Modding An actual solution to cheating via mods: code signing

Upvotes

I have thought about this in the past and with the current situation i want to open this discussion.

Vintage story already allows the server to see which mods a connected client has installed. It does so via the modId. The IDs can be blacklisted (I'm somewhat sure a whitelist exists as well but i couldn't find it)

Issue with that: it's trivially easy to take an existing mod and change its behaviour or inject new code.

This is where code signing comes in. The idea works as follows:

A mod creator creates a set of cryptographic keys, a public and a private key. Then any code files (dlls) can be signed with the private key, .NET offers tools for this out of the box. When the mod gets uploaded, the user attaches the public key to the mod.

Now the game can verify if the mod was actually made by the owner of the private key. Any tampering with the mods code would make the attached certificate invalid.

This would have to be validated by the game itself and additionally the game would also need to be signed itself.

There are more sophisticated safety mechanisms but this would raise the bar a lot when it comes to running untrusted code in the game engine.

Discussion I don't play public servers so I need to ask: Has anyone actually witnessed *any* cheating at all?

Upvotes

Before this whole drama that's been going on, I wasn't aware that any "paid cheats" even existed. I'm not active on the discord so for all I know people have talked about it there. But I've never heard a single mention of any kind of cheating, or cheat client.

I basically just wanna know if there is at the very least *SOMETHING* that could have motived maltiez to do what he did.

Situation.

Upvotes

Literally all I'm gonna say on the matter is regardless of what happened, I still love Vintage Story and will continue to support the game studio because Tyron didn't envision what's going on and he wouldn't support this had he known.

It's a big deal sure, but people are going nuclear on the entire studio when it was what, just the one person that screwed up right?

Also, yes it's crap we got "malware" but it didn't actually do anything to your system or otherwise unless you were already exploiting the game, so in the grand scheme of things this could have been much MUCH worse.

Let's not kill this beautiful game over some ludicrous actions of a very small minority here, please.

Question Who else thinks the community's response to the Maltiez situation is a big overreaction?

I agree that mods should do exactly what the mod description says and that you should NOT sneak in random anti-cheat stuff without telling anyone but I feel like the community's reaction is making it seem WAY bigger than it actually is

I've seen people say they are quitting or considering quitting and I feel like that's way too overkill

Question Irrigation mod

Is there any irrigation mod that is similar to the irrigation method from primitive survival? I only have that mod installed because I cant find a good alternative that is similar enough to it, and I want to eventually move on from primitive survival now that the parts I like from it are somewhat in the base game. I really don't like the way you have to set up a farm in vanilla, building across a pond in order to make sure your crops are moist without using a watering can all the time.

Question Texture Scattering Around Humanoid?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Forgive me for being a little lost. I'm posting this after working all day and am tired.

Thought this was caused by having entity mode enabled, but disabling it didn't seem to resolve the issue. Even addressing the textures one by one, this still happens.

Texture size is 32x32 to fit all the sides in there. Though, mostly confused on what is causing the serpah shape to spawn. The mod is the boots. I wanted something with a little bit of toes.

Any help would be awesome. Thank you in advance.

Feature How to refund the game

Simply go to https://www.vintagestory.at/refund.html/ and make a support ticket saying you don't want to have software on your computer that has code from a developer who has pushed malware, and a studio who has turned a blind eye to that behavior.

Discussion My opinion on the Maltiez situation.

Concealing homemade "anti-cheat" in a config library is pretty crazy, but I can see how Maltiez could think it's a good idea. What I can't understand is how Anego was told about this and thought it was fine, and is not setting a clear policy against this sort of thing.

This sets a horrible precedent. It shows they don't care if mod creators subject you to absolute slop in their mods. Maybe we'll all add some targeted sabotage to our mods, since it's no big deal.

I love Anego and Vintage Story, but there needs to be some closure here before we can wrap this up... It's not frivolous Reddit drama it's a seriously concerning violation of trust.

Does anyone else get weirdly attached to their first copper tools

So I finally managed to find a decent copper deposit after wandering around for what felt like forever, and I made my first copper pickaxe and axe. I know they're not amazing or anything but I cant bring myself to replace them even though I have bronze now.

Like I have a full set of bronze tools sitting in a chest and I keep using the copper ones because they were such a pain to get in the first place. I even named the pickaxe in my head, its called Gerald. My friends think im being ridiculous but Gerald and I have been through a lot together, you know?

I had this same problem in my last world too where I kept my flint knife way longer than I should have. Maybe its just me but those early game struggles make you appreciate the tools more. Now I have this weird museum chest with old tools I refuse to throw away and its taking up space.

Anyone else do this or am I just overly sentimental about pixels?

Is it safe to play vanilla?

Was about to hop back on VS, even gift a copy for one of the friends to play on our private server. We began playing about a year and a half ago and have been only playing vanilla.

So the question is, does this Maltiez guy work on the game itself or is it just his mods that were affected by the spyware of his? I'm not keeping an eye on development this much nowadays and I'm not on the game's discord either, just feeling a bit uneasy about this whole thing

Discussion Why did Maltiez do it?

It's not clear to me why on earth he would put this kind of malware in his mods. He has nothing to gain from this. Is he just as entitled as the other infamous skyrim moder? Does he just want everyone to play the way he intends?

