A note to the volunteer operators who found us this month — an invitation, and a challenge

Posted and stickied by the r/Volunteer mod team.

Over the past few weeks, as GVI collapsed and left students stranded mid-placement, something predictable happened in our megathread. Within about 48 hours, roughly a dozen volunteer operators arrived. Some of you we'd never seen before. Several of the accounts were days old — in a couple of cases, hours old.

We want to talk to all of you directly, because there's a question worth putting on the table.

You showed up, and we saw you. Naming the operators who posted or were removed in that thread: Maximo Nivel, Global Leadership Adventures (Terra Education), Projects Abroad, Natucate, Volunteering Solutions, International Volunteer HQ, NatureMind Research & Development, Wildlife ACT, and Marine Conservation Philippines.

Credit where it's due first, because it matters. A few of you led with help rather than a pitch. Marine Conservation Philippines wrote an actual guide to chargebacks and refund routes and shared it freely. Volunteering Solutions was upfront about who they were and walked people through Section 75 and chargeback timelines before getting anywhere near a sell. Maximo Nivel offered stranded students in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru a safe home base at zero cost, and by one participant's account took on some of GVI's abandoned field staff. That is what an organisation looks like when it sees a community rather than a customer list.

But here's the harder part, and we'd be failing this sub if we didn't say it.

For a lot of the offers, the shape was the same: an account created that week, one post, a fees-and-inclusions block lifted straight off a landing page, and then silence. No prior participation here. No answers to the hard questions this community actually wrestles with. Just an arrival, timed precisely to the moment when several hundred young people had money tied up and nowhere to go.

You describe yourselves — and many of you genuinely are — as reputable, established, better run than GVI. B Corps. WWF endorsements. Decades of operation. Six-figure participant counts. We take that seriously. But reputation in this field is not a press page. It's whether you contribute to the body of knowledge and practice around ethical volunteering, or whether you only materialise when a competitor dies and there's a stranded cohort to absorb.

So this is the invitation, and it comes with a challenge attached.

We want you here — not as recruiters, as contributors. This sub is trying to be the place people come before they hand over £3,000, so they can tell a real programme from the next GVI. You are exactly the people with the expertise to make that possible. So put it to work:

Write for us. Real articles, on the things you actually know. How to check an operator's financial protection so participants aren't left as unsecured creditors when it folds. What Section 75, ATOL, ABTA and the Package Travel Regulations really cover — and where "land only" bookings quietly lose that cover. What safeguarding on the ground should actually look like. How to spot orphanage tourism and other harm dressed up as good. The gap between what a participant pays and what reaches the local project — a figure one of your own sector partners raised in that very thread.

Answer questions when there's nothing in it for you. The single strongest signal any of you can send that you're not GVI is to show up on an ordinary Tuesday, for a nervous 19-year-old comparing two programmes, when neither of them is yours.

Here's the bar, so it's clear and it's fair to everyone:

  • Disclose who you are, every time. Affiliation stated up front, never buried.
  • Contribute knowledge, not recruitment. Genuine, sourced, useful. A pitch with a citation on it is still a pitch.
  • Stick around. Accounts that appear only when an operator collapses, post once, and vanish will be read for exactly what they are — and we'll say so.
  • Follow the rules already on the door: good faith, real detail, no pressure tactics, no farming a tragedy for traffic.

Operators who do this earn something no ad budget can buy: standing in the one room where prospective volunteers are actually deciding who to trust. For the orgs that show up and mean it, we'll gladly set up contributor flair and a resources wiki you can help build.

And to be straight with all of you: we're writing this partly because, right now, we can't tell most of you apart. A one-day-old account with a landing-page pitch looks identical whether it belongs to a genuinely excellent organisation or to the next collapse waiting to happen. The way you prove which one you are isn't the offer you posted three weeks ago. It's what you contribute now — when there's no stranded cohort to win.

The door's open. Come help build the thing that would have warned people about GVI.

