol for the first time. Though I might not considering I react horribly (jitters+anxious feeling+ too fast thoughts+ jumpiness) to even a teensy bit of coffee so who knows.

I'm so excited to meet lecturers, also I want to meet physicists that can explain more about magnetism because its so strange. Also a geographist or whatever they're called because auroras are cool. Also I want to learn more BSL. There are so many societies too! Martial arts, also, you can swim! Its fun to bouncy up and down under water because your hair goes everywhere! AND THE LAB :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD, I'm already working on my clock but now I'll get to ask the technicians there hopefully for tips because its become kinda complex now. Also, I have a little bag of strontium aluminate (long story) that I'll finally be able to find a feasible interesting use for.

Also, I think the kitchen has a toaster! We don't. I love toasters, they go ping and the toast jumps out to suprise you like, a really aggressive VOILA CRUNCH TIME. Oh, I could put whatever I want on toast. Like biscoff :O, I could try making a mug cake again! (First time, I put everything back exactly the way it was but my mum still came home and noticed the faint smell of cinammon - fuckk). Theres no oven, but theres a sink inside my room! I don't know why thats cool but it is. Easy watercolour?

Not to mention there will be a real life shower - shared, yeah, but still! We currently (and evidently forever) use a bucket (everything in our house is constantly broken, including our freezer, theres no monetary reason not to fix this, just my father doesn't trust people inside the house - [he's a bit strange but aren't we all]) so that will be cool. Oooooooh, I could get a fancy smelling thing if theres enough money. Like, sanctuary spa pink stuff! It smells heavenly but I've never used it. OH, I could try an eyelash curler if someone lets me borrow one. But they look like tiger toenail clippers so I don't know. I'll get to put my ownnn shower stuff in my own little shower bag thats just for me and only me. I sound like a child that is bad at sharing but I don't caaare :1.

What I desperately want to do, is gather enough money to train journey somewhere further in the UK on my own. A solo adventure, you have no idea how much I crave it. Though thats likely completely and utterly unfeasible, maybe in the future. I'd go to the yorkshire dales, orrr lake district to see. eep.

Sadly, my parents actually know one of my lecturers at the uni I'm going to (whyyyy), so theres never complete independence, and I'll have to make sure to figure out how to deal with that class but it always ends up fiiiiiiinnee.

I hope, that I am ground floor and that I will have a window that I can put a planter box in. And grow lavender. And help contribute to aforementioned bees honey. Oooh, do you think we get to eat the honey? Maybe I could try honey on toast! Is that actually good? I've heard its a thing.

Anyway, please do tell what you're most excited for in uni? Writing this hasn't actually relaxed the explosive excitedness in my heart so also share grim stuff you are notttt looking forward to, I'm too energified and I need a tamp dowwn.

I feel like my whole life is ruined before even starting uni

Hi guys, I start uni in around 2 weeks for my first year. I honestly just feel like my whole career is ruined. I can’t help but compare myself to other people on here and it makes me look sooo bad in terms of A levels and GCSEs. I don’t even know where I want to work towards because my degree is quite broad (Business management) but everything just seems soo competitive and I honestly don’t think I can get anywhere. I go to a semi target, I believe ranked top 10 in the UK. But simply looking at people’s CVs fills me with so much regret over how badly I performed in terms of GCSEs, my A levels are alright, but everything I’ve seen on here is better. I feel like if I don’t get spring weeks I won’t get internships and then I just won’t get a grad job. And at that point what do I even do. I just feel like even if I perform well during first year and actually try and put myself out there nothing will save me. I honestly can’t even handle this anymore especially with my social media being so negative in terms of the ability to secure springs and internships, let alone how bad the labour market is.

Ik this is a rant but I’ve had similar anxiety over a level results day for the past 3 months, which turned out to be fine but I just feel like if I’m stressing this much now my mental health will just be ruined throughout uni

Happy New Academic Year!

To fellow academia residents - staff, students, dependents and more - welcome to 26/27, and good luck!

(And for those of us who have programmes that ran over the summer so we didn't really get a break - may the odds be ever in our favour...)

people who went to university and achieved a degree but still don't have a job. what did you study and what are you doing now?

This is a question for the people or people you know of who went to university and achieved a degree but still couldn't get a job in that industry. Im even more interested in hearing from people who studied a really tough course but didn't get their dream job. what do you do now. I hear so many stories of people who work so hard but dont get the jobs the deserve.

Help! Open Uni - GP won’t fill in form

Hi All,
Any help or advice will be massively appreciated.
I have a disability and due to start an Open Uni course next month. I can’t attend the course without a student finance maintenance loan for living costs.
My GP is refusing to fill in the form even though I have all my medical evidence and email proof from a local University that they cannot support my studies.
I am completely stuck and feel out of options and most likely going to have to pull out of Open Uni before the start date.
Has anyone else experienced this and found an alternative route? I also tried an online GP which I paid for but student finance wouldn’t accept this.
Appreciate your support.
Thanks
Andy

study / academia discussion failed first year of uni need some advice

it’s entirely my fault and not because of anything else. even with a levels i only started starting like a week before the exams but obviously i at least knew all the content before that. literally before every single exam this year i knew barely anything about the module and did an all nighter to learn the module from scratch AND get 40%. guess what i failed 2 modules. i had my resits last month and guess what i did again. waited until the last day to study for them. Today I learnt I failed one of them and have to resit only that module next year and tbh i dont know what to do. if i failed because of things out of my control i would just try again but the only reason i failed was because i was a lazy bastard. i know i would definitely pass it if i started studying even a week before but i just cant get myself to study and now im thinking maybe im not meant to go uni. I dont really like my course and thought about changing it but i dont think they would let someone who failed his first year change his course and i already missed the ucas deadline so cant apply from scratch. i would appreciate any advice on what to do. (i go to exeter incase anyone knows someone that failed a year there)