In all honesty, it’s a pretty unfortunate situation and I do hope it gets sorted out as quickly and in the best way possible for everyone been involved
But this has made my head hurt, and at the end of the day I can’t do really do anything about so I’m just gonna hope for the best and log off

Be kind to each other and to yourselves
Cheers!

Discussion current situation banned as topic from main chat

this seems rather concerning to me, why would they ban any mention of the topic, civil or not, from being discussed? this seems very strange on anego studios’ part ): i’m very worried! i love this game so much

"When is Maltiez being fired?"

Banned 30 days for suggesting MALWARE should be a fireable offense. These mods are a disgrace.

Discussion Tyron needs only to look at how Starsector's alex handled this exact same premise

By banning maltiez. Simple as.

T.read should be gone from moderating the discord server too, and any who supported injecting malware into mods.

Malwares has no place in any modding community, forgive this and it'll only get worse.

The only resolution to the Malware situation...

Is to fire Maltiez, anything less and you can't be sure he won't try and inject more malware or worse again. The trust has been broken.

Yeah you could say the recent situation does affect me Spoiler

Malta guy, you have made a powerful enemy due to your myopia.

There better be so many arquebuses, muskets, and other early modern firearms in your next update, and maybe a new crossbow or like a firelance or something.

And yes I can get it running, and yes I play on saves until I start a forest / pin kiln fire

Last save (started a new one so this world is gone) https://youtu.be/6nT6TZrncQA

Okay, now we can all move on, as a community

When was Maltiez given dev access?

Forgive me if I'm OOTL on anything and correct me if needed.

I'm a recent VS player and with this story about Malware being put into his own mods, I'm worried my vanilla version of of VS (downloaded 21 August) may have in some way had his mitts on it which would warrant immediate deletion on my end. I have never done any modding on it.

Obviously it has not been confirmed AFAIK that he did anything to the game files themselves but my feeling is I won't have any game files on my system that he's had dev access to.

Discussion Anego Studios and Customers' Safety and Rights: Keeping the Player's Trust

Post image
159 Upvotes

This recent problem with Anego Studio's approach to mods and how they deal with internal problems, brings to light how much we can trust even indie software studios to self-police. Specially when it comes how they handle third party mods, and how much caution we have to exercise when using third party mods, run on indie games.

Personally, I was made aware of the malware code, when a music mod I was using in a private server with friends, caused everyone constant crashes.

As explained here by u/Latmei and with a very in-depth analysis of it here. Maltiez, an official developer of Anego Studio, introduced what by a large amount of cybersecurity companies(CrowdStrike, Kaspersky, etc) consider it is malware, in one of their mods.

We, as players and customers. Spent money, on not even a finished game software product. Expecting the developers and owners of said software product, to behave with transparency, honesty and integrity.
They had a Terms of Service for mods that forces the modders their own game to:

2- You warrant that the mod contains no harmful or malicious code, no material which is defamatory, bullying, offensive, obscene, or pornographic, and no breach of copyright of any other person.

5- A mod must have a clear explanation of its function in the English description.

The modder in question, and Anego Studio's Vintage Story affiliated and officially paid developer, broke these rules when they published the their mod. Without full disclosure of what actions said mod did.

And they did it with the full knowledge of the rest of the Anego Studio, and their tacit agreement on such practice, as per the screenshot in this post.

On top of being a breach of even their own ToS, not to even talk about the morality and ethics of such a thing. It is a huge breach of the player's trust.

Customers have and must never let, for companies to sell products or services that perform functions and actions that are undisclosed, hidden or worded in ambiguous and misleading terms. And even less to let them keep doing anti-consumer and anti-user practices. Specially in this landscape, in which players are treated like products to squeeze money off, instead of customers that support and allow them to work in this field.

Players come to indie games, fleeing from the enshitification and anti-consumer practices of such game corporations such as Electronics Arts, Sony, Ubisoft, Epic Games and other billion dollar corporations. Not to even mention of such other corporations like Microsoft, Google/Alphabet, Meta, Apple and so on, that have really set the gold standard, in how much they can get away with.

We hold contempt, frustration and anger against the aforementioned enshitification, anti-consumer practices and dark patterns that these companies and corporations employ. We do not want it to extend too, to even indie developers.

Finally, this is a warning for everyone. Any and all mods you download for any video game(Minecraft is a big example of this, as with Starsector or Rimworld), can and will have malware code that can not only affect your game, but your whole computer too. Be always vigilant of suspicious behavior after installing or updating any mod, in any game, and always.

Edit: For clarification. Said malicious code was found as it created a lot of "false positives" on mods that it was not the individual paid cheat mod described in the forensic analysis posted above. Otherwise no one would have found out that they let a fellow developer break their own ToS, and inject malicious crash code.

Question Is it actually malware?

I've seen a lot of info on this and have had trouble, not being a programmer, sorting truth from fiction.

I've heard that the Maltiez "malware" targeted mods by a guy he didn't like in particular and that the code was set up to hide the cause of the crashes in the crash reports. Is that true?

If it is, then this is beyond drama and entering possible felony charges territory. No matter how petty the effect or motivation, distributing malware is a crime! But again that's assuming that it actually is. Experts, please chime in and lay out the actual facts here!

Also as an aside: seeing the Discord mod meltdown is really funny. As a Helldivers fan, I'm quite used to seeing that kind of thing but it is still always a hoot to see. On the bright side, we're getting a great litmus test for the developers! Whether or not they back that mod and Maltiez is absolutely a make or break for the direction of this game and the community.