Volunteer – local observership/shadowing opportunity

Hi everyone! I’m looking for an **observership or volunteer opportunity in Richmond or Vancouver**, preferably at a **medical/dental clinic, pharmacy, or healthcare setting**.

I’ve been applying for MOA/medical receptionist roles, but most require Canadian experience, so I’m hoping to gain some exposure through volunteering/observership.
I’m happy to help with **appropriate administrative tasks**, flexible with my availability, and willing to come in person and introduce myself.

Volunteer – abroad Venture with Impact still around?

Does anyone know if Venture with Impact is still around? I came across their website a couple years ago and became really interested in their mission - traveling somewhere and doing volunteer work and other forms of community service with locals. I wasn't able to go when I first found it, but had it bookmarked to revisit this year and I can't find their website, socials, or anything anymore.

Comment in this thread and I will reach out to you.

Volunteer – online Looking for online Arabic teaching volunteer opportunities

Hi! I'm looking to volunteer as an Arabic teacher with a nonprofit organization.

I'm specifically looking for something that is:

  • Fully online/remote
  • Teaching Arabic to non-native speakers
  • With a legitimate nonprofit, NGO, school, or educational organization
  • Ideally with an official volunteer profile/record and some form of proof of volunteering or certificate at the end

I'm not looking for paid work or private tutoring.

If you know of any organizations, programs, schools, or websites that offer this kind of opportunity, I'd really appreciate hearing about them. Thank you!

Volunteer – local Seeking Learning & Volunteering Opportunities in Rwanda as a Nurse

Hello Rwanda community,

I am a nurse with 2 years of experience working in a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) system. I’m very interested in coming to Rwanda to learn, grow, and contribute. I would love to find opportunities where I can volunteer, especially in healthcare or hospital settings, while also expanding my knowledge and skills.

If anyone here knows of programs, hospitals, NGOs, or community initiatives that welcome international volunteers in nursing or maternal/child health, I’d really appreciate your guidance or recommendations.

Thank you so much for your time and any advice you can share.

Recruiting – local Anyone interested in youth literacy/working with kids? (Low commitment volunteer opportunity!)

Hi everyone! I’m a sophomore at UW, and I’m looking for volunteers to help out with a local community project in the greater Seattle area.

I volunteer with Starspun Lit, a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to youth literacy and keeping creative imagination alive through storytelling. We are currently partnered with the YWCA in Lynnwood to run read-aloud sessions and creative workshops for the kids.

We need a few more volunteers to join us!

**What you’ll do:**

* Read books and lead fun, creative workshop activities for youth. No experience needed!
* (Optional) Help us build fun literacy curriculum or scale up to leadership roles.

**Time Commitment:**

* Very flexible! Just once or twice a month, generally biweekly. Sessions are 3:45-4:30pm on any day Monday-Thursday (you pick the day!)

If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to email me at [[office@starspunlit.org](mailto:office@starspunlit.org)](mailto:[office@starspunlit.org](mailto:office@starspunlit.org)) or reply to this post. You can also check out our site ([starspunlit.org](http://starspunlit.org)) and Instagram ([@starspun_lit](https://www.instagram.com/starspun_lit/)) for more information on who we are. Thanks!

Discussion / ethics / advice Pro bono consultants: is a strict "miss it, you lose it" meeting policy too harsh?

I've done pro bono nonprofit consulting for about ten years, sourced through a few different remote volunteer-matching platforms. Every engagement is scoped like a consulting project: three weeks, six Zoom meetings. I ask clients to schedule all six meetings within 48 hours of agreeing to work together so I can plan my life around them. If a client and I click, I'm happy to extend beyond that, but the standard offer is three weeks and done.

For years my no-show policy has been: miss a meeting with less than 24 hours' notice and you lose one of your six meetings. I'm considering simplifying that to just: miss a meeting, you lose it, no notice window at all.