Feeling bad…

I’m 24, and my academic journey has been pretty complicated. After high school, I studied Law for a few months, then dropped out and started another degree in LLCER, which I also left. After that, I took a two-year break. I struggled to find a job, and eventually decided to go back to university, but the university initially refused to accept me. Last year, they finally did, and I started a first year of LEA. I genuinely love LEA (languages), especially the languages, but I might have to repeat my first year, which means being with students born in 2008, after already being with 2007s this year. The age gap bothers me because I’m quite extroverted and love making friends and having a social life. I also really dislike the city where my university is located, so I don’t know if I’ll actually repeat the year. Today, I regret some of my choices. My parents pressured me to stay at home because of their beliefs, and I feel like I lost so many years, including my youth. I’m torn between continuing something I genuinely love and starting over somewhere else.
What do y’all think about that ?

Is anyone else very anxious about starting uni?

I’ve quit my job, bought everything for uni, but part of me is kinda nervous or idk if I’m unsure. I like just working but I’m trying to broaden my horizons I guess and get a better job with uni. My course links directly to a job so I know what I’ll be doing after it but still part of me feels dread and impending doom. I’m not sure if it’s anxiety or me not wanting to go. I’m worried I don’t wanna waste my time going but I’ll never know if I don’t try idk. Any advice

road to classics (ba) as a singaporean?

hello! i'm an IB student from singapore, and i really want to study overseas in oxbridge for classics. i've been eyeing the ba in classics at oxford specifically!

for context i am neurodivergent and i've been learning ancient greek since about 14, but very slowly and at my own pace. i have no way of formally getting a cert (or formal teaching) so right now it's just trial and error. i'm very interested in classics and have participated in some translation competitions here and there, but of course classics is a very "niche" field esp for singaporeans... my parents are supportive though, since they're both in pedagogy and humanities!

would love to know if there are any current classics students in this subreddit that could help me learn more about the process? i'm super interested in learning more about the preparation for classics as well as your personal experiences, and maybe even just the number of international students in the classics cohort in oxford/cambridge right now?

+ if any international students from southeast asia or singapore would be willing to offer me advice related specifically to sg, that would be wonderful!

thank you so much!

Med school after optometry

hey, just wanted to ask if it’s possible going through graduate entry medicine in UK and USA, after completing an undergraduate degree in optometry in the UK.
If so, what unis would accept in both countries?
Would appreciate any help as I’m going into optometry soon.

applications / ucas Is going to University After S5 a Sensible Option? Particularly a Maths degree?

Hi! I’m 16 and currently in S5 (Yr12), and I’m considering leaving school after S5 and going straight to university rather than staying on for S6. I’d be 17 when I started uni. My mother is heavily against the idea, however I have a few extended family members who are in favour.

I’m mainly interested in applying for Maths at Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews. In S4 I got 7 As at National 5 and 1 A at Higher (CS):, and I’m fairly confident I could meet the 5 As required for the courses, especially as I already have one. I got full marks in my National 5 Maths exam, although I don’t have loads of Maths-related supercurriculars (I never did UKMT, for example). I have done a one-week engineering course at Strathclyde and generally just really enjoy Maths.

Medicine is the dream, but I’m unsure if I can go down that route. Most of my friends are leaving after S5, and I also have mild cerebral palsy, so I’m currently contacting medical schools to find out whether that would cause any issues with applying/going into medicine. I’m also considering applying for Maths and then deciding later whether to accept, defer or reject the offer depending on how things look with Medicine and potentially my UCAT.

I want to know if I'd even have a chance of getting a conditional, and whether there would be any massive drawback to going to Uni at 17. From my perspective, plenty of people who are young for their year do it after S6 anyway, and I don't plan on drinking.

Just so you English folk remember we get free tuition in Scotland, so the financial pressure is less.

applications / ucas Is it worth reapplying to ucl/kcl/lse law again?

for context, I got 28 on my LNAT last year and received an offer from Cambridge. due to extenuating circumstances, I missed my offer & got 4As.

Is it worth reapplying to ucl/kcl/lse law again & resitting a subject, but forgoing my unsw sydney commerce/law offer and risk ending up at a worse uni?

(Bear in mind I want to practice in the UK.)

General Engineer identity crisis (UK)

Much like the song by America, I feel like an "engineer with no name", let me explain:

I'm on a General Engineering BEng course and I'll be commencing my final year soon where I'll be specialising in Materials Science and Engineering after having done 2 years of "general" engineering (a mix of process, materials, electrical, mechanical etc.) My degree is weird because I don't know what to identify as other than a "General Engineer" which always seems to raise eyebrows so I just say I'm an "engineer".

I am mainly worried about encountering confusion applying to jobs where perhaps employers will focus on the "Materials Science and Engineering" and less on the fact it's "General Engineering with Materials Science & Engineering" or my experience working in a System Engineering role in Commissioning.

Has anyone encountered this dilemma?
