Help MAF Sensor Issues

I started having issues where my 92’ 240 was stalling after turning over unless I held the gas for 10-15 seconds. Even then it would rough idle until catching up or die anyway soon after on rare occasion.

I did some work on it (cleaned IAC valve, swapped sensor and air intake hose) but ended up taking it to the mechanic after it kept stalling. They swapped the sensor out with an aftermarket part, said the issue is fixed… but when I noted it’s still requiring me to keep the gas pedal down after turning over to keep it from stalling - they said that’s going to be normal for any aftermarket part especially if the engine is hot.

Does anyone know if this is accurate? Am I just doomed to press the gas each time when I turn over until I can get an actual Bosch MAF sensor?

Not accurate.

Your engine should start within three revolutions without you pressing the accelerator at all. The ECU takes care of everything.

You can try unplugging the battery for 15+ minutes to reset the ECU’s learning. That may help since critical parts have been swapped recently.

Usually the MAF fails in a way that the engine does not start at all. If your engine starts and runs with this MAF, leave it be for now.

I would make sure your fuel injectors and cold start injector (if equipped) are not leaking. That is the only reason I can imagine holding the accelerator would be helpful.

I appreciate the feedback. I’ll give the battery unplug a shot and look at the fuel injectors, although they didn’t mention anything about any leaks.

It’s not throwing a code or check engine light anymore, at least for now. So hoping it doesn’t get progressively worse if I don’t find anything else wrong myself.

This could also be a base timing issue.

The symptoms you describe would also apply to a timing belt being off by one or more teeth. Line up cylinder one to TDC and make sure the timing marks all align.

These cars are archaic, so they can run this way without setting a check engine light.

Your mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about.

Which MAF did you put in your car? The only good aftermarket one i found was the delphi brand on fcpeuro.

I got a Delphi from eBay but it was throwing MAF codes with it installed. Not sure which one they have on there gotta pop the hood and check.

I wouldn't trust anything from eBay.

Yeah didn’t work out for me so great, so learnt a lesson there.

Don't worry I did the same and bought a fake bosch maf from ebay and had the same results as you.

Id suggest you check your fuel regulator

If either the FPR or check valve at the pump are dead it would take a bit for the fuel system to build pressure.

I agree, I had a similar issue where if I pumped the gas it would push more fluid thru and start up as it should. I discovered a corroded fuel line that caused the engine to not receive fuel during initial start ups.

Pumping the gas doesn't squirt fuel into the intake as LH 2.2 or 2.4 fuel injection lacks an acceleration enrichment feature. The fuel pumps will prime for a second or two when the key is turned on, but then not run unless the fuel pump relay sees an ignition signal (spark plugs firing).

Lol. They don't know their ass from a hat. I bet you need a new ECT sensor, and your maf is fine. Easy to swap in a parking lot. Be sure it's a genuine Bosch and not the blue one labeled porsche/volvo

Thanks. I’ll take a multimeter to it and see, Bosch part is only 20 bucks or so so wouldn’t be costly to replace.

That isn't normal behavior for properly operating LH 2.4. Holding your foot down on a hot start should only be an expected procedure for carbureted vehicles, not fuel injection.

How about your ECU?

Not sure yet. I’ll take a look at the ECT like someone suggested and I guess move on up to the ECU.