Why. Think of it like an in-kind donation from a corporation, say 40 hours of free legal work, or the use of a conference room for three days. Once those hours or days are gone, they're gone. Nobody expects the law firm to add 40 more hours because the client didn't get organized in time, and nobody expects the room to reopen because a meeting got skipped. But some clients treat volunteer time as if it works differently, as an infinitely renewable resource instead of a fixed grant. And after ten years I've noticed a pattern that's hard to ignore: a striking number of hospitalizations, deaths in the family, and even a dog bite have landed, with suspicious precision, right on top of a scheduled meeting.

I know the reflex here is "nonprofit staff are stretched thin, go easy on them," and normally I would. But I don't want to be in the business of judging whether an excuse is real. A flat rule doesn't ask me to decide who's telling the truth, it just treats everyone's scheduled time the same way, no exceptions to litigate.

Curious how other pro bono volunteers or consultants handle this. Is dropping the notice window too rigid? Is there a better way to hold the line without becoming the villain of the engagement?

Recruiting – local Looking for Eye Surgeons to Volunteer in Fiji May 16-24, May 23-31

The Loloma Foundation’s mission is to provide sustainable medical, dental and infrastructure support to rural communities in the South Pacific who would otherwise have no access to basic healthcare.

It has been quite a journey. For twenty-four years Loloma Foundation volunteers have been bringing medical, dental and humanitarian aid to the less fortunate people of the island nations of the South Pacific. The numbers are staggering:

•$53M worth of medication, dental and medical supplies and equipment to Fiji     and the Solomon Islands

•Organized and implemented 84 medical/dental missions in 163 Fijian and Solomon Island villages

•121,510 patients have been treated by our volunteer physicians

•23,153 dental and prosthodontia patients have been seen and treated

•Over 1347 surgeries including Plastics, OB/GYN, Eye, General, Hand, ENT

We have planned to have four different surgery teams over 4 weeks at Savusavu Hospital in Fiji this May and June.

Cataract surgery is to be Sunday, May 17^(th) for screening, to Friday 22^(nd), perhaps follow up Saturday, May 23rd. Our ophthalmologist is now unable to join the team. We are searching for another ophthalmologist to fill their shoes.

We know this is short notice If you have interest, please contact us at [www.lolomafoundation.org\]([http://www.lolomafoundation.org](http://www.lolomafoundation.org))

Hello everyone,

I'm a 26-year-old volunteer from Tunisia, currently living in Tunisia, and I'm looking for an international volunteering opportunity in Europe related to beach cleanups, marine conservation, or environmental protection.

I'm very motivated to contribute to protecting the sea and coastal environment, and I'm willing to learn, work hard, and help wherever I can.

I would be very grateful if anyone knows of any organizations or programs that accept volunteers from Tunisia.

Thank you! 🌊🌍💙

Discussion / ethics / advice What is Aisec? And what do people even volunteer in there ?

I’ve been applying to several student clubs/ organisations at my university because I genuinely want extracurricular experience, volunteer experience, and things I can put into my portfolio. I’ve made it to interview stages and I don’t feel like my interviews went badly, but I’ve been rejected for four times from these student clubs.
What made me start questioning things is that some of these organizations seem to have a lot of overlap in membership and also recruitment processes. They started off with applying to AISEC in their first year and became a leadership position in various clubs or organisation. AIESEC, another club I applied to, and people involved in other organizations on campus all seem to be part of the same social circle.
I’m not saying they’re explicitly rejecting people because they aren’t friends with current members. I obviously can’t know that. Also one of my friends was in recruitment process and they were talking stuffs about me because i applied to this term as team member without telling them and i got into a fight with them the day before the results came out.
Has anyone else noticed this at their university? Is this just normal networking, or do student organizations sometimes become very insular?

Volunteer – abroad Looking for Volunteering opportunities from all around the world

Greetings everyone, I hope you're doing well, my name is Abdelkhaliq Benchaoui, I'm a 23 year old boy from Algeria!

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Management where I ranked second out of eighty eight students in the field, I have also received an Erasmus scholarship in Poland back in 2023 for my excellence, a Certified 5 star student.

I am Native in Arabic with an Advanced level (C1) in English and a basic French knowledge.

I have served as a volunteer coordinator with the Algerian red Crescent for 5 years (since 2021, as soon as I turned 18) and would love to volunteer this year, starting from this November, I am available for 6-12 months, I also have a small cat shelter in our yard and I personally take care of over 20 outdoor cats, I love animals & nature. So these two fields would be ideal for me.

Unfortunately I struggle with visas. I am open to volunteering in Ecuador (as it doesn't require a visa from us), or any other country providing that Visa sponsorship is available, I will happily pay for my round-trip Airplane ticket. But I'd require basic food and accomodation, nothing more.

Thank you so much for reading! Feel free to message me, I'd happily send my Cv and Qualifications & certificates (attested and available in both Arabic and English) for your review!

Discussion / ethics / advice Question for people who volunteer (or want to)

I've been doing some research into volunteering and I'm curious about something I've noticed.

It seems like there are a lot of people who want to volunteer, but finding something that actually fits their schedule can be difficult. A lot of opportunities seem to require a recurring commitment, applications, orientations, or signing up weeks in advance.

I'm wondering how other people experience this.

For example, if you suddenly had a free Saturday afternoon and thought "I'd like to spend a few hours doing something useful," would you actually be interested in finding a volunteer opportunity you could sign up for that day or within the next few days?

A few things I'm curious about:

  • How do you currently find volunteer opportunities?
  • Have you ever wanted to volunteer but decided not to because the process or commitment was too much?
  • Would you be interested in one-off 2–4 hour opportunities?
  • How much advance notice would you ideally want?
  • Would you be more likely to volunteer if you could search based on location, time available, and the type of cause you're interested in?
  • What would make you hesitant to sign up for something like that?

I'm asking because I'm researching an idea for a potential volunteer-matching platform, but I'm not trying to sell anything or promote an existing product. I'm trying to figure out whether this is actually a problem people experience before I take the idea any further.

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who want to volunteer but find it difficult to fit traditional volunteer commitments into their lives.

Be brutally honest, even if you think the idea sounds unnecessary or wouldn't change your volunteering habits. I'm much more interested in honest feedback than people telling me it's a good idea.

Recruiting – online / remote Employment Tribunal Mentor

Hi everyone,

I'm a Support Services Coordinator at Pregnant Then Screwed. If you haven't heard of us, we're a national charity supporting tens of thousands of women and parents every year and fighting to end the motherhood penalty. https://pregnantthenscrewed.com/

We've recently re-launched our Tribunal Mentor Programme and we're looking to recruit volunteers to help us grow the programme. If you have filed an Employment Tribunal Claim (even if you didn’t go all the way to the final hearing) and you would like to support other people going through that stressful process then this could be the perfect opportunity for you. Your claim doesn’t need to relate to maternity discrimination to be able to volunteer. Volunteer mentors share their lived experience, offer emotional support, a listening ear, and signposting usually over 12 weekly 1:2:1 calls.

You can find out more here https://pregnantthenscrewed.com/volunteer-as-a-tribunal-mentor/ and you can apply to be a volunteer here https://pregnantthenscrewed.beaconforms.com/form/9bdd0403. You’re also welcome to email me [gabi@pregnantthenscrewed.com](mailto:gabi@pregnantthenscrewed.com) if you have any questions.

Thanks so much,

Gabi

Volunteer – online Kids Help Phone volunteer question

I'm looking to volunteer with the crisis text line through Kids Help Phone (just working on getting references), but I haven't found the answer to this question any where. I tried emailing them, but never got a response.

I was wondering if I can take breaks between responding to texters? Some conversations might be a lot to handle and I want to be able to mentally prepare ahead of time (to the best of my ability) if I have to do at least 2 hours straight of responding to people.
